Paul Jaboulet Aine Hermitage La Chapelle 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 96838

RP98+98–100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th May 2021
Might this be the next vintage of La Chapelle to crack triple digits? Knockout aromas of crushed stone, violets, blueberries, and cassis mark the nose of the 2019 Hermitage La Chapelle, while the full-bodied palate is undeniably more intense and powerful than the more elegant 2018. Rich and velvety, it coats the mouth with dark fruit and creamy-textured espresso, yet retains remarkable length and licorice-derived peppery freshness on the finish. Wow!
JD96+96–98+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/19/2020
Compared to the La Maison Bleue, the 2019 Hermitage La Chapelle is more closed, tight, and primary, with a focused, full-bodied style that carries impressive black and blue fruits, graphite, bloody meat, and ample minerality. Structured and tannic, yet wonderfully concentrated and pure, it’s not for those seeking instant gratification, but it’s another stunning Hermitage in the making. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A big, rich wine with intense fruit, showing blackberry, black olive and black truffle character. Full-bodied and layered with chewy tannins that are soft and juicy. It’s a little warm on the finish. Yet, the decadence is so attractive and the phenolics keep it in line. This is very solid. Try after 2024.
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2022
A modern-styled, powerful red that seduces with rich blackberry ganache, heady cassis and vanilla paste flavors underscored by tobacco and charred cedar. A bitter orange peel note and firm graphite edge add brightness to the finish, which is framed in silky yet firm tannins. Drink now through 2030. 1,000 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Where It's From

Region / Rhone

View more wines from Rhone

Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.

The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.

Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Lastly, both reds I was able to taste from bottle showed brilliantly. The slightly larger production 2019 Saint Joseph has a Côte Rôtie-like perfume of black raspberries, blackberries, flowers, new leather, and pepper, and it has good acidity, medium to full body, and a great finish. Drink it over the coming 10–12 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP92+92+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 20th Jan 2022
A bit darker in hue and fruit than the fun, charming 2018, Perret’s 2019 Saint Joseph verges on being too serious, with a dusty touch of tannin on the finish. Smoky and spicy up front, with notes of black cherries and cassis, it’s full-bodied, rich and velvety, easily capable of aging a few years and drinking well through 2030 or so.
VN91+91–93 pts. - Vinous - May 2020
Deep-pitched black/blue fruit aromas are energized by cracked pepper and smoky mineral notes. Densely packed bitter cherry, cassis, licorice and candied violet flavors reveal a hint of olive on the back half. Chewy tannins add grip to a long, smoky finish that leaves a dark chocolate note behind.

Reveals rich dark cherry and plum fruit with a lightly mulled edge, while anise, tar and black olive accents fill in throughout. Shows a mouthwatering savory edge on the finish. Approachable for the fruit, but a decade in the cellar won’t hurt. Best from 2023 through 2032. 1,315 cases made, 150 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2022
Leading off the 2019s from bottle and first given the name Les Chailles in 2003, the base 2019 Cornas Les Chailles comes from multiple terroirs (Combe, Les Saveaux, Cayret, Les Mazards, Chaillot, and Chapuzes) and was destemmed and aged 18 months in used barrels. This inky hued effort offers textbook Voge aromas and flavors of red and blue fruits, violets, iron, and peppered game. Medium to full-bodied, textured, and nicely structured, it can be enjoyed today but will benefit from just a handful of years in the cellar and have 15 to 20 years of overall longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Moving to the two Saint Joseph reds, the 2019 Saint Joseph La Croix De Chabot offers a rich, medium-bodied, mineral-laced style that carries loads of red and blue fruits, scorched earth, and bouquet garni-like aromas and flavors. Beautifully done, I suspect it will benefit from short-term cellaring as it has ample tannins. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Whispers of eucalyptus and charred clove lend spice to black-currant and cherry flavors in this 100% Syrah sourced from vines averaging 45 years in age. Matured 15 months in a combination of new and used oak, it’s full bodied and deeply concentrated but maintains freshness and vitality. Delicious now the wine should hold well through 2029.
JD90+90–92 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/19/2020
The base 2019 Crozes-Hermitage looks to be outstanding, with a beautiful purple color, classic Northern Rhône notes of darker fruits, pepper, and gamey tapenade, medium to full body, and a balanced, pure, seamless texture. It should be a smoking value and delivers the goods. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th May 2021
Dark in color for a “basic” Crozes, the 2019 Crozes Hermitage shows impressive concentration and ripeness, seamlessly marrying black olives and licorice into a rich, full-bodied example of the appellation. Round and velvety, it may lack a bit of nuance, but it’s a satisfying mouthful of Syrah for drinking over the next several years.

