Felsina Rancia Chianti Classico Riserva 2018 / 750 ml.

Item#: 96589

VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2021
The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is an absolutely stunning wine. The archetype of Rancia in the past has been of a big, potent Chianti Classico but in 2018, Rancia is a wine of mind-blowing elegance and finesse. Silky, perfumed and indescribably finessed, the 2018 dazzles from start to finish. It’s a magical wine in every way.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Oct 2021
The 2018 is an unusual vintage that shows an especially austere character. Off the bat, it must be said that the Fèlsina 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia would certainly benefit from more cellar time and a long drinking window. The Rancia is elegant and streamlined with a medium-bodied style that breaks from some of the more concentrated vintages we’ve seen in the past. The bouquet reveals a lot of dark or black character with blackcurrant, tar, resin, iron ore and a dusty hint of dry graham cracker (which reminds us of the vintage heat). Structurally, the wine offers a solid and firm footing, but it would benefit from further evolution.
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, August 11, 2021
This is really subtle and complex with cherry, herb, floral and sage aromas that follow through to a full body with firm, fine tannins that give form and energy to the wine. Racy and very fine. Drink or hold.
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2021
There is a green, leafy edge along with vanilla aromas surrounding the black cherry and resinous oak flavors on the palate in this sinewy red. Finishes on the chewy side, with austere tannins. Needs time. Best from 2024 through 2035. 4,000 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)

Where It's From

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Plums, cherry stones, button mushrooms, white pepper and bark on the nose. Lemon and cardamom too. Medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and fine, powdery tannins. Savory. Drink now or hold.

The 2020 Chiarti Classico Berardenga is a classic Fèlsina wine. It can be enjoyed now or cellared for 10–15 years. Classic Fèlsina savory, floral and tobacco accents play off a core of sweet Sangiovese fruit. This heady, strapping wine has a ton to offer. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous aromatic presence. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2022
A charming, harmonious Chianti Classico, this exudes cherry, plum and thyme flavors, with elements of earth and mineral. Delivers dense tannins that exert influence on the finish, yet this remains balanced. Drink now through 2028. 22,000 cases made, 15,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 1/28/2023
A pure and open wine out of the gate, the 2020 Chianti Classico Berardenga is fresh with aromas of pine sap, anise, and cherry lozenge. Medium bodied with fine tannin and a modest but refreshing finish, this is a fantastic entry point for the Felsina range, for casual drinking with braised meats or Bolognese. Drink 2023–2028. The 2018 Chianti Clássico Risetva is a powerful, brooding wine. Readers will have to be patient with the 2018, as it needs time to soften. The tannins are especially potent today. Time brings out a whole range of black cherry, plum, gravel, spice, game and leather notes. The Riserva spent 16 months in oak of various sizes. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2021
Dusty tannins set the stage for this cherry and wild herb-inflected red. Boasts plenty of fruit, orange zest and iron, yet still has to reveal all its charms. Compact finish in the end, but be patient. Best from 2024 through 2042. 5,833 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)

Ripe plum, French oak and violet aromas come to the forefront. The dense palate offers dried cherry, licorice and roasted coffee bean alongside fine-grained tannins. Drink through 2025. (Kerin O’Keefe)

Felsina Fontalloro 2018 / 750 ml.

2018 / 750 ml.

Item #: 96193

JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, August 4, 2021
A tight, fresh Fontalloro with dark cherry, chocolate and toasted oak. Some walnut, too. It’s full-bodied, yet polished and structured. Sort of shy. But this will develop really nicely with some bottle age. Drink after 2023.
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2021
The 2018 Fontalloro is bright, floral and full of energy. In most vintages, Fontalloro is quite open, but the 2018 is especially nervy and taut. That won’t be an issue in time, of course, but readers should plan on being patient. Sangiovese is so expressive here. A whole range of floral and savory accents lingers on the close. (Antonio Galloni)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 7th Oct 2021
To my palate, the 2018 vintage sometimes feels a little too ripe or baked. I was reminded of those characteristics when tasting the Fèlsina 2018 Fontalloro. There is plenty of dark fruit at its core, but this wine also reveals dry tones of jarred oregano, grilled Mediterranean herb, crushed aspirin and graham cracker. The mouthfeel is pleasantly lean and silky, and perhaps the wine delivers more in terms of length than it does weight or texture. A little more bottle age should help flesh out and soften these results. (Monica Larner)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2021
Black cherry and blackberry flavors are accented by earth, rosemary and tobacco in this sleek, incisive red, which is balanced and linear, with vibrant acidity driving the long finish, where a note of iron creeps into the mix. Sangiovese. Drink now. 3,750 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is incredibly polished and sophisticated. Silky tannins give the 2017 its racy, sleek personality. Over the last year, the 2017 has really settled into a gorgeous place. There is plenty of vintage 2017 intensity, but Rancia is distinctly medium in body and restrained. The wilder side of Sangiovese, one of the signatures of Rancia and Fèlsina more broadly, tastes a bit baked out. I can’t wait to see how the 2017 develops over the coming years and decades.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 6th Aug 2020
Rancia is always one of my favorite wines from this storied appellation (and the Castelnuovo Berardenga subzone). This vintage threw quite a few challenges at the winemaking team, but the Fèlsina 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia emerges intact, intense and beautiful. It is virtually unscathed by the heat and drought that marked this growing season. In fact, that brilliant radiance, linearity and energy of the Sangiovese grape comes through loud and clear. The bouquet is redolent of red fruit, wild berry, toasted almond, violet and potting soil. My score is a little lower (compared to past vintages) in terms of mouthfeel because I found this edition to be a bit shorter and less impactful on the finish, but not by much. It ages in barrique for up to 20 months. This vintage of Rancia saw 46,000 bottles released.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2020
Cherry, plum, juniper, earth and chocolate flavors highlight this sleek, intense red. There is depth and length here, along with a solid structure, yet this will require time to unravel and reveal all its facets. Best from 2022 through 2036. 3,300 cases made, 2,000 cases imported.

