The opulence of fruit and complexity of earth, meat, mushroom and cedar is breathtaking. It’s full-bodied, deep and powerful with so much intensity and depth. Chewy and layered, it goes on for minutes. Give it even more time. Try after 2023.
RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2020
The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna di Pianrosso Santa Caterina d’Oro is a fine and delicate wine that cleverly delivers the intensity of the vintage but without the heaviness or the ripeness. This wine holds back, just enough, to affirm its poised balance in terms of fruit richness, texture and tannic structure. It shows symmetry throughout. Dark cherry fruit, cassis, plum, lavender and campfire ash set the tone. The mouthfeel is thickly woven and generous, more so than the more linear and focused 2016 Brunello Pianrosso (that I preferred by a tiny margin). This special Riserva represents a 11,000-bottle production.

There’s a bright edge to this red, harnessing the cherry, strawberry, rosehip, mineral and tobacco flavors that build on the palate to a long finish. Displays terrific energy and balance, with an aftertaste that echoes both fruit and savory elements. Best from 2024 through 2050. 833 cases made, 450 cases imported.

Fragrant, full bodied and refined, this opens with aromas of new leather vanilla, baked plum and camphor. The palate shows an enviable combination of structure, finesse and length, doling out raspberry jam, ripe black cherry, vanilla and licorice enveloped in firm, refined tannins.

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is seductive, with its sweet spices and floral tones in a bouquet that gives way to dusty black cherry with grounding notes of worn leather and shaved cedar. Dark, ripe fruits, propelled by vibrant acids, and a mix of cooling minerals, savory spice, and fine tannins settle in. The finish is long and structured, with resonating acids, as ripe red fruits and sweet spices slowly fade under an air of pretty red florals. This is a gorgeous expression that can be enjoyed now but will also perform beautifully over the medium term in the cellar. A wonderful mix of ripeness and structure.

Sweet berries and dried flowers with cedar and hints of cigar box. Medium-to full-bodied with firm, creamy tannins and a fresh, vivid finish. A rather linear and polished 2015. Structured. Better after 2022, but already beautiful.

The rose is dark and rich, showing ripe black cherry and sweet herbs, with notes of tobacco, hints of mocha, and brown spice. On the palate, soft textures give way to sweet red fruits, showing wonderful purity and finesse, which was completely unexpected following the powerful bouquet that greeted me, as the 2015 Sesti becomes even more savory in the glass. The finish is long, energetic yet clean, with brisk acids making the mouth water, and remnants of red berry fruit and inner florals echoing throughout. The longer I spend with the glass, the more I like it. (Eric Guido)

The Sesti 2015 Brunello di Montalcino offers rich texture and shapely fruit flavors with plenty of forest berry, cherry, spice and potting soil. This Brunello opens to a very smooth, almost glossy texture with tannins that have already integrated at the five-year point following the harvest. That aged smoothness and silkiness gives this wine immediate appeal. The oak feels well integrated within the more opulent texture of the fruit. Some 180,100 bottles were released, but only 360 cases were shipped to the United States. (Monica Larner)

Cherry, berry, mineral and tobacco flavors hold court in this well-defined red. Borders on racy, courtesy of the vivid acidity, with well-mannered tannins running underneath. Shows terrific balance and complexity, featuring a long, savory aftertaste. Best from 2022 through 2039. 200 cases imported.

Aromas of grilled herb, graphite and wild berry take center stage along with whiffs of rose and exotic spice. On the full-bodied polished palate, fine-grained tannins lithely frame red cherry, pomegranate, coffee bean and orange zest while fresh acidity keeps it bright. Drink 2022–2027.

From one of Montalcino’s under-the-radar gems, this is a fantastic effort for the hot vintage, opening with classic varietal aromas of underbrush, leather, wild berry and a balsamic whiff of camphor. Smooth, full bodied and enveloping, the delicious palate combines finesse, great fruit and balance, doling out crushed raspberry, cherry compote, licorice and baking spice. It’s already almost accessible but offers years of drinking pleasure. Drink 2021–2030.

A lush, mouthfilling style, featuring cherry, strawberry and rose flavors, accented by balsamic notes of juniper, rosemary and thyme. Dense tannins gird the finish, yet this feels balanced overall and built to age. Best from 2023 through 2040. 75 cases made.
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, September 20, 2020
This has a beautiful, burnt, lightly mossy character to it, reminiscent of caramelized oranges and billiard table. Behind that are the Brunello hallmarks — glazed cherries and dried red plums. The ripe citrus and red fruit is deeply set on the full-bodied palate, anchored to layers of grippy tannins that keep this savory and mouthwatering through the medium-long finish. Drink from 2024.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2020
The Armilla 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows a ripe and fruit-forward bouquet. This wine makes you aware of the sunny and warm conditions of the vintage, thanks to its soft layers and rich fruit tones of dried cherry and plum. However, in classic Brunello fashion, the wine also offers medicinal, earthy and spicy notes that add to the complexity and general depth of the finished product. You get the sophistication of Brunello with the good cheer and exuberance of the vintage. The tannins show a firm bite that holds the mouthfeel tightly together. Fruit comes from a two-hectare property positioned some 300 meters above sea level with calcareous, siliceous and arenaceous soils that are rich in mineral content. The soils are embedded with layers of sand for easy water drainage. Armilla corked some 9,000 bottles of this wine in June 2019, and it hit the market in January 2020.

