Castello di Querceto Il Picchio Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2012 / 750 ml.

Item#: 85105

SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2016
An opulent style, featuring lush black cherry, blackberry and plum fruit shaded by licorice, tobacco and spice flavors. Powerful and succulent, with a well-integrated structure and a long earth- and spice-tinged aftertaste. Best from 2017 through 2024. 1,000 cases made.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2015
This wine was upgraded from Riserva status to Gran Selezione with the recent changes to the denomination. The 2012 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Picchio opens to a rich and beautifully saturated appearance. This is a plush, rich, and modern wine with a seamless presentation of dark fruit aromas that are comfortably set against exotic spice and tobacco. There is a bit of tightness and sour cherry on the close that should flesh out with a few more years of bottle aging. The wine is composed of 95% Sangiovese with 5% Canaiolo.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2015
Aromas of ripe plum, scorched earth, dark baking spice, toast and a hint of leather open up in the glass. The ripe palate delivers ripe black cherry, grilled herb, pipe tobacco and a coffee note. Velvety tannins hold up the savory flavors.

Where It's From

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

View more wines from Italy

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

This finds good equilibrium between the ripe berry, cherry, tobacco, iron and tea notes. Firm and chewy, with hints of leather and underbrush on the long aftertaste. Best from 2021 through 2035. 1,250 cases made, 200 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Firm and dense, this red sports cherry, leather, cigar box and sweet spice flavors. A juiciness midpalate adds depth. Finishes with tannins and a combination of earth, mineral and tobacco notes. Best from 2022 through 2038. 1,000 cases made, 400 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

An extremely dense and complex red with dried berry, cherry, floral and spice. Full body, powerful with a wealth of fruit and chewy tannins. This really is intense and beautiful. Goes on for minutes. Big wine. Drink in 2021.

Showing a dark color and appearance, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a beautiful wine. The 2012 vintages deliver some great surprises, like the ones you get here. The wine is dark and powerful with full throttle aromas of black cherry and blackberry. Spice, leather and balsam herb appear at the back. It sports firm tannins and a robust structure that will carry it forward over its aging years.
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2018
Tobacco, baked plum, dark spice and new leather aromas mingle with a truffle note on this earthy savory red. The aromas follow over to the taut medium-bodied palate along with fleshy black cherry and star anise. Chewy tannins provide the framework. Drink 2019–2027.

Bright red. Spicy red berries, camphor, black pepper and balsamic oils on the enticing nose. Clean, fresh and very flinty, offering red and black fruit flavors that are nicely supported by youthfully chewy rising tannins. The finish is long, clean, fresh and nervous, but this Brunello’s oaky backbone currently overwhelms its fruit. Which one of the two contestants (oak vs. fruit) will win the battle? I am not sure I have the answer. Pertimali only makes the Brunello Riserva when they are convinced the wine might become exceptional (the 1999, 2006, 2007, and 2010 were the most recent vintages of the Riserva prior to this one) and is made with a super-selection of grapes picked directly in the vineyard to make the Riserva (the grapes tend to be harvested as late as possible but without risking overripeness). The wine is aged in large oak barrels for at least four or four-and-a-half years, then lies another year or 18 months in bottle.

Wonderful aromas of blueberries and minerals follow through to a full body, polished tannins, blueberry flavors and light vanilla undertones. Fresh finish. Serious wine. Beautiful and from a top single vineyard. Drink now.

Black cherry, plum, spice, leather and earth flavors mark this complex red. Tobacco and earth notes chime in as this plays out on the long, balanced finish. Exhibits fine harmony and expression. Best from 2018 through 2025. 1,000 cases made.

Lots of blackberry pie, vanilla, cedar, blackcurrants, dried lemon peel, blueberries and meatier elements that lurk beneath the very fine notes of blue fruit. Very layered with grippy tannins, which fall into just the right degree of ripeness. The tannins run around the full body that is brought to life by the acidity that pierces right through to the long finish. Drink in 2022.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2018
The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Picchio opens to dark density and an inky appearance. The bouquet delivers thick fruit aromas of dried blackberry, prune and plum. You taste the heat and the sunny nature of the vintage, thanks to all that abundant and exuberant fruit. This blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% other red grapes (aged in oak for 12 months) is linear and austere in terms of palate with firm tannins and a sharp, mid-weight delivery. Some 25,000 bottles were made.