A juicy and pretty wine with berries, chocolate, and bark. Subtle. Medium-bodied with fine tannins that are slightly chewy and austere now but will soften nicely with age. Better after 2025. (James Suckling)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2023
A solidly built red introduced by aromas of mint, lavender and wild rosemary. Shows cherry, raspberry, earth, iron, sanguine and tobacco flavors allied to an almost viscous texture as this cruises to the long finish. Impressive now, yet will be better in three to five years. Best from 2026 through 2045. 5,000 cases made, 2,200 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2023
In a bottle with a black label, the Fèlsina 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardenga shows an open-knit quality with soft fruit flavors of dark cherry and baked plum. Those fruit flavors are followed by pretty mineral notes and light spice. That openness and those sweet cherry flavors are characteristic of the warm 2020 growing season. The wine finishes with bright acidity that is typical of Sangiovese. (Monica Larner)

Made with a special selection of Sangiovese, the 2020 Fontalloro is generous and rich, and the wine sports medium-dark color and concentration. The winemaking team has succeeded in bringing out an especially elegant side to this vintage. The wine offers pronounced notes of cherry and wild plum with delicate spice at the back. Like the other wines in this portfolio, there is a pretty mineral note that makes for a consistent through-line in all these new releases. (Monica Larner)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2023
A vibrant red, with fleeting aromas of lavender and wild rosemary mingling with cherry, orange peel, earth, mineral and tobacco flavors. On the elegant side, despite its youthful power, with excellent harmony, refined tannins and a long, complex aftertaste. Sangiovese. Best from 2026 through 2045. 3,800 cases made, 1,200 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Very refined and complex nose with a hint of pine cones, botanicals and dark mushrooms to the zesty oranges, mineral, fine musk and plums. Juicy, dry but textured on the palate with stacks of dusty tannins growing on the savory, full-bodied palate. Long and quite mineral in the finish. Better from 2025. (Zekun Shuai)

A dark, brooding 2018, with accents of smoke, vanilla, iron and tar surrounding a core of cherry and plum flavors. Reveals balsamic elements of eucalyptus and wild herbs on the lingering finish. On the austere side now, with a core of fruit and mineral. Best from 2025 through 2043. 150 cases made, 150 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022
The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille keeps me coming back to the glass again and again to take in its spicy yet also wonderfully lifted bouquet, as shavings of cedar and pine evolve to reveal mentholated herbs, flinty stone and dried black cherries. This is deeply textural, soothing with its combination of ripe red fruits and juicy acidity, as sweet spices and mint nuances resonate toward the close. The Sugarille doesn’t miss a beat, tapering off with impeccable balance and regal structure, while allowing remnants of ripe wild berries and plum to linger on and on. The Gaja family has really outdone themselves in this idiosyncratic vintage. (Eric Guido)

Black cherries with summer black truffles and dark wood on the nose. A medium-to full-bodied red with medium, round tannins and lovely fruit. It firm and flavorful. Drink now, but can age nicely.

San Felice’s 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Grigio da San Felice offers lovely brightness and energy. Fresh red fruit, spice, wild flowers and mint give this mid-weight Riserva lovely aromatic presence to match its understated personality. The 2018 is very nicely done.

Chocolate and top soil are first on the nose of this wine, before plums and a hint of eucalyptus emerge. The palate has more stony and metallic flavors of soil as well as denser fruit notes of macerated berries. There’s also herbal lift and the oily spritz of fresh orange peel. (Danielle Callegari)

The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino shows a pretty, mid-weight appearance with shiny dark ruby highlights. The wine offers soft fruit with cherry and wild forest berry at the front. On a second wave, it delivers light spice, earthy mineral and cured tobacco. Both the fruity and the savory sides of the wine are well balanced over solid tannic support and balanced freshness. Production is 29,000 bottles. (Monica Larner)

A succulent, solidly built red, with converging black cherry, blackberry, blueberry, violet and chalky, mineral flavors. This is packed with fruit that resonates through the lingering aftertaste. Meaty, sanguine aromas jump off the nose, backed up by sweeter notes of strawberries, cherries and cranberries and a last hint of fennel.
