Dark and inky, yet lively, exuding flavors of blackberry, plum and spice, with hints of chocolate and iron. The tannins are tucked into the rich texture. Finishes long and assertive. Needs time. Best from 2017 through 2025. 2,500 cases made.

Where It's From

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Country / Italy

View more wines from Italy

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

A really exotic nose with so much dried herb character, ranging from thyme and sage to Thai basil. Then there’s more familiar and equally appealing dark blackcurrants, crushed stones and lavender. Full body with very refined tannins that both coat and caress the palate. A long, chewy finish. Drink in 2022.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2018
The 2015 Il Carbonaione presents a thick and darkly saturated side of Sangiovese. This expression opens to a dark garnet color with ripe aromas of black cherry, prune and blackberry. This edition delivers extra thickness and richness, yet that mid-weight approach is never compromised. This wine should spread out and gain in volume as it evolves in the bottle. Some 26,000 bottles were made (whereas only 2,000 bottles of the 2015 Capogatto were produced).

This is lush, featuring a light touch of oak spice shading black cherry, blackberry and plum flavors. Firm yet well-integrated, with a lingering, fresh finish. Sangiovese. Drink now through 2022. 2,200 cases made, 750 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Bright amber-red. Very pure strawberry and red cherry aromas and flavors are complicated by a strong mineral element. Multilayered and complex, this very suave, beautiful Brunello finishes long and with noteworthy spicy kick.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Feb 2017
The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Phenomena boats bigger bones and a more voluptuous style. The wine sees a whopping 51 months in oak and has had ample time to put on weight, structure and fleshiness as a result. Blackberry and cherry confit rise from the bouquet with exotic spice and tobacco in tow. Thankfully, the wine is not too heavy or thick. But it is reflective of the warm vintage for sure with soft tannins and dark fruit flavors.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2017
Aromas of underbrush, tobacco, used leather, scorched earth and a suggestion of oak slowly take shape in the glass. On the palate, round velvety tannins underscore raspberry compote, dried cherry and baking spice. It’s rather forward so drink over the next several years.
