Where It's From
Appellation / Chianti
The Chianti region in central Tuscany produces the internationally-famous red wine of the same name. With a long history, the wines of Chianti have evolved through the years. At one point, Chianti was typically a blend of Sangiovese (the primary red grape used in the region) and several other grapes, including white grapes like Trebbiano and Malvasia. As wine trends and palettes have changed, most growers have eliminated the white grapes from their Chianti since they often caused the wines to be too light. Likewise, Chianti used to be recognized for it's distinct, squatty, straw-covered bottles, but producers have moved away from that since those bottles grew to be recognized as emblematic of a lesser quality wine.
All that aside, there are many world-class wines produced in Chianti, especially in the Chianti Classico zone located in the center of the region. Here you'll find medium-bodied, dry reds with firm tannins and high acidity. These wines are tremendous for pairing with Italian foods of all sorts.
Region / Tuscany
There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

A jeweled red color, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino La Cerbaiola is wonderfully detailed on the nose with aromas of ripe cherries, cedar, dried roses, fresh leather, and mint. It carries beautifully onto the palate, with a medium to full-bodied frame and ripe tannins woven together with warming spice and fresh acidity. Everything you hope for, with lovely purity and fantastic length, this superb offering from Salvioni is complete and a benchmark wine for the vintage. Drink 2027–2050. 9900 bottles produced. Lifted floral notes of lilacs and rose hips, followed by a mix of red fruit and spices. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Balanced overall. Needs some more time to soften and a touch more fruit. Drink after 2027. (James Suckling)
Red with an orange tinge, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino is ripe with red cherry candies, dried flowers, sweet herbs, and baked red fruit. Vanilla and toasted coconut open the nose of this wine, before being joined by bright strawberry-cherry and stony underbrush. Strawberries and wild green watermelon notes perk up the palate, with more vanilla and also milk chocolate. Tannins are beginning to uncoil but acid remains present and accounted for. The 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino pours a magenta/ruby color and is highly expressive with aromas of mixed berries, herbes de Provence, sweet tobacco, and candied violets. This full-bodied Brunello is flush with sweet tannins, a richly textured mid-palate, and an impressive finish. It retains very nice purity and has the potential to age over the next 15–20 years. This tightly packed version is resonant and persistent, with fine integration of all its components, despite being compact and austere today, revealing cherry, raspberry, rose, earth and mineral flavors. The certified organic Col d’Orcia 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows ripe fruit, blackberry, earthy notes, licorice and, generally speaking, a much bigger and riper fruit profile compared to its peers. It offers full-bodied Brunello opulence to enjoy over the near or medium term, and the wine delivers dried fruit flavors of prune and fig to close. The tannins are velvety and add to the richness of the rather upfront and immediate mouthfeel. An ample 250,000 bottles were created. (Monica Larner)
Depths of dried black cherry come together with cedar shavings and worn leather as the darkly alluring 2019 Brunello di Montalcino slowly evolves in the glass. This is surprisingly juicy and energetic, with a pure blend of red fruits and inner florals coasting along a fresh acidity stream. Fine tannins settle in through the finish as the 2019 takes on a youthful tension, puckering the cheeks as tart cranberry notes fade through the youthfully chewy finale. (Eric Guido)
