Where It's From
Region / Tuscany
There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.
Country / Italy
Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.
Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Lots of bark, mushroom and forest-flower aromas with crushed cherries. Complex. Medium body with lovely acid tension and a racy and pretty finish. Very fine tannins. Lots of energy here. Drink after 2025. (James Suckling)
A blast of pure cherry fruit erupts from the glass, with iron, tobacco and spice notes adding complexity. Lively and balanced, showing a chalky feel to its tannins on the lingering finish. Best from 2026 through 2042. 3,150 cases made, 660 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
The Poggio Antico 2019 Brunello di Montalcino has a pretty bouquet with a unique set of aromas that recall dried cherries with hints of rose potpourri or fragrant acacia wood. Those delicate floral notes give lift and energy to the bouquet. The only distraction is the 15% alcohol content. Otherwise, this wine is a good example of a classic vintage. Production is 37,800 bottles. (Monica Larner)

A rich magenta hue, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Poggio Al Granchio is a serious wine that amplifies things further and will need some decanting if opening now. Forward with great aromas of graphite, black cherry liqueur, cracked pepper, sage, and porcini, it’s full-bodied yet weightless on the palate and has phenomenal concentration while remaining elegant all the way through, it offers plush, velvety tannins and mineral undercurrents while retaining wonderful purity and a seamless texture. This stunning wine deserves several years in cellar. Drink 2026–2046. (Audrey Frick)
A deep well of blackberry, black currant and cherry fruit marks this succulent red, with accents of wild rosemary and mineral. Well-delineated and complex, echoing the fruit and savory notes on the long finish. Shows superb balance and harmony. Best from 2027 through 2043. 1,083 cases made, 103 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Granchio pulls the taster close to the glass to take in its beguiling aromatics. Rose and clove aromas give way to cinnamon-dusted red currants and a lifting hint of camphor. It’s elegant in style with silken textural depths and ripe wild berry fruits that saturate, all balanced by a stream of brisk acidity. Saline minerals stain the palate as the 2019 finishes long and structured. It holds its power in reserve as a pleasantly bitter tinge mingles with fine-grained tannins to create a youthfully tense sensation. This is a Poggio al Granchio for the ages. Bury your bottles deep. (Eric Guido)
From a site with schistic galestro clay soils, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Granchio is definitely the most complete and complex of these new releases from 2019 by Val di Suga. Fruit comes from an 18-hectare vineyard located at 430 to 450 meters in elevation. The wine offers more oozing richness and concentration in line with the character of the vintage with sweet cherry, blackberry, toasted cumin seed and pressed rose. This estate does a good job of maintaining the freshness of Sangiovese. Some 12,000 bottles were made. (Monica Larner)

The 2019 Trittico, a blend of Sargiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, is a fresh, fruity wine to drink now and over the next few years. Trittico is not super-complex, but it is inviting and tasty. (Antonio Galloni)

Delightful aromas of juicy red cherries, strawberries, rose petals and wild bush, together with hints of juniper and ground herbs. Medium-bodied with firm tannins and crisp acidity. Zesty and piquant with beautiful balance and finish. Plenty of fruit at the end. Give it more time to come around. Try after 2027. (James Suckling)
This is packed with ripe cherry, plum and raspberry fruit, with floral, mineral, juniper and wild herb accents adding depth and complexity. There’s plenty of energy and structure as well, providing excellent balance, with a long aftertaste. Best from 2027 through 2045. 10,000 cases made, 4,008 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
The Argiano 2019 Brunello di Montalcino comes out stronger than the previous 2018 and 2017 vintages, thanks to the precision and focus of its fruit flavors in this balanced vintage. It shows ample depth and volume, with sweet cherry and blackberry that fold into softly toasted spice and earth. Floral hints of lilac and iris make brief but poignant appearances. Velvety tannins and a nicely concentrated mid-weight palate give good staying power. This is a 120,000-bottle release. (Monica Larner)

