View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

View more wines from Italy

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

JS8888 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, July 21, 2020
Plum and berry character with some orange-peel undertones. Medium body. Easy finish. Drink now.
VN8888 pts. - Vinous - May 2020
The 2019 Donna Laura Ali takes some time to open up in the glass, as hints of young strawberry and savory herbs evolve to show sweet tea leaves and florals. On the palate, soft textures give way to ripe orchard fruits with a twang of zesty acids and minerals. The finish is long, gaining energy through residual acids with notes of sweet melon lingering throughout.
SP8787 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2021
There’s good grip to this red, whose cherry, earth and wild herb flavors stand up to it. A tad dry on the finish, but this should work well with salume and tomato sauces. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now. 38,000 cases made, 18,000 cases imported.

This has intense spice and and floral character, with violets, bell peppers, morello cherries, cloves and tomato leaves on the nose. It’s medium-bodied with sleek tannins. Dense and compact palate. Some walnut notes at the end. Try after 2023.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Feb 2023
Representing a big production of 280,000 bottles, the Tenuta di Nozzole 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Nozzole hits the mark. The wine’s attractiveness is enhanced by its value price tag as well as its genuine aromas of dark fruit, earth and lavender bud. It reveals a mid-weight texture and plenty of nice freshness. Sure, the flavor profile is pretty standard for the appellation, but it’s a sure bet with grilled meat or pasta. (Monica Larner)

The 2019 Chianti Clássico Nuovo is 100% old-vine Sangiovese aged in concrete. Bright and effusive, with striking aromatic presence, the Nuovo is an absolute delight. Nervy, persistent tannins and bright acids are a reminder we are in Radda. This mid-weight Chianti Clássico has so much to offer. Bright red fruit, white pepper, chalk and dried flowers linger. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2022
Super savory, featuring eucalyptus, rosemary, sanguine and cherry flavors underscored by a saline note. This has grip and freshness, with a lingering finish. Drink now through 2028. 400 cases made, 130 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Isole e Olena Cepparello 2019 / 750 ml.

2019 / 750 ml.

Item #: 98908

VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2019 Cepparello has closed down quite a bit since I tasted it last year, as if all of its energy is focused inward. That won’t be an issue in another few years’ time, but for now readers should resist any temptation to open bottles. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous Sangiovese fruit, along with hints of blood orange, spice, cedar, mint and tobacco, all wrapped together by plush, silky contours. The purity of the fruit is just striking. In 2019, Cepparello is more finesse than power. I expect it will age beautifully over the next several decades. (Antonio Galloni)

So much licorice and fennel seed with black cherry and a hint of tomato paste. Medium body, round texture and savory flavors. Pretty and fresh at the end, with subtle flavors. Drink now or hold.

2019 / 750 ml.

Item #: 576

JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, August 8, 2022
Aromas of crushed stones, dark berries and blueberries follow through to a medium to full body with creamy tannins and a medium-chewy finish. Chocolate at the end. Sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Two or three years of bottle age will bring this around nicely. Drink after 2024. (James Suckling)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Feb 2023
A blend of 44% Sangiovese, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, the 2019 Modus is a very contemporary wine with soft extraction, lots of dark fruit and gentle tannins spread over a full-bodied style. You get sunshine and warm Tuscany in the glass, and although this blend of grapes tells you less about its territory, it gives you a generous glass to pair with grilled meats. Black cherry is followed by pencil shaving, sweet earth and barbecue spice. Only the 15% alcohol content is a little too much. (Monica Larner)

RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Apr 2004
The most important wine in the line is the 2000 Romitorio, made at the firm’s Santedame estate in Chianti Classico and an innovative blend of Sangiovese and Colorino. The latter grape, which resembles Petit Verdot in its richness in coloring material and tannins, works very well with Sangiovese, giving a very dark and deep colored wine, potent and alcoholic on the nose with notes of roasted fruit, ink, minerals, and scorched tar and intense, powerful flavors. It is slightly tannic at the moment but packed and layered, sweet in its fruit, mouth-filling and solid in its texture. Drink: 2006–2018.
