Poggio Nardone Brunello di Montalcino 2016 / 750 ml.

Item#: 94802

JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, November 11, 2020
Intensely earthy nose of dried porcini mushrooms and truffles. Perfumed, fresher fruit on the palate with red cherries, cranberries and some dark chocolate. This is a well structured, full red with grippy yet fine-grained and pretty tannins. Give it a few years to soften. Drink after 2024.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2020
The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino offers richness and extra fruit density with fleshy cherry and plum followed by spice, tar, tobacco and campfire ash. This expression embraces a contemporary taste profile with fermentation and aging in oak. This results in softness and textural richness that feels especially velvety and snug in this vintage. There is some tightness on the tannins but that should subside within the next few years. Some 10,000 bottles were produced.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2020
The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is a dark and brooding expression of the vintage. Crushed plums, black cherry, tobacco and moist soil tones form up in the glass. It’s velvety-smooth, cast across a medium-bodied frame with balancing acids and a polished display of blackberry, balsamic spice and inner violet florals. The density and concentration of primary fruits combined with the wine’s fine tannin profile promises many years of development. That said, there’s something deeply alluring, almost animalistic and slightly rustic about the 2016 Poggio Nardone that keeps me coming back to the glass.

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

The 2016 Brunello is lifted with dried raspberry, orange peel, thyme, and dusty earth. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh cherry fruit, Mediterranean herbs, and a saline mineral finish. The tannins are fine-grained with refreshing and balanced acidity. This red opened up and stayed fresh for days. Enjoy over the next 15 years, 2021–2036. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A lovely, polished young Brunello with black cherries and floral, orange-peel and some mineral notes. It’s full-bodied and very fine-tannined with a long, focused finish. Give it two or three years to open. Better after 2022.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2020
La Poderina’s 2016 Brunello di Montalcino shows a lot of charm and grace, with a bouquet that is defined not so much by the ripeness of its fruit but by the many nuances hidden directly under the surface. The fruit shows lifted red tones with cherry and dried raspberry, but it also offers very precise minerality with crushed limestone and chalk that adds points of dustiness or dryness to the bouquet (and ultimately subtracts from the density of the mouthfeel). These lithe background tones shape what is fundamentally a very elegant, streamlined and pretty Brunello. I am very happy to recommend this new release (with 65,000 bottles to hit the market in March 2021) from La Poderina.

A pure and focused version, with cherry, strawberry and currant fruit shaded by mineral and tobacco accents. Vibrant and harmonious, this is all about the fruit, with a well-integrated structure and terrific length on the finish. Best from 2024 through 2045. 2,000 cases made, 750 cases imported.

Wow. This is really rich and layered with velvety tannins that coat the palate. It’s full-bodied with ripe tannins and a finish of black cherries, cedar, walnuts, dried mushrooms and dried leaves. Needs time to soften. Better after 2024.

Siro Pacenti is the estate behind some of the most contemporary and fruit-froward wines made in Montalcino. That said, the wines can sometimes feel a bit monotone and lacking in nuance because of the very powerful oak (especially when tasted this young). For sure, the Siro Pacenti 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli is decidedly more focused on black fruit aromas rather than red fruit brightness, and it follows through with a healthy delivery of cedar, toasted spice, pencil shaving and campfire ash. Blackberry, fresh prune and plum cede to those oak-driven aromas. Like the other wines from this producer, I found that the oak tannins are not approachable in the near term. You really need to give this wine more time in the bottle. Siro Pacenti farms beautiful and carefully manicured vineyards on the north side of Montalcino. This is a 25,000-bottle production.

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Cosimo from Palazzo takes things to a dark and richer place without sacrificing the energy and primary intensity that I’ve come to expect from this estate. An earthy mix of ripe blackberry and cherry is complemented by balsamic spice and black licorice. It’s velvety-smooth with excellent density to its ripe red fruits, yet not weighty or tiring in any way, as cooling acids and minerals balance the expression perfectly. Its tannins can be felt only in the finish, as this folds in upon itself and leaves you wondering what further depths will be revealed over time. Dedicated to the family’s father who passed in 2012, the Cosimo is from a parcel of the oldest vines in the vineyard, first planted by Cosimo Loia over thirty-five years ago. It’s a gorgeous wine. This was tasted over the course of two days and only got better. (Eric Guido)

This opens with aromas recalling pipe tobacco, blue flower, ripe woodland berry and oak-driven spice. Full bodied and savory, the enveloping palate features mature Marasca cherry, baked plum, vanilla and licorice accompanied by velvety, close-grained tannins. Drink 2024–2034. (Kerin O’Keefe)

A dense, layered red with berry, walnut and cedar aromas and flavors. Some fruit tea, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins and a solid finish. Tight and tannic. Give this three to four years to open. Drink after 2024. (James Suckling)
JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/4/2021
This wine is dedicated to the memory of Cosimo Loia, who founded the estate in 1983. The Cosimo botting comes from the oldest vines of the estate, planted by Cosimo himself. The 2016 Cosimo Brunello is warm with fresh cherry fruit, baking spice, cedar, and sage. The palate is generous and ripe, with pure fruit and supple tannins. It was aged for 40 months in Slavonian oak barrels and French tonneaux. There is an approachability within its classic structure that is welcoming to drinking now. 2021–2031. (Audrey Frick)

A dusting of bittersweet chocolate coats the black cherry and blueberry fruit in this firmly structured red. Bitter almond and earth accents chime in on the dry finish. Best from 2021 through 2035. 79,166 cases made.

Cool and perfumed 2016 Brunello with black cherries, flowers and crushed stones. Medium to full body with firm, chewy tannins, yet polished and very silky. Mineral and seaweed undertones. Just a hint of bitterness. Drink after 2023.

This wine represents a selection of fruit from vineyards near the property’s postcard-perfect Castello, and it’s often the most representative of the new releases presented each year by Castello Banfi. From a classic and balanced vintage, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura shows beautiful depth and balance with dark fruit, cassis, dried cherry, licorice, balsam herb and earthy tones. The wine is symmetrical, tight and elegant with long, silky tannins. This is the full Banfi package.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2021
There’s a lot going on in this bone-dry yet complex red, whose cherry, strawberry and plum fruit meshes with iron, tobacco, wild thyme and Mediterranean pine flavors, while the dusty tannins exert their presence on the lingering finish. Think hearty stews or wild boar ragù. Best from 2025 through 2043. 160 cases imported.
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/4/2021
The 2016 Poggio alle Mura Brunello di Montalcino was aged for two years in 40% large French oak casks and 60% in French oak barriques. It offers concentrated aromatics of confected black cherry, vanilla, tobacco, and tar, and the palate is full of grounding structure and flavors of unsweetened black licorice, cherry pit, and fresh Mediterranean herbs. This will warrant time in the cellar to mature, over the next 15 to 20 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2020
The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura from Banfi impresses with a dark, savory and exotic display, with woodland berries, sage, ashen soil tones and hints of tobacco. There are depths of silky textures here, lifted by cooling minerality and hints of mint. Its red and black fruits are polished, as this shows wonderful symmetry and poise, with flavors of licorice, dark chocolate and purple-tinged florals toward the close. You can feel its youthful structure, but there are plenty of primary components here to balance them out. Very nice.
