Where It's From

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Country / Italy

View more wines from Italy

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

The 2017 Geremia is a revelation. It might be even better than the 2015 or 2016, which is saying a lot. Soaring aromatics make a strong first impression. In 2017, the fruit profile leans more into the red fruit end of the spectrum. The warm, dry year yielded a Geremia that is unusually open. I doubt too many of the estate’s fans will have a problem with that given how long these wines usually take to open. Today, the 2017 Geremia is a total pleasure bomb. Don’t miss it. (Antonio Galloni)

Intense, from the saturated black cherry and blackberry aromas and flavors to the tightly wound structure, with menthol and eucalyptus accents chiming in on the lightly astringent finish. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2028. 850 cases made, 350 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2014 Chianti Classico Vigneto San Marcellino is dark, sumptuous and super-expressive. Like all of the wines here, the 2014 San Marcellino needs at least a few years in bottle to truly show everything it has, but there is more than enough here to provide for engaging drinking for many years to come. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous scents of black cherry, plum, menthol, licorice and smoke. The 2014 is a striking, complete wine.

Blackberries, black cherries and a hint of earth on the nose. Full body. Chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Tangy acidity at the end. Needs time to soften, but I like the brightness from the acidity. Nicely done for the vintage. Drink or hold.

A thick, honeyed dessert white boasting caramel, fig, dark-roasted coffee beans, walnut and brown butter flavors. It’s luscious texture is matched by a vibrant acidity, keeping this focused and clean on the long, complex aftertaste. Drink now through 2033. 166 cases made, 50 cases imported.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2019
The 2009 Vin Santo is a rich, exotic wine, as it always is. Readers will find one of the richest most intense Vin Santos being made today. Plush, tropical and ample in feel, Rocca di Montegrossi’s Vin Santo is bold and racy to the core. The 350 grams of residual sugar leave the wine with tremendous textural plushness.
WS9494 pts. - Wine & Spirits - April 1, 2020
Marco Ricasoli produces one of the most opulent and complex Vin Santos in Tuscany. In his 2009, rich flavors of molasses, white fig and dried apricot are couched in an unctuous texture and lifted by a cool layer of slatey minerality. The wine aged for up to seven years in an array of small casks (50 and 100 liter, made from cherry, oak and mulberry wood), gaining notes of anise, clove and ginger. Despite a whopping 325 grams per liter of residual sugar, the wine finishes on a fresh, lifted note, brightened by hints of menthol and orange peel.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2020
The 2009 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico is loaded with scents of dried fig, caramel, dried flowers, toffee and brown spices. Although the flavors are quite intense, the wine is a bit lighter than it usually is, with less mid-palate depth and overall plushness.

There’s purity to the cherry, strawberry, rose, mineral and herb aromas and flavors in this solidly built red, which shows excellent balance and length. The muscular finish begs for more time for the beautiful fruit to assimilate. Best from 2025 through 2042. 1,700 cases made, 800 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Lots of blackberry, black-cherry and lavender aromas with some sage. Medium to full body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Linear and polished red. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

You drive through a postcard-perfect panorama of cypress-lined roads and sun-lit farmhouses as you approach the tiny hamlet of Bossi on the southern side of the appellation. The organic Castello di Bossi 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione reveals a dark core of black fruit that is surrounded by flinty mineral, spice and black licorice. This wine should become even silkier and softer with more bottle age. This 20,000-bottle release will hit the market this fall. (Monica Larner)
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2023
Woodsy aromas of pine needles and underbrush blend with spices and herbs before a distinctive note of anise takes over on the nose. On the palate, herbaceous, earthy flavors remain dominant, joined by black cherries and finishing with the citric, astringent bite of orange pith. (Danielle Callegari)
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2023
The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Bossi is laced with dark red cherry, incense, tobacco, game, spice and licorice. Dense and a bit wild, the 2019 has plenty of personality. This really needs quite a bit of air to emerge, but there is plenty of stuffing there. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2019 Chianti Colli Fiorentini is a bold, juicy wine. Succulent red cherry, plum, spice and tobacco race across the palate as this fleshy, inky Chianti shows off its considerable charms. The 2019 is not super complex, but it is immediate, bold and undeniably delicious. (Antonio Galloni)

Aromas of ripe dark-skinned berries, new leather and underbrush lift out of the glass. On the easygoing, enjoyable palate, lithe tannins and fresh acidity accompany dried cherry, white pepper and a hint of star anise. (Kerin O’Keefe)