The fruit is on the darker side for the vintage, evoking black cherry, blackberry and dark plum flavors, while earth and wild herb accents add detail. Tightly knit tannins quickly intervene, leaving a compact, powdery feel on the finish. Best from 2027 through 2043. 16,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
The 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino has a ruby/orange color and lifts with a citrus-tinged profile of dried orange peel, preserved cranberries, dusty earth, and sweet Mediterranean herbs. This continues to the palate with elegant structure in its fine tannins, an even spine of acidity, and notes of citrus peel and dried apricot on the finish. This is a very pretty style that will be best enjoyed over the next 10 years. 200,000 bottles produced. (Audrey Frick)
The Camigliano 2019 Brunello di Montalcino offers a combination of dark fruit, ripe blackberry and toasted cardamom or cumin seed from 24 months of aging in large oak casks. This organic wine shows lots of rich concentration and oak-driven intensity that fits within the context of classic Brunello. Ultimately, the wine mirrors a warm growing area with a mix of clay, sand and rocky soils. It delivers easy texture on the mid-palate with chalky tannins. This is a big release of 190,000 bottles. (Monica Larner)
Lots of dried fruit, such as of figs, dried plums and savory herbs, followed by lingering dried-meat and sweet-and-sour undertones. Medium-bodied with polished tannins. A slightly nutty aftertaste. From organically grown grapes. Drink now or hold. (James Suckling)

Aromas of crushed stones, dark berries and blueberries follow through to a medium to full body with creamy tannins and a medium-chewy finish. Chocolate at the end. Sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Two or three years of bottle age will bring this around nicely. Drink after 2024. (James Suckling)
A blend of 44% Sangiovese, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, the 2019 Modus is a very contemporary wine with soft extraction, lots of dark fruit and gentle tannins spread over a full-bodied style. You get sunshine and warm Tuscany in the glass, and although this blend of grapes tells you less about its territory, it gives you a generous glass to pair with grilled meats. Black cherry is followed by pencil shaving, sweet earth and barbecue spice. Only the 15% alcohol content is a little too much. (Monica Larner)

A super-clean, fruity red with juicy blackcurrant and dark cherry character. Medium-bodied with very fine, fruit-coated tannins and a fresh finish. 85% sangiovese, 10% cabernet sauvignon and 5% merlot. Screw cap. Delicious now. (James Suckling)
Vanilla and toasted coconut open the nose of this wine, before being joined by bright strawberry-cherry and stony underbrush. Strawberries and wild green watermelon notes perk up the palate, with more vanilla and also milk chocolate. Tannins are beginning to uncoil but acid remains present and accounted for. Lifted floral notes of lilacs and rose hips, followed by a mix of red fruit and spices. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Balanced overall. Needs some more time to soften and a touch more fruit. Drink after 2027. (James Suckling)
Red with an orange tinge, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino is ripe with red cherry candies, dried flowers, sweet herbs, and baked red fruit. This medium-bodied Brunello has an approachable texture. with ripe tannins and a linear, supple feel. It’s elegant and charming red to enjoy over the next 5–7 years. (Audrey Frick)

A well-defined and typical Chianti Rufina with aromas and flavors of berries and cherries, as well as darker, savory notes of bark and dried herbs. Medium body and grainy tannins that have a dusty-oak coating that absorbs the fruit flavors nicely and gives a long, firm and a slightly bitter, licoricy finish. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but will be better integrated in 2023.

Super sticky here, giving you all you ask for in a quality Vin Santo. Toffee, dried fruit and nutty notes on the nose. Full, viscous feel on the palate with a twist of citrus that turns to salt on the finish. Long and delicious! Nicely done. Enjoy now or hold for as long as you like.
Made with dried Sangiovese (80%), Trebbiano (10%) and Malvasia Toscana (10%), this opens with aromas of candied orange zest, maple syrup and dried fig. The concentrated, smooth palate offers eucalyptus, honey, black cherry jam and toasted almond that carry on to the long finish.