Lots of blackberry pie, vanilla, cedar, blackcurrants, dried lemon peel, blueberries and meatier elements that lurk beneath the very fine notes of blue fruit. Very layered with grippy tannins, which fall into just the right degree of ripeness. The tannins run around the full body that is brought to life by the acidity that pierces right through to the long finish. Drink in 2022.

The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Picchio opens to dark density and an inky appearance. The bouquet delivers thick fruit aromas of dried blackberry, prune and plum. You taste the heat and the sunny nature of the vintage, thanks to all that abundant and exuberant fruit. This blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% other red grapes (aged in oak for 12 months) is linear and austere in terms of palate with firm tannins and a sharp, mid-weight delivery. Some 25,000 bottles were made.

This full-bodied red starts off with aromas of leather, forest floor and camphor. Enveloping and structured, the palate shows a weightless concentration, featuring dried cherry, licorice, tobacco and a hint of orange zest framed in velvety tannins. Drink 2024–2029.

The Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso shows nice balance and elegance, and it definitely shows the deft hand of the winemaking team in what was not an easy vintage by any stretch. This pretty wine delivers lots of fresh cherry and wild rose, with ferrous earthy, licorice and grilled herb; I also get bay leaf and rosemary sprig. Like the annata 2017 Brunello produced by this estate, the single-vineyard Brunello Pianrosso is distinguished by a sweet cherry note (plus a hefty 15% alcohol) that accompanies the wine from start to finish. Production is 37,000 bottles.
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 4, 2021
This is a beautifully crafted and polished Brunello for this vintage, with full body and creamy, lightly chewy tannins. Dark berries, walnuts and cedar with dried-flower undertones. Needs time to soften, but very pretty. Drink after 2024.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021
A nuanced, delicate bouquet of dried strawberries, roses, hints of sweet spice and crushed rocks lifts up from the charming 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso. This is remarkably lifted, yet juicy and energetic, as ripe red berries and minerals cascade across the palate. It leaves a coating of violet-tinged florals, along with persistent raspberry and cherry tones. The tannin management here is absolutely stunning, as the Pianrosso finishes structured yet vividly fresh.

Roasted herbs, walnuts, olives, dried cherries and balsamic on the nose with a touch of leather and sage. It’s full-bodied with firm, finely-knit tannins. Creamy and so well integrated with depth and class. Try after 2024. (James Suckling)
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Mar 2023
The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino turns out beautiful results if you choose to drink the wine now, or if you opt to age it a little longer. It offers immediate intensity and complexity with a prelude of red and purple berry fruits that follow to tarry spice, campfire ash, licorice and rusty nail. Those savoy tones are well measured against the wine’s elegant, mid-weight finish. And the tannins are integrated seamlessly. The winemaking team has worked well in a challenging vintage. This is a large production of 80,000 bottles. (Monica Larner)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2023
Dense and brooding, revealing plum, cherry, earth, menthol and tobacco flavors. On the austere side today, with buried fruit and dominant tannins, yet this has fine equilibrium and extended length. Best from 2026 through 2043. 4,833 cases made, 2,383 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2022
The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is dark and brooding, taking its time to blow off a whiff of mocha before opening up with a mix of dried red fruits, cloves and rosemary. This is surprisingly pure and lifted in style while maintaining elegance, as ripe red and black fruits cascade across a core of vibrant acidity. The 2018 leaves the palate buzzing with residual tension, as fine-grained tannins penetrate deeply, and hints of tart wild berry and a dusting of cocoa slowly fade. (Eric Guido)

Generous, layered and rich, the Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona 2017 Brunello di Montalcino shows the generous fruit and deep layering that identifies this vintage. It also delivers a powerful 15% alcohol. This edition (with 69,000 bottles made) shows a bright note of sweet cherry that features strongly both on the bouquet and the palate. The wine shows lots of soft fruit with almond, spice and wild rose. From a hot and dry vintage, this Brunello is probably best suited to a near or medium-term drinking window. (Monica Larner)

Opening slowly in the glass, the 2021 Rosso di Montalcino wafts up with savory herbal tones, wild strawberry and cedary spice. This is soothingly soft and round on the palate with a pleasant inner sweetness and crisp red and black fruits that cascade throughout. Brisk acidity and sour citrus hints add harmony throughout the long and spicy finale, as the 2021 leaves nuanced tannins framing the experience perfectly. This lovely Rosso from Ciacci Piccolomini will win many hearts. (Eric Guido)
