Cayuse Vineyards Cailloux Vineyard Syrah 2017 / 750 ml.

Item#: 99619

JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, June 1, 2020
Lots of blackberry, tar and blueberry aromas with hints of dried earth. Full bodied, tight and focused with intensity and savoriness in the center palate. Plush and attractive at the end, but not overpowering. Drink or hold.

The only Syrah that includes some Viognier, the 2017 Syrah Cailloux Vineyard (this is the same site used for the Viognier) is always a great representation of the vintage as well as the wines of Christophe Baron. Ruby/purple-hued, with a rocking bouquet of black raspberries, smoked game, black pepper, and spring flowers, it has plenty of classic Rocks funkiness and meaty notes, medium to full body, a core of sweet fruit, and a great, great finish. It ranks with the top two to three wines in this vintage. It opens up nicely with time in the glass and shows well today, and it’s certainly going to cruise for 15+ years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th Aug 2020
The 2017 Syrah Cailloux Vineyard begins generous and inky in the glass, with black fruit at its core and floral aromas of violets and lavender followed by a soft smokiness with layers of olive tapenade and dust-covered black raspberry. Full-bodied, the Cailloux Syrah is intensely complex and reveals layers of crunchy minerality and silky tannins that frame the elegant notions of cherry blossom in the mouth. Ending with a long-lingering and sophisticated finish, the wine continues to reveal its subtleties, expressing umami and savory characteristics. Proving to be yet another stellar bottling from the Cayuse team, the wine dares me to keep my hands off the glass. I can’t… 859 cases produced. (Anthony Mueller)
VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020
Bright red-ruby. Highly complex, soil-driven aromas of raspberry, red licorice, smoked meat, pepper and rose petal. Intense, savory and concentrated; quite penetrating and youthful in the way of the 2016 bottling, showing little in the way of easy sweetness in spite of its terrific flavor intensity and depth. Not a thick wine but remarkably juicy. A very structured version of this bottling, in need of time to harmonize, soften and expand. As much saline as sweet, showing a briney olive tapenade note. This Syrah will rely more on its firm tannic spine than on its acidity for energy. Finishes very long and authoritative, if a bit uncompromising today. Incidentally, Cayuse did not bottle a Viognier in 2018 as Christophe Baron and Elizabeth Bourcier decided that the fruit was not up to their usual standards. (Stephen Tanzer)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2020
Structured and impeccably layered, with rich and expressive blueberry and raspberry flavors, laced with licorice, bacon fat and crushed stone notes that pick up speed toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2030. 859 cases made. (Tim Fish)
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2020
Coming from the estate’s first vineyard planted in 1997, the aromas are reserved, with notes of soot, raspberry, dried herb, smoked meat, asparagus and plum. The palate brings a sense of elegance, purity and freshness that is captivating. A lingering finish caps it off. It’s a pretty, understated offering from this site. (Sean P. Sullivan)

JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 4/15/2020
The 2017 Syrah Lagniappe comes all from the Red Willow Vineyard and was 10% destemmed and brought up in 10% new French oak. Deeper ruby/purple, with blackberry fruits interwoven with lots of ground pepper, gravelly earth, and iron-laced aromatics, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, ripe yet certainly present tannins, and a great finish. The balance here is spot on and it’s a classic, age-worthy Syrah from this estate. Give bottles 3–5 years and it’s going to evolve for over a decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN93+93+ pts. - Vinous - Dec 2019
Bright medium ruby; dark for a wine from this producer. Savory Old World perfume of crushed blackberry, licorice, peppery herbs and black olive. Densely packed, savory and fine-grained, with an impression of peppery vinosity lifting the middle palate. Superb intensity and flavor definition here, along with a subtle sweetness. The firm, rising back end shows strong black fruit and black olive flavors lifted by a soil-driven peppery element. This bottling stood out in 2016 for its intensity and light touch, and this 2017 is a worthy successor, finishing with resounding palate-staining length and grip. Ultimately, I’d have a hard time identifying this Syrah as a Washington wine owing to its sharp definition and light touch. (Stephen Tanzer)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 22nd Oct 2020
The 2017 Syrah Lagniappe opens to a nose of dark fruit and undertones of spice along with a dusty mineral essence. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is shy on the palate, offering a spicy character that grows in amplitude and persistence as time goes on. The wine lingers with a spicy finish that leaves me wanting just a bit more fruit profile to push the score higher.
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2020
Coming from this esteemed site in Yakima Valley, aromas of stem, moist earth, smoked meat and black pepper are followed by tart, lip-smacking flavors that ramp up in intensity with time open. Grainy tannins back it up. It needs time to show its best. Drink after 2025. Pair it with grilled meat.
WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 02/21
Gramercy’s Red Willow bottling is tense and savory, a remarkably cool expression of Columbia Valley fruit. It leads with scents of olive and pine tips, a bit of black plum and mocha which, with air, becomes more biting, like espresso. The flavors are savory, the fruit remaining in the background for now, with a firm texture that calls for something rich to offset, like pork roast.

