Pertimali Sassetti Livio Brunello di Montalcino 2012 / 750 ml.

Item#: 86577

WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - April 1, 2018
Scents of jasmine and fresh herbs give way to vivid flavors of red cherry and sour plum. Those lifted aromas and the wine’s cool, mineral tannins are indicative of fruit grown in Montalcino’s northern sector, on the Montosoli hill. Decant it to allow those tannins to soften, but keep some in your glass to enjoy the aromatic development.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2017
The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino offers bright intensity and an elegant approach. The bouquet is redolent of cassis, dried blackberry, toasted almond and pipe tobacco. There are sweet notes from the fruit and savory notes developed over the wine’s long aging period. Both aspects are nicely contrasted against each other. This wine should continue to evolve and will put on more weight with age.
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 15, 2017
This is spicy, complementing the cherry and leather flavors with vanilla and licorice details. Firms up, with a layer of tannins gripping the finish. Best from 2020 through 2033. 3,300 cases made.

Where It's From

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

An opulent style, featuring lush black cherry, blackberry and plum fruit shaded by licorice, tobacco and spice flavors. Powerful and succulent, with a well-integrated structure and a long earth- and spice-tinged aftertaste. Best from 2017 through 2024. 1,000 cases made.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2015
This wine was upgraded from Riserva status to Gran Selezione with the recent changes to the denomination. The 2012 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Picchio opens to a rich and beautifully saturated appearance. This is a plush, rich, and modern wine with a seamless presentation of dark fruit aromas that are comfortably set against exotic spice and tobacco. There is a bit of tightness and sour cherry on the close that should flesh out with a few more years of bottle aging. The wine is composed of 95% Sangiovese with 5% Canaiolo.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2015
Aromas of ripe plum, scorched earth, dark baking spice, toast and a hint of leather open up in the glass. The ripe palate delivers ripe black cherry, grilled herb, pipe tobacco and a coffee note. Velvety tannins hold up the savory flavors.

Firm and dense, this red sports cherry, leather, cigar box and sweet spice flavors. A juiciness midpalate adds depth. Finishes with tannins and a combination of earth, mineral and tobacco notes. Best from 2022 through 2038. 1,000 cases made.
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, April 4, 2018
An extremely dense and complex red with dried berry, cherry, floral and spice. Full body, powerful with a wealth of fruit and chewy tannins. This really is intense and beautiful. Goes on for minutes. Big wine. Drink in 2021.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Feb 2018
Showing a dark color and appearance, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a beautiful wine. The 2012 vintages deliver some great surprises, like the ones you get here. The wine is dark and powerful with full throttle aromas of black cherry and blackberry. Spice, leather and balsam herb appear at the back. It sports firm tannins and a robust structure that will carry it forward over its aging years.
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2018
Tobacco, baked plum, dark spice and new leather aromas mingle with a truffle note on this earthy savory red. The aromas follow over to the taut medium-bodied palate along with fleshy black cherry and star anise. Chewy tannins provide the framework. Drink 2019–2027.
VN92+92+ pts. - Vinous - Apr 2018
Bright red. Spicy red berries, camphor, black pepper and balsamic oils on the enticing nose. Clean, fresh and very flinty, offering red and black fruit flavors that are nicely supported by youthfully chewy rising tannins. The finish is long, clean, fresh and nervous, but this Brunello’s oaky backbone currently overwhelms its fruit. Which one of the two contestants (oak vs. fruit) will win the battle? I am not sure I have the answer. Pertimali only makes the Brunello Riserva when they are convinced the wine might become exceptional (the 1999, 2006, 2007, and 2010 were the most recent vintages of the Riserva prior to this one) and is made with a super-selection of grapes picked directly in the vineyard to make the Riserva (the grapes tend to be harvested as late as possible but without risking overripeness). The wine is aged in large oak barrels for at least four or four-and-a-half years, then lies another year or 18 months in bottle.

Altesino Brunello di Montalcino

2015 / 750 ml.

Item #: 92493

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2020
The Altesino 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows beautiful depth and latitude, with broad fruit aromas of dark cherry and cassis that recall the warmth and golden sunlight of the vintage. The wine is deceivingly streamlined in terms of mouthfeel, but that slim and buttoned-down backbone supports a broad range of flavors and sensations, from lavender essence and camphor ash to moist soil and toasted spice. All of these elements are delivered with impressive harmony and unity, and I expect that this wine will continue on a slow, steady and satisfying aging trajectory over the next 10 years or more. Fruit is sourced from across 21 hectares of vines with tufaceous limestone soils and Alberese rock, which contributes to the freshness and balanced structure of the wine. The wine was bottled in June 2019 (with 150,000 bottles made), and this wine was released in January 2020.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2020
Juicy, featuring licorice, wild herb and earth notes that complement the macerated cherry and strawberry fruit flavors. Balanced, with light tannins leaving a dusty feel on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2038. 12,500 cases made, 3,000 cases imported.

JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, December 1, 2022
Intense aromas of black cherries, lavender and spice, such as nutmeg. Some sandalwood and bark, too. Full-bodied with a solid core of fruit and tannins for the vintage. Rather chewy, suggesting that additional bottle age is needed. Try after 2026. (James Suckling)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022
Depths of dark, balsamic-tinged black cherry, plum sauce and autumnal spice make the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino impossible to ignore. This is velvety to the core, nearly opulent in feel, with a dense wave of ripe red fruits complemented by nuances of sweet lavender and tobacco. It leaves the palate clenched with fine tannins and primary concentration, creating a classic sensation that transcends the vintage. Nearly a minute goes by, and hints of cocoa and sweet herbs continue to resonate. Wow! Production at the Pertimali estate was down by 20% due to the spring frost, and the decision was made to place all of the juice usually intended for the Riserva into the straight Brunello, the result being one of the top wines of the vintage. (Eric Guido)
JD94+94+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/6/2023
Rich with compact and velvety layers, the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino offers fleshy aromas of fig, black licorice, mocha, and roasted sage. It is full-bodied and displays more freshness and transparency on the palate, although it remains fully ripe, with black cherry, plum, turned soil, and macerated violets. It has full and present ripe tannins, a hint of crushed rock, and a saline, savory finish. With its liqueur-like richness throughout, this is a fantastic expression, but it needs a couple of years in the cellar before drinking over the following 10. (Audrey Frick)

Ripe and juicy, this red reveals plum, cherry, earth, tobacco and menthol aromas and flavors. Well-structured, delivering dense, dusty tannins and ample fruit to match, with a long, complex finish. Best from 2025 through 2042. 4,000 cases made, 1,250 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

There’s something dark, animalistic and wild about the 2018 Rosso Montecucco. It’s an intense and energetic expression, yet powerful, showing crushed blackberries and wild herbs spiked with a twang of sour citrus. The textures are silky and pliant with masses of ripe fruits and wild berries offset by penetrating minerals and brisk acids. This tapers off long and lightly structured. A total success for the vintage.
