When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

The 2022 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard ratchets up the intensity and has a saturated purple hue as well as a killer nose of ripe black and blue fruits, graphite, ground pepper, and crushed stone-like minerality. Rich, concentrated, and powerful, it shines for its purity, has building tannins, and a great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2022 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard has an alluring nose of red, blue and black berries with accents of grilled game meats, forest floor and peppermint patty. The full-bodied palate is savory and deep, with chalky tannins, juicy acidity and a long finish laced with youthful cinnamon tones. It will have more to show after 3–5 years in bottle. (Erin Brooks)

The 2022 Syrah Sonoma Hillsides is a blend of several sites. Aging in cement helps retain a good bit of freshness, and that gives this wine quite a different feel from the other Syrahs, all of which are aged in neutral oak. The 2022 doesn’t have the immediacy or flashiness of the very best years, or of the other Syrahs in the range, but readers who can wait will find a wine of magnificent pedigree. (Antonio Galloni)

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2023
The 2022 Syrah Santa Barbara County is scented of cassis, blueberries, warm chocolate, forest floor, lavender and iron. The full-bodied palate features powerful, floral fruit supported by soft, approachable tannins and bursts of mouthwatering acidity, and it has a long, fragrant finish. It’s dangerously easy to drink without sacrificing nuance or complexity. 3,000 cases were produced. (Erin Brooks)
JD92+92–94 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/30/2023
A year-in, year-out smoking wine, the 2022 Syrah Santa Barbara County reveals a deep ruby hue as well as a ripe, decadent, full-bodied style in its pure black and blue fruits, peppery herbs, and violet-driven aromas and flavors. Textured and beautifully balanced, with a great finish, it’s going to shine right out of the gate. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Plump and supple, with generous raspberry and huckleberry flavors that reveal details of mocha and savory spices, finishing with refined tannins. Drink now through 2032. 2,100 cases made. (Tim Fish)
VN8989 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2023
The 2022 Syrah (Santa Barbara County) is a powerhouse. Inky dark fruit, new leather, licorice, dried herbs, chocolate and leather are all dialed up in this huge, opulent Syrah. There’s not much subtlety here, that is for sure. I would give this a year or two to shed some baby fat. (Antonio Galloni)

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2023
The 2022 La Cuadrilla is a blend of Syrah and Grenache with a smaller portion of Mourvèdre. It offers slowly unfurling scents of wild berries, tar, turned earth and wildflowers. The medium-bodied palate is bright and silky, with spicy, earthy fruit and a long, perfumed finish. 10,500 cases were made, and profits go to the vineyard workers at Stolpman. (Erin Brooks)
JD8989 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/30/2023
Based on 60% Syrah, 30% Grenache, and the rest equal parts Mourvèdre and Sangiovese, the 2022 La Cuadrilla Red Wine has quality strawberry and crunchy cherry fruits as well as lots of peppery herbs and floral nuances. Medium-bodied, juicy, and easygoing, with integrated, bright acidity and a great finish, it’s a delicious red to enjoy over the coming 5–6 years. This is California’s answer to a terrific Côtes du Rhône! (Jeb Dunnuck)

This relatively recent proprietary red-blend creation continues to impress each vintage, showcasing Paso power with deft balance in pleasing ways. Aromas of blackberry jam, violet extract and root-beer floats proceed from the nose into a comforting palate of strawberry, cola and peppery spices. Firm, lingering tannins lead through the caramel-laced finish. (Matt Kettmann)

Almost opaque in the glass, this luxury bottling entices with intense aromas of black currant and blackberry sauce on the nose, with savory hints of dark olive and caramel spice. It’s quite dry on the palate, where licorice, violet and cassis flavors linger amidst the polished tannins.
JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 9/1/2020
The most expensive release is the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Signature, which is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, and 2% Saint Macaire aged 19 months in 100% new French oak. Its saturated purple hue is followed by powerful notes of blackcurrants, scorched earth, chocolate, white truffle, and chalky minerality, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a concentrated, stacked mid-palate, building tannins, and a great finish. It’s a beautiful wine. I’d give bottles 2–3 years to shed a touch of baby fat and develop more nuances, and it should keep for over a decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A dense color in the glass, this bottling offers toasty oak, roasted red fruit and charred beef aromas on the nose. There’s a fine tannic line to the palate, where boysenberry, pepper and toasted oak flavors align. (Matt Kettmann)