The aromas explode from the glass, with notes of fire pit, potpourri, black olive, wet stone, dried porcini and stone. The palate is sumptuous, layered, elegant and intensely flavorful, showing abundant savory notes. A lingering black olive and earthy finish caps it off. Best after 2025.
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th Aug 2020
Showing with a deep ruby core that fades to a purple edge, the 2017 Syrah High Contrast Vineyard explodes from the glass with pronounced smoky aromas that waft with delicate notes of dark chocolate-covered blackberries, then show hints of roasted coffee bean, notions of petrichor, baked earth and dried herbs. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is elegantly powerful, showcasing a balanced chassis of youthful tannins that evolve with the complex nature of the wine. There is a velvety firmness to the mid-palate before moving onto an elongated finish that grows in complexity and amplitude as the expression resonates harmoniously, confirming yet another blockbuster Syrah from the ever-so-talented Christophe Baron. Only 386 cases made.
JD95+95+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - April 15, 2020
The 2017 Syrah High Contrast Vineyard is more wound up and tight, with backward notes of chocolaty black fruits, toasted spice, mulled plums, cured ham, and sweet mulch all developing with time in the glass. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, with plenty of tannins, this is one 2017 that’s going to reward bottle age. Do your best to hide bottles for 4–5 years if possible, and it should see its 20th birthday in fine form. This is certainly for those who like a big dose of funk in their Syrah! (Jeb Dunnuck)

JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/9/2022
The 2019 Grenache God Only Knows is another gorgeous example of this wine that has a style all its own. Revealing a translucent ruby hue as well as a kaleidoscope-like bouquet of ripe cherries, blackberries, forest floor, spring flowers, and charcoal, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, a silky, seamless mouthfeel, perfect balance, and a great finish. This exotic, perfumed Grenache is a hypothetical mix of a Grand Cru from the Côte de Nuits and a 100% Grenache Châteauneuf from sandy soils. It should cruise in the cellar for 10–15 years.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2023
The 2019 Red Wine God Only Knows is composed primarily from Grenache and is refined for 21 months in neutral French demi-muids and foudre. There’s an almost-herbal-tea-like quality to the nose, distinctly savory yet spicy, with dusty floral tones and hints of olive offset by a spritz of citrus. This washes across the palate with ease, supple yet pure in style, with a balanced inner sweetness contrasted by a salty flourish and juicy acidity that maintains lovely energy. Saline- minerals come forward through the finale, combined with black currants and white pepper, as a light tannic tug on the senses frames this red beautifully. (Eric Guido)
RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2022
Bursting with aromas of potpourri with a dusty, red-fruited essence of wild strawberries, savory herbs and red and black spice, the 2019 Grenache God Only Knows Armada Vineyard is an instant success. Medium-bodied, the palate is fresh with a fine mineral tension that gives way to a firm tannic edge before gliding to a seductive, red cherry skin essence over the lingering, spicy finish. Only 223 cases were produced. I’m always a sucker for this bottling. (Anthony Mueller)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2023
A vivacious red driven by a vibrant core of acidity and stony minerality, with multilayered cherry, cranberry and bacon fat accents that zip toward fresh, snappy tannins. Grenache. Drink now through 2032. 547 cases made. (Tim Fish)
WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2022
Grenache dominates this wine. The rest? God only knows. Subdued aromas of red fruit, potpourri, pepper and dried herb lead to lighter styled floral flavors. It lingers on the finish. It’s a more fruit forward offering than most vintages. (Sean P. Sullivan)
