Carpineto Chianti Classico Riserva 2017 / 750 ml.

Item#: 73726

SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2021
Smoky blackberry, rosemary and tar flavors predominate in this burly red, with dense, assertive tannins. This could use a little more generosity midpalate to buffer the tannins, yet persists on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2037. 16,000 cases made, 7,200 cases imported.

Where It's From

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Country / Italy

View more wines from Italy

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Balsam herbs, cocoa and sweet white smoke give way to crushed black cherry and plum as the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino blossoms in the glass. This is elegance personified, silky, deep and round, yet delivering a core of saline-minerality that creates a savory sensation—umami, in a way—with masses of ripe red fruits and confectionary spices to contrast. The tannins are sweet and round, presenting a chiseled structure; yet it’s not forceful. This tapers off with a tart twang of sour wild berries under an air of lavender and violets. Wow; there is so much concentration and depth here, but also balance. In fact, there’s hardly a sign of this being from a difficult vintage. While I expect it will have a shorter life than an Uccelliera Brunello from a classic year, the 2017 should not be missed. (Eric Guido)

The Uccelliera 2017 Brunello di Montalcino does a great job showcasing that extra power and brawn of the vintage and the richer textural structure of the southern side of the appellation. The bouquet is up front and beautifully measured with lots of red and purple fruit definition followed by spice, tar and earthiness. What sets this wine apart in this hot and dry vintage is the mouthfeel. It delivers fiber, flesh and soft tannins. The alcohol is a bit much at 15% in this production of 28,666 bottles. A solid 2017, but there’s tangy freshness to this, and relatively fine tannins that frame the wine nicely. Plenty of ripe fruit. Some fresh mushroom, too. Drink after 2023.
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2022
Cherry and plum fruit flavors are allied to mint, camphor and spice flavors in this dense, powerful red, which is lively and resonates on the finish with echoes of fruit, herbs and spices. Best from 2025 through 2042. 2,388 cases made, 1,200 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Firmly rooted in Tuscany, with telltale wild herb, earth, iron, tobacco and sanguine notes accenting the core of black cherry flavors. Firm tannins add structure. Stays fresh through the finish. Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo. Best from 2020 through 2025. 1,400 cases made, 600 cases imported.

A juicy, black cherry-laced red, displaying fine concentration, balance and freshness. Dusty tannins gather on the finish, as do accents of oak spice. Shows fine harmony and complexity overall, though will benefit from a year or two of bottle age. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2023 through 2038. 1,500 cases made, 175 cases imported.
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, July 1, 2020
A polished red with plum, chocolate and walnut aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with soft, integrated tannins and a pretty finish. Another year or two will give it a little more finesse. From organically grown grapes. Try after 2021.

Aromas of blood, iron and raw beef lead off, followed by flavors of cherry, plum and leather. Rich and harmonious, with a dense underlying structure and terrific length. Approachable now, but this should evolve well over the next few decades. Drink now through 2040. 3,500 cases made, 2,800 cases imported.
JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 7, 2019
Lots of dried peppers here, as well as earth, dried plums and spices. Firm and tangy on the medium-bodied palate, but quite succulent on the finish. Lemon-zest aftertaste. Drink now.

A nose of pencil shavings, cherries, tar and stones gives way to a palate of cherries, strawberries, raspberries and chocolate, with a hint of licorice at the end. This wine has grippy tannins, punchy acid and warming heat on the back palate. (Danielle Callegari)
RP8686 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Feb 2023
This is a popular value buy made with 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Carpineto 2020 Dogajolo seeks to bring out the sunshine and friendly nature of Tuscany. The wine is approachable and immediate with easy layers of dried cherry, earth and Mediterranean herbs. 800,000 bottles were made. (Monica Larner)

A rich, harmonious red, displaying cherry, raspberry, iron, leather and earth aromas and flavors, with a hint of caraway. Sleek and succulent, shows a well-integrated structure and a flight-to-Mars-and-back finish. Best from 2024 through 2046. 600 cases made, 300 cases imported.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2020
The 2015 Carpineto Brunello di Montalcino Riserva mixes rich plum sauce and brown spice with lifting notes of wild herbs and white smoke. There’s an earthy, flowery undergrowth component that comes forward with time and really completes the expression. It’s deeply textural with a salty, savory persona, as flavors of cherry sauce and sage give way to baker’s chocolate and hints of tobacco. The finish is structured yet maintains balance, coming across as youthfully tannic but also clean and fresh. There’s a bit of a rustic feel here, yet it only serves to further accentuate the experience.

Silky and elegant, revealing cherry, plum, tobacco, earth and iron flavors. The vibrant structure keeps this red pulsing through the long, mineral-infused finish. Shows fine balance and complexity. Best from 2023 through 2042. 3,000 cases made, 1,250 cases imported.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020
Carpineto’s 2015 Brunello di Montalcino rises from the glass with an intense display of orange-tinged strawberry, cedar box, a dusting of spice, animal musk, and dark earth tones. On the palate, velvety textures are contrasted by vibrant acidity, giving lift to its tart red and black berry fruit, as a host of sweet and savory spice develop, and fine tannins slowly mount. It finishes firm yet refined, with cool-toned red berry lingering over saline-minerals and a coating of dry tannins.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Oct 2020
Carpineto is a dynamic estate with property in Chianti Classico and Montepulciano in addition to Montalcino, where the fruit is grown on a dry-farmed outcropping at over 500 meters in elevation, sloping gently northward. It is one of the coolest climates in Montalcino, and in fact, it is one of the last vineyards to be picked. Their 2015 Brunello di Montalcino opens to fresh berry aromas with forest floor, wild cherry and cassis, with a good amount of the proverbial red fruit energy in this wine to keep it lively and vivid. Subtle layers of spice and smoke are intermingled at the back. It’s a nice Brunello for a sirloin and mushrooms. Some 30,000 bottles were made.
