Item#: 96157
The 2019 Al Passo is rich, ample and generous. Healthy dollops of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon turbocharge Sangiovese, adding depth and structure. Red-fleshed Sangiovese fruit emerges over time. The 2019 is deep and quite fleshy, but it also has a good deal of brightness to balance some of its more overt leanings. (Antonio Galloni)
An expressive, fruity style, this red features cherry, raspberry, plum, floral and wild herb aromas and flavors. Dense and lively, with a lingering aftertaste of red fruit and herbs. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2023 through 2036. 10,000 cases made, 7,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Where It's From
Region / Tuscany
There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.
Country / Italy
Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.
Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

The 2019 Chianti Colli Fiorentini is a bold, juicy wine. Succulent red cherry, plum, spice and tobacco race across the palate as this fleshy, inky Chianti shows off its considerable charms. The 2019 is not super complex, but it is immediate, bold and undeniably delicious. (Antonio Galloni)
Aromas of ripe dark-skinned berries, new leather and underbrush lift out of the glass. On the easygoing, enjoyable palate, lithe tannins and fresh acidity accompany dried cherry, white pepper and a hint of star anise. (Kerin O’Keefe)

The San Felice 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Grigio (made with 80% Sangiovese and 20% complementary indigenous grapes) stands out due to its velvety richness and expressive flavor profile. The wine delivers measured intensity with bright purple and black fruits, a good sense of energy and drive, and some lingering spiciness on the close. It is rich but not heavy. Production is 30,000 bottles. (Monica Larner)
This is spiced and racy with dark cherries, currants, savory herbs, walnuts and sandalwood. Medium- to full-bodied with ripe, powdery tannins, juicy acidity and a mineral backbone on the palate. Bright and fruit-forward in the finish. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
A sleek red, with solid grip wrapped around dark flavors of black cherry, blueberry and earth. Vibrant, with a slight burr to the chalky tannins on the iron-infused finish. Sangiovese, Pugnitello, Malvasia Nera, Ciliegiolo, Mazzese and Abrusco. Best from 2025 through 2042. 2,500 cases made, 460 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
The nose opens with savory notes of tar, topsoil and balsamic vinegar before a bracingly fresh burst of wild fennel and mint. Fresh, crisp red fruit on the palate has a chocolaty undertone with more tar and crushed rock for a mineral edge, emphasized by tightly coiled tannins. (Danielle Callegari)

The 2019 Chianti Rufina Riserva Vigneto Bucherchiale is incredible and refined, with floral layers of brilliant red raspberry, forested earth, and potpourri. This continues seamlessly to the palate with complexity and weightlessness, fine tannins, and a long finish. Notes of leather, cedar, and red cherry meld together in a medium frame. This beautiful wine is a stunner now but will also be a joy to revisit over the next 15 or more years. (Audrey Frick)
This has aromas of wild raspberries, plums, almond blossom, sandalwood, clay and green olives on the nose. Medium-bodied with fine, creamy tannins. Supple and transparent. Very fine. Even better from 2024. (James Suckling)

Styled after the great wines of Bordeaux, the 2009 Picconero represents a blend of Merlot (65%), Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot from the estate’s Tenuta Montebello. The wine opens with an inky dark appearance and follows to the nose with dark fruit, blackberry preserves, prune, tobacco and leather. Again, like the other wines of this estate, what really stands out is how elegantly these wines perform in the mouth. Picconero is tight and structured, but never heavy or sticky. Lingering tones of cigar box and Indian spice add complexity to the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014–2025.

The 2015 Picconero Tenuta Montebello is a blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc that pours out lots of dark fruit and plum. This is a very nice, juicy and balanced wine with good thickness, a great match for iron steak and blue cheese butter sauce. In general, I’ve found these wines from Tolini to be top notch, with succulent tones of ripe fruit and pretty intensity. This one is at the top of the pyramid, and I’m guessing 2016 in particular could be even better. They released about 9,000 bottles of this vintage.
Aromas of violets, lavender and blackberries follow through to a full body with firm and chewy tannins. A lot of wood showing now, but will come together with age. Try after 2021.
Packed with sweet, ripe blackberry and blueberry fruit, this red is lush and polished, accented by rosemary, thyme, graphite and oak spice notes. Dusty tannins line the finish. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2021 through 2033. 800 cases made, 150 cases imported.
The 2015 Picconero, 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, is powerful and super-concentrated in feel. Dark fruit, chocolate, mocha, leather, licorice and smoke flavors abound. I admire the wine’s depth and overall persistence, even if the tannins are likely to always be equally prominent. This is a decidedly heavily-extracted style. It is possible the formidable tannins will soften in time.

Well-defined black cherry and blackberry flavors are shaded by notes of rosemary, eucalyptus, iron and tobacco in this firm and complex red, which shows lovely balance and grip on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2036. 10,000 cases made, 8,000 cases imported.
The 2018 Legit is a bold, punchy wine that marries varietal aromas and flavors with Castelnuovo Berardenga richness. It’s a combination that works quite well. Blue/black fruit, gravel, spice, dried herbs, lavender and chocolate are front and center in this juicy, open-knit Cabernet Sauvignon. (Antonio Galloni)
