Isole e Olena Cepparello 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 98908

The 2019 Cepparello has closed down quite a bit since I tasted it last year, as if all of its energy is focused inward. That won’t be an issue in another few years’ time, but for now readers should resist any temptation to open bottles. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous Sangiovese fruit, along with hints of blood orange, spice, cedar, mint and tobacco, all wrapped together by plush, silky contours. The purity of the fruit is just striking. In 2019, Cepparello is more finesse than power. I expect it will age beautifully over the next several decades. (Antonio Galloni)

So much licorice and fennel seed with black cherry and a hint of tomato paste. Medium body, round texture and savory flavors. Pretty and fresh at the end, with subtle flavors. Drink now or hold.

Where It's From

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Country / Italy

View more wines from Italy

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Lots of ripe fruit flavors with orange peel and stony minerality. Medium- to full-bodied with an array of round, velvety tannins. Even and broad with a lingering finish. Very attractive. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

The Isole e Olena 2020 Chianti Classico opens to a dark ruby color and medium concentration. The bouquet offers pretty fruit aromas with dried cherry and raspberry. Those bright primary tones segue to crushed stone and potting soil. This playful, entry-level wine ends with a bright spot of sweet cherry. (Monica Larner)

A big, powerful syrah with a heady nose of violet essence, dried blueberries, sweet tobacco, mocha, vanilla, cracked pepper and grilled meat. Full-bodied with firm, ripe tannins and a chewy and fleshy palate. Delicious sweet-spice notes. Intense. Drink from 2023.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2022
The 2019 Syrah Colleziore Privara is quite delicate and silky in this vintage, with a distinctly red-fruited profile that is unusual. Spice, orange peel, dried flowers and white pepper lend brightness to a Syrah that is both deep and light on its feet. I especially admire the vibrancy here. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2023
Smooth and laced with blackberry, plum and bacon flavors, this red is well-wrought, with fine tannins and fresh acidity. Gains roundness and a drink me now feel from the fleshy texture. Syrah and Viognier. Drink now through 2030. 50 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Isole e Olena Cabernet Sauvignon | Collezione Privata 2017 / 750 ml.

Collezione Privata

VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2021
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Collezione Privata is another fabulous wine from Paolo De Marchi. Readers will have to be patient with the 2017, as it is a very young wine. History has taught me the Cabernet here ages exquisitely, but it needs time. I expect that will be the case here as well. Opening a bottle anytime soon is likely to be a mostly academic exercise.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Oct 2021
The Isole e Olena 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Collezione Privata delivers a lot of extra intensity and concentration, both pushed to extremes in this very hot and dry vintage that produced small, tight and thickly skinned clusters. Unfortunately, the tannins are also more aggressive and they work against the wine’s overall balance. Those tannins will soften to a degree with bottle age, but it’s hard to imagine that they will ever fully integrate. The exact blend in 2017 is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Production is also smaller this vintage with 5,000 bottles released.

Dark black cherry, blackberry, plum, eucalyptus, earth and iron flavors are embraced by beefy tannins in this red, which comes together on the lingering finish. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best from 2023 through 2030. 3,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2019 Trittico, a blend of Sargiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, is a fresh, fruity wine to drink now and over the next few years. Trittico is not super-complex, but it is inviting and tasty. (Antonio Galloni)

Vibrant acidity and refined tannins seep into the fabric of this round red, which is laced with cherry, raspberry and floral aromas and flavors. Mineral and underbrush accents add depth as this plays out on the long, dusty finish. Best from 2026 through 2043. 8,300 cases made, 2,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

From the sister property of Poggio di Sotto, San Giorgio Ugolforte’s 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino takes a youthful ruby hue and is a riper style of Brunello, with rounded aromas of black raspberries, candied violets, sweet cedar, and fresh Mediterranean herbs. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with ripe tannins and retains good freshness through its long finish. A lovely Brunello with a more rounded and approachable feel, it’s going to show at its best over the coming 12–15 years. (Audrey Frick)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Dec 2023
There is deep black fruit and black plum on the San Giorgio 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Ugolforte. although it takes a little patience to get there. The wine is restrained or closed initially, and it’s hard to draw anything out for the first 15 minutes or so after the bottle is opened. Once it gets going, you are treated to sweet cherry, redwood, almond biscotti and dried rose potpourri. It ages in large Slavonian oak casks. (Monica Larner)

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2023
This flight of three Biondi-Santi wines starts off on the right foot thanks to the pristine bouquet and lively fruit of the 2019 Rosso di Montalcino. This is the entry-level wine (although the price point certainly suggests otherwise). It shows very detailed and chiseled aromas of wild cherry, cassis, dried violet, rust and orange skin. The wine carries a strong structural frame; however, the mouthfeel is ethereal and light notwithstanding. (Monica Larner)
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/6/2023
The 2019 Rosso Di Montalcino is pure and energetic, with ripe cherry fruit, rose petals, orange zest, and spice. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and ripe, soft, supple fruit throughout, it is energetic and long on the palate, with a soft, coating mineral texture. Elegant, pure, and warming on the finish, with no harsh edges, its floral perfume lingers with notes of lavender, red berries, and refreshing salinity. Drink 2025–2040. (Audrey Frick)
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, October 5, 2022
Aromas of sliced citrus, cherry and flowers follow through to a medium body, with creamy tannins and crunchy fruit at the finish. Lovely combination of fruit and acidity. Very drinkable now but will age nicely. (James Suckling)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2022
The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino keeps me coming back to the glass to take in its dusty mix of dried strawberries and currants offset by lifting nuances of shaved pine and mint. Soft and round in expression, the 2019 impresses on its lush textures and vivid wild berry fruit. Through it all, a core of saline tension builds, mingling minerals with gentle tannins, as the 2019 finishes with a staining of concentration, yet maintains a lovely freshness. (Eric Guido)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2023
A refined Rosso, this evokes cherry, strawberry, floral and iron flavors aligned with a supple texture and firm structure. Harmonious and long, but needs some time to integrate. Drink now through 2033. 1,959 cases made, 500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

This red is all about finesse, delivering superb balance and complexity, with cherry, raspberry, earth and wild herb aromas and flavors. Succulent and charming, yet with a solid base of tannins and vivid acidity, this remains focused through the long aftertaste. Best from 2026 through 2042. 4,575 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2023
The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is remarkably pretty, wafting up with a blend of violets and lavender before giving way to steeped plum lifted by mint. This is racy and sleek, with cooling acidity and mineral tones that excite the palate. Juicy acidity enlivens tart wild berry fruits. The 2019 finds its center through the finish, as fine tannins emerge and a crunchy sensation lingers. Licorice and bitter blackberry notes taper off slowly. In a word, fantastic. The balance of complexity, structure and energy places the 2019 very high in my book. (Eric Guido)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Dec 2023
The Caprili 2019 Brunello di Montalcino reveals a very pretty bouquet with a level of ripe fruit and pure cherry essence that does not come easily to a wine aged five years following the harvest. The primary fruit remains intact in this vintage. This village bottling shows velvety richness and concentration that stems directly from that exceptional fruit quality. There is rich texturing and fine chalky tannins to close. Some 55,000 bottles were made. (Monica Larner)