The 2019 Côte Rôtie Vieilles Vignes offers slightly more dark fruit and minerality as well as a more concentrated yet backward style on the palate. Even richer, darker and more powerful than the 2018 version, the 2019 Hermitage La Maison Bleue offers up some lifted, minty notes to accent its potent cassis fruit. Dark, dense, and Port-like without being overly heavy or dense, this full-bodied effort is long, intense and concentrated, with softly dusty tannins on the finish.
JD94+94–96 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/19/2020
Beautiful cassis, truffle, damp earth, and ground pepper emerge from the 2019 Hermitage La Maison Bleue. Coming from the eastern portion of Hermitage Hill, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a rounded, opulent texture, building tannins, and a great finish. It’s certainly in the same league (and style) as the 2018, and while it’s going to drink nicely at a young age, my money is on it evolving gracefully for 20–25 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Shimmering ruby. Lively, spice-accented cherry and black raspberry aromas, along with subtle smoked meat and floral accents. From the southern part of the appellation and brought up all in used oak, the 2019 Saint Joseph is another ripe, sunny, textured beauty. Fresh aromas of concentrated red fruit framed by licorice and blackberries, followed by a brambly layer fill the glass. The 2,000-case 2018 Hermitage Maison Bleue comes from the eastern side of the appellation and is a much more fleshy, opulent wine compared to the more mineral-laced La Chapelle. Jammy blackberry and cassis fruit, notes of ground herbs, graphite, and violets, full-bodied richness, beautiful concentration, and a great finish all make for a compelling Hermitage. It’s going to benefit from 4–5 years of bottle age. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Inky violet color. Deeply pitched cherry, blueberry, licorice and candied violet aromas are complemented by hints of baking spices, incense and smoky minerals. Succulent and penetrating on the palate, offering deeply concentrated black/blue fruit, spice and floral pastille flavors that become more energetic as the wine slowly stretches out. Weighty and broad yet lively as well, finishing with sharp delineation, mounting tannins and outstanding, floral- and mineral-driven persistence.
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, August 3, 2020
A red with impressive depth and richness, yet it’s always in focus and balanced with very polished, fine tannins that tie up the berry, smoke and chocolate flavors, not to mention tar. It’s full-bodied, yet creamy and round-textured. Drink in 2022 and onwards.

Opaque ruby. An assertively scented, complex bouquet features mineral-accented boysenberry, cherry liqueur, licorice and smoky mineral aromas that expand with air. Stains the palate with sweet, dense black and blue fruit, spicecake and candied violet flavors that show a surprisingly graceful touch thanks to a spine of juicy acidity. Velvety, slow-mounting tannins shape a broad, smoke-laced finish that hangs on with superb, floral-driven persistence.

Brooding, concentrated and tannic, the 2015 Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Roure will need some time to come out of its granite shell. Crushed stone and dark cherries and cassis emerge only reticently on the nose. For easier near-term drinking, grab some of the Thalabert; for serious longevity in the cellar, the Domaine de Roure will be hard to beat.

The most famous wine of the estate, the 2005 Hermitage La Chapelle, looks outstanding. Apparently the new owners eliminated nearly 50% of the production to come up with this cuvee, which looks set to have at least 30 years of longevity. It was aged in all small French barrels, of which about 15–20% are new, so the actual winemaking and elevage haven’t changed as of yet, although the famed Bordeaux winemaking guru, Professor Denis Dubourdieu, has been hired, and his expertise tends to be more with white rather than red wines, so we’ll see what his talents provide in future vintages. This wine is outstanding, dark ruby/purple-colored with notes of creme de cassis, tobacco leaf, and some melted licorice and gamey animal notes. It is medium to full-bodied, has high tannin, moderate acidity, and admirable purity and depth. Anticipated maturity: 2013–2027.
