Pian Dell'Orino Brunello di Montalcino Vigneto del Versante 2014 / 750 ml.

Item#: 91689

I’ve always said that Jan Hendrik Erbach is a maniac when it comes to the details. This wine is normally called “Vigneti del Versante,” with the Italian word for vineyards (“vigneti”) in plural because fruit comes from more than one site, but just this one time, the wine is called “Vigneto” (in the singular tense) because fruit was sourced from a single vineyard instead. The 2014 Brunello di Montalcino Vigneto del Versante sees fruit sourced from the Scopeta vineyard (planted in 2003), and this single-vineyard expression offers spicy fruit with dark berries and plum. The wine shows great fiber and density, with much of that power coming from the heavier soils of the vineyard site. This is a beautiful expression from a difficult vintage. The wine will be released this autumn.

Bright red. Flint and rosemary nuances complement the red cherry and mineral aromas and flavors. Juicy and fresh, this medium-bodied Brunello showcases a refined mouthfeel and a typical cool-climate personality. A hint of sweet spices on the long finish is very typical of Sesta, where Pian dell’Orino’s Scopeta vineyard is located (in 2014, the Brunello Vigneti del Versante is a blend of grapes from the Scopeta and Bassolino di Sopra vineyards). Only 1,700 bottles made compared to 9,000 in very good vintages.

Where It's From

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Country / Italy

View more wines from Italy

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

The 2014 Chianti Classico Vigneto San Marcellino is dark, sumptuous and super-expressive. Like all of the wines here, the 2014 San Marcellino needs at least a few years in bottle to truly show everything it has, but there is more than enough here to provide for engaging drinking for many years to come. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous scents of black cherry, plum, menthol, licorice and smoke. The 2014 is a striking, complete wine.

Blackberries, black cherries and a hint of earth on the nose. Full body. Chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Tangy acidity at the end. Needs time to soften, but I like the brightness from the acidity. Nicely done for the vintage. Drink or hold.

The spectacular 2011 Rosso di Montalcino sees fruit sourced from the organic Bassolino vineyard in the southern part of the appellation. The wine shows enormous definition and focus with bright berry layering and fresh menthol at the end. Firm Sangiovese structure holds it together. Drink: 2014–2018.

This is the only new release from Pian dell’Orino at this time. The 2014 Rosso di Montalcino is bright and crisp with wild berry fruit, earthy notes and a drying touch of crushed mineral. That firm acidic grip is very important to the overall intensity and length of this centered Rosso. These are results of which to be proud. The alcoholic impact is moderate, making this wine easy to drink over the course of a long meal

This wine was not made in 2011, 2013 or 2014. The next edition after this one will be 2015. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Bassolino di Sopra will be released in October. This wine immediately grabs your attention and focus thanks to the incredible purity and intensity that lifts so gracefully from the glass. The bouquet presents aromas of dried cherry, cassis, freshly tilled soil and wild rose. The wine carries itself with majesty, floating or gliding over the palate with silky smoothness. The longer you contemplate the bouquet, the more aware you become of its complexity and depth. It closes with dark and almost spicy fruit intensity.

Dark bright red. Meaty, floral and saline nuances to the brooding aromas and flavors of ripe red fruit. Big and tactile, with youthfully chewy aromas that will require patience. This is slightly more floral and less fruity than the 2012 Brunello Vigneti del Versante, but each wine will win its share of fans.
