The old vine cuvée, the 2019 Saint Joseph Les Grisières sees a slightly longer élevage in barrel. It’s up with the finest wines I’ve tasted from Perret and has classic Saint Joseph earthy, mineral-laced dark fruits as well as ground pepper, leather, and some meatiness. Medium to full-bodied and perfectly balanced, with gorgeous tannins, it too is ideal for drinking over the coming 10–12 years and will certainly evolve for longer. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Even more concentrated than the 2018 version, Perret’s 2019 Saint Joseph les Grisieres boasts smoky, spicy aromas set against a backdrop of black cherries and black olives to create a complex, savory whole. Full-bodied and plush in feel, with a long, velvety finish and ample richness, it’s nearly approachable now and should still be going strong in 2030.
Ripe, intensely perfumed dark fruit, licorice, olive paste and cracked pepper aromas, along with an exotic pit fruit note that emerges slowly. Sappy and energetic on the palate, offering alluringly sweet red and blue fruit, candied violet and spicecake flavors braced by an undercurrent of smoky minerality. Closes extremely long and precise, with repeating floral and mineral qualities and talc-y, slowly mounting tannins. This is shaping up to be a really outstanding wine and one that I’d love to see poured alongside some upper-tier Côte-Rôties.

Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.
The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.
Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).

This throws off a robust and zesty mix of loganberry, açaí and red and black cherry compote flavors, mixed with mouthwatering olive, sweet bay leaf and savory notes. The slightly larger production 2019 Saint Joseph has a Côte Rôtie-like perfume of black raspberries, blackberries, flowers, new leather, and pepper, and it has good acidity, medium to full body, and a great finish. A bit darker in hue and fruit than the fun, charming 2018, Perret’s 2019 Saint Joseph verges on being too serious, with a dusty touch of tannin on the finish. Smoky and spicy up front, with notes of black cherries and cassis, it’s full-bodied, rich and velvety, easily capable of aging a few years and drinking well through 2030 or so.
Deep-pitched black/blue fruit aromas are energized by cracked pepper and smoky mineral notes. Densely packed bitter cherry, cassis, licorice and candied violet flavors reveal a hint of olive on the back half. Chewy tannins add grip to a long, smoky finish that leaves a dark chocolate note behind.

Leading off the 2019s from bottle and first given the name Les Chailles in 2003, the base 2019 Cornas Les Chailles comes from multiple terroirs (Combe, Les Saveaux, Cayret, Les Mazards, Chaillot, and Chapuzes) and was destemmed and aged 18 months in used barrels. This inky hued effort offers textbook Voge aromas and flavors of red and blue fruits, violets, iron, and peppered game. Medium to full-bodied, textured, and nicely structured, it can be enjoyed today but will benefit from just a handful of years in the cellar and have 15 to 20 years of overall longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Might this be the next vintage of La Chapelle to crack triple digits? Knockout aromas of crushed stone, violets, blueberries, and cassis mark the nose of the 2019 Hermitage La Chapelle, while the full-bodied palate is undeniably more intense and powerful than the more elegant 2018. Rich and velvety, it coats the mouth with dark fruit and creamy-textured espresso, yet retains remarkable length and licorice-derived peppery freshness on the finish. Wow!
Compared to the La Maison Bleue, the 2019 Hermitage La Chapelle is more closed, tight, and primary, with a focused, full-bodied style that carries impressive black and blue fruits, graphite, bloody meat, and ample minerality. Structured and tannic, yet wonderfully concentrated and pure, it’s not for those seeking instant gratification, but it’s another stunning Hermitage in the making. (Jeb Dunnuck)
A big, rich wine with intense fruit, showing blackberry, black olive and black truffle character. Full-bodied and layered with chewy tannins that are soft and juicy. It’s a little warm on the finish. Yet, the decadence is so attractive and the phenolics keep it in line. This is very solid. Try after 2024.
A modern-styled, powerful red that seduces with rich blackberry ganache, heady cassis and vanilla paste flavors underscored by tobacco and charred cedar. Moving to the two Saint Joseph reds, the 2019 Saint Joseph La Croix De Chabot offers a rich, medium-bodied, mineral-laced style that carries loads of red and blue fruits, scorched earth, and bouquet garni-like aromas and flavors. An assertively perfumed bouquet displays an array of ripe red and blue fruit preserve, floral and spice qualities, along with suggestions of licorice, smoky bacon fat and mineral notes. Effortlessly marries depth and energy and offers sweet cherry, crème de mûre and candied violet flavors sharpened by building mineral and spice flourishes. Shows noteworthy clarity and mineral cut on a long, penetrating finish that echoes the floral and mineral notes with real authority.
This is really packed tight, with a rock-solid core of red and black currant, plum and bitter cherry compote notes, bristling with a singed iron spine and additional pepper and lilac notes along the edges. Coming from a cooler, granite terroir just above Tournon, the 2019 Saint Joseph Vignes De L’Hospice is a serious, age-worthy beauty, and I always find a certain Hermitage-like character in wines from this vineyard. Full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful, it has masses of tannins as well as remarkable purity, and ample fruit and concentration. The aromatics lean toward the blue end of the spectrum, but it’s a mineral-laced, peppery, beautiful Saint Joseph in the making. A solid 4–6 years, if not more, of bottle age are recommended. Perennially among the best bottlings from the appellation, the 2019 Saint-Joseph Vignes de l’Hospice looks set to rival the tremendous effort bottled in 2015. Enticing scents of crushed stone, pencil shavings and cassis appear on the nose (it ages in 100% new oak), and while this full-bodied wine packs plenty of power, it also shows characteristic granite-derived restraint, delivering a tense balance between ripeness and structure. It should be a beauty, but give it time, as the tannins are prominent at this early stage of its evolution.
