Salvioni Brunello di Montalcino 2018 / 750 ml.

Item#: 99657

RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Mar 2023
The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino La Cerbaiola shows pretty color saturation with shiny highlights of dark garnet and black ruby. The bouquet is punchy and bright, but you also get a good dose of primary fruit with black cherry and dried currant. This is one of only a handful of wines from 2018 that gives confidence in terms of its cellar-aging potential. The tannins still need time to gain polish and softness, and the fresh acidity so beautifully locks those flavors and perfumes in place. The Salvioni family has beat the odds in a challenging vintage. Exactly 9,269 bottles were released. (Monica Larner)

Where It's From

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Bright red. Highly perfumed nose offers red cherry, rose petal, violet, tobacco and earth tones, with blood orange nuances providing added lift. Juicy, spicy and sweet, with very concentrated, multifaceted flavours of sour cherry, liquid stones, and candied violet. Harmonious, vibrant acidity lifts and extends the flavors on the supple yet firm finish. Approachable now but structured to age, this exceptionally well-balanced, pure, concentrated wine may well be the best Rosso di Montalcino of the vintage.

Lively dark red. Very pretty aromas and flavors of red cherry, peach and plum, made more interesting by herbal and earthy strokes. Juicy and fresh, finishes long, clean and smooth with similar flavors to the aromas. For its price point and category level, an outstanding wine.

The Camigliano 2018 Rosso di Montalcino pours from the bottle with a cheery ruby color that is luminous and bright. This is a lean-bodied red wine that shows fresh aromas of redcurrant, candied cherry and even a touch of summer peach or nectarine. The fruit offers a naturally sweet plateau in the mouth, however the wine’s acidity and its tonic personality have the final word. This wine has the freshness to pair with fried mozzarella balls or wedges of Pecorino cheese.

The 2018 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Silineo takes some time to open up in the glass, dusty and floral, yet beneath, I’m finding musky blackberries and hints of cedary spice. Its textures are silky-smooth and pliant, contrasted by floral-tinged tart berries and a flourish of sour citrus that keeps the expressions lively. A hint of wild herbs and a gentle grip of tannin lingers. The Silineo is primarily Sangiovese, with a bit of Merlot and Corolino that spends seven months refining in tonneaux, followed by another eleven months in large Slavonian oak casks. (Eric Guido)

The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino opens nicely in the glass, drawing upon more intensity and depth as it does. It shows firm lines and a fleshed-out mouthfeel that encourages plenty of layering and textural richness. That velvety quality is the enduring signature of this estate, one that has achieved consistent results over the years. The only outlier to this pretty portrait is a 15% alcohol content that, although well absorbed by the wine’s texture, does risk becoming a distraction. Exactly 28,666 bottles were made. Petrolo Torrione 2018 / 750 ml.

A red with plenty of blackberry, black-olive, floral and oyster-shell character. It’s full-bodied, yet layered, extremely polished and beautiful. A dusty texture. Hazelnut and walnut undertones. From organically grown grapes. A little more merlot and cabernet sauvignon in the blend. Gorgeous now, but better after 2021 and onwards.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Oct 2020
This is such a fun edition of this wine with a fluttering heart sketched onto the front label. I imagine that the heart could be dedicated to proprietor Luca Sanjust’s rambunctious mother who recently passed away. Made with organic fruit, the Petrolo 2018 Val d’Arno di Sopra Torrione is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The wine opens to a dark and rich appearance with punchy aromas of tart cherry and wild berry. Warm aromas of tobacco, spice and cedar wood appear gradually as the wine opens in the glass. An ample 50,000 bottles and 1,500 magnums were produced.

Petrolo’s 2018 Torrione is fabulous. Deep, inky and generous, the 2018 packs a serious punch. Ripe dark red fruit, chocolate, spice, leather and tobacco are all kicked up a few notches, with sweet floral top notes that add aromatic lift. The 2018 is an especially boisterous Torrione, with all the elements in the right place. In a word: delicious.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2020
Straddles a Bordeaux character with Tuscan leanings of wild herbs, tar and underbrush flanking the core of black currant, blackberry and pencil shaving flavors. It’s firm and long, with a muscular grip on the finish. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2029. 4,100 cases made, 700 cases imported.
