The Chianti region in central Tuscany produces the internationally-famous red wine of the same name. With a long history, the wines of Chianti have evolved through the years. At one point, Chianti was typically a blend of Sangiovese (the primary red grape used in the region) and several other grapes, including white grapes like Trebbiano and Malvasia. As wine trends and palettes have changed, most growers have eliminated the white grapes from their Chianti since they often caused the wines to be too light. Likewise, Chianti used to be recognized for it's distinct, squatty, straw-covered bottles, but producers have moved away from that since those bottles grew to be recognized as emblematic of a lesser quality wine.

All that aside, there are many world-class wines produced in Chianti, especially in the Chianti Classico zone located in the center of the region. Here you'll find medium-bodied, dry reds with firm tannins and high acidity. These wines are tremendous for pairing with Italian foods of all sorts.

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

A certified organic wine, the 2019 Chianti Classico is punchy and bright with true aromas of wild cherry, cassis and raspberry. Made with all Sangiovese, the wine proceeds with a light, easy-drinking style that makes it ideal for a weeknight pizza dinner. It wraps up with a lean-bodied style and fresh acidity to match the creamy cheese in your favorite foods. This has lots of lift and energy. 50,000 bottles were released. (Monica Larner)

Lifted floral notes of lilacs and rose hips, followed by a mix of red fruit and spices. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Balanced overall. Needs some more time to soften and a touch more fruit. Drink after 2027. (James Suckling)

The San Felice 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Grigio (made with 80% Sangiovese and 20% complementary indigenous grapes) stands out due to its velvety richness and expressive flavor profile. The wine delivers measured intensity with bright purple and black fruits, a good sense of energy and drive, and some lingering spiciness on the close. It is rich but not heavy. Production is 30,000 bottles. (Monica Larner)
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, August 7, 2023
This is spiced and racy with dark cherries, currants, savory herbs, walnuts and sandalwood. Medium- to full-bodied with ripe, powdery tannins, juicy acidity and a mineral backbone on the palate. Bright and fruit-forward in the finish. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2023
A sleek red, with solid grip wrapped around dark flavors of black cherry, blueberry and earth. Vibrant, with a slight burr to the chalky tannins on the iron-infused finish. Sangiovese, Pugnitello, Malvasia Nera, Ciliegiolo, Mazzese and Abrusco. Best from 2025 through 2042. 2,500 cases made, 460 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2023
The nose opens with savory notes of tar, topsoil and balsamic vinegar before a bracingly fresh burst of wild fennel and mint. Fresh, crisp red fruit on the palate has a chocolaty undertone with more tar and crushed rock for a mineral edge, emphasized by tightly coiled tannins. (Danielle Callegari)

The 2019 Trittico, a blend of Sargiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, is a fresh, fruity wine to drink now and over the next few years. Trittico is not super-complex, but it is inviting and tasty. (Antonio Galloni)

A super-clean, fruity red with juicy blackcurrant and dark cherry character. Medium-bodied with very fine, fruit-coated tannins and a fresh finish. 85% sangiovese, 10% cabernet sauvignon and 5% merlot. Screw cap. Delicious now. (James Suckling)
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 7/1/2023
Vanilla and toasted coconut open the nose of this wine, before being joined by bright strawberry-cherry and stony underbrush. Strawberries and wild green watermelon notes perk up the palate, with more vanilla and also milk chocolate. Tannins are beginning to uncoil but acid remains present and accounted for. JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/28/2024
The 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino pours a magenta/ruby color and is highly expressive with aromas of mixed berries, herbes de Provence, sweet tobacco, and candied violets. This full-bodied Brunello is flush with sweet tannins, a richly textured mid-palate, and an impressive finish. It retains very nice purity and has the potential to age over the next 15–20 years. (Audrey Frick)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2024
This tightly packed version is resonant and persistent, with fine integration of all its components, despite being compact and austere today, revealing cherry, raspberry, rose, earth and mineral flavors. Give this the benefit of the doubt. Best from 2026 through 2042. 20,000 cases made, 3,500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Dec 2023
The certified organic Col d’Orcia 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows ripe fruit, blackberry, earthy notes, licorice and, generally speaking, a much bigger and riper fruit profile compared to its peers. It offers full-bodied Brunello opulence to enjoy over the near or medium term, and the wine delivers dried fruit flavors of prune and fig to close. The tannins are velvety and add to the richness of the rather upfront and immediate mouthfeel. An ample 250,000 bottles were created. (Monica Larner)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2023
Depths of dried black cherry come together with cedar shavings and worn leather as the darkly alluring 2019 Brunello di Montalcino slowly evolves in the glass. This is surprisingly juicy and energetic, with a pure blend of red fruits and inner florals coasting along a fresh acidity stream. Fine tannins settle in through the finish as the 2019 takes on a youthful tension, puckering the cheeks as tart cranberry notes fade through the youthfully chewy finale. (Eric Guido)
