Where It's From

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Country / Italy

View more wines from Italy

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

A jeweled red color, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino La Cerbaiola is wonderfully detailed on the nose with aromas of ripe cherries, cedar, dried roses, fresh leather, and mint. It carries beautifully onto the palate, with a medium to full-bodied frame and ripe tannins woven together with warming spice and fresh acidity. Everything you hope for, with lovely purity and fantastic length, this superb offering from Salvioni is complete and a benchmark wine for the vintage. Drink 2027–2050. 9900 bottles produced. The 2019 Chianti Classico offers an attractively spicy bouquet, with anise, tomato leaf, and dried cherry. Approachable and juicy, it is medium-bodied and offers round raspberry and cherry fruit, ripe tannins, and a lift of fresh acidity and notes of cedar on the finish. Drink 2023–2030. (Audrey Frick)

A rich magenta hue, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Poggio Al Granchio is a serious wine that amplifies things further and will need some decanting if opening now. Forward with great aromas of graphite, black cherry liqueur, cracked pepper, sage, and porcini, it’s full-bodied yet weightless on the palate and has phenomenal concentration while remaining elegant all the way through, it offers plush, velvety tannins and mineral undercurrents while retaining wonderful purity and a seamless texture. This stunning wine deserves several years in cellar. Drink 2026–2046. (Audrey Frick)
SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2024
A deep well of blackberry, black currant and cherry fruit marks this succulent red, with accents of wild rosemary and mineral. Well-delineated and complex, echoing the fruit and savory notes on the long finish. Shows superb balance and harmony. Best from 2027 through 2043. 1,083 cases made, 103 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2023
The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Granchio pulls the taster close to the glass to take in its beguiling aromatics. Rose and clove aromas give way to cinnamon-dusted red currants and a lifting hint of camphor. It’s elegant in style with silken textural depths and ripe wild berry fruits that saturate, all balanced by a stream of brisk acidity. Saline minerals stain the palate as the 2019 finishes long and structured. It holds its power in reserve as a pleasantly bitter tinge mingles with fine-grained tannins to create a youthfully tense sensation. This is a Poggio al Granchio for the ages. Bury your bottles deep. (Eric Guido)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Dec 2023
From a site with schistic galestro clay soils, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Granchio is definitely the most complete and complex of these new releases from 2019 by Val di Suga. Fruit comes from an 18-hectare vineyard located at 430 to 450 meters in elevation. The wine offers more oozing richness and concentration in line with the character of the vintage with sweet cherry, blackberry, toasted cumin seed and pressed rose. This estate does a good job of maintaining the freshness of Sangiovese. Some 12,000 bottles were made. (Monica Larner)

Vibrant acidity and refined tannins seep into the fabric of this round red, which is laced with cherry, raspberry and floral aromas and flavors. Mineral and underbrush accents add depth as this plays out on the long, dusty finish. Best from 2026 through 2043. 8,300 cases made, 2,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2023
The 2019 Brurello di Montalcino Ugolforte opens with a minty freshness as flint stone and dusty rose give way to crushed cherries. Silky and pliant, this possesses an elegance not often seen, with violet and lavender tones accentuating its polished red and blue fruits. This tapers off with sweet tannins balanced by an orange hint. A structured yet mouth-watering sensation lingers on. What a beauty this is. (Eric Guido)
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/28/2024
From the sister property of Poggio di Sotto, San Giorgio Ugolforte’s 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino takes a youthful ruby hue and is a riper style of Brunello, with rounded aromas of black raspberries, candied violets, sweet cedar, and fresh Mediterranean herbs. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with ripe tannins and retains good freshness through its long finish. A lovely Brunello with a more rounded and approachable feel, it’s going to show at its best over the coming 12–15 years. (Audrey Frick)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Dec 2023
There is deep black fruit and black plum on the San Giorgio 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Ugolforte. although it takes a little patience to get there. The wine is restrained or closed initially, and it’s hard to draw anything out for the first 15 minutes or so after the bottle is opened. Once it gets going, you are treated to sweet cherry, redwood, almond biscotti and dried rose potpourri. It ages in large Slavonian oak casks. (Monica Larner)

Extremely perfumed and fresh with an elegant and attractive nose. Medium-bodied with ultra-fine, delicate tannins and a delicious finish. So delicious. Drink now.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2023
Wild herbs, black cherries and exotic spices create a wildly inviting bouquet as the 2019 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano opens in the glass. This is undeniably silky and elegant on the palate. Fleshy red fruits are neatly framed by bright acids, as balsam and mocha notes form toward the close. The 2019 leaves a gentle staining of fine tannins to linger, along with a sour citrus hint that adds contrast. This is simply a pleasure today but has short-term cellaring potential. (Eric Guido)

Extremely perfumed and intense with lilacs, violets, purple fruits and black cherries. Full-bodied and very structured with punchy tannins that give this great length and intensity. This is a great one for the cellar. Try after 2027. (James Suckling)
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2023
The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille is dark and youthfully inward, forcing the taster to work with its brooding blend of blackberries, sage and crushed stone. This displays textures of pure silk, polished and refined, with a dense textural wave of tart red and black fruits underscored by saline minerals and exotic spice. Orange notes add contrast through the close as this finishes tannic and long, with a pleasantly chewy sensation and angular tannins that pinch the cheeks. The 2019 is a dark stallion of a Brunello, all muscle and meat, that will take many years of cellaring to show its best. That said, it will be worth the wait. (Eric Guido)

Cool and perfumed 2016 Brunello with black cherries, flowers and crushed stones. Medium to full body with firm, chewy tannins, yet polished and very silky. Mineral and seaweed undertones. Just a hint of bitterness. Drink after 2023.
RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2020
This wine represents a selection of fruit from vineyards near the property’s postcard-perfect Castello, and it’s often the most representative of the new releases presented each year by Castello Banfi. From a classic and balanced vintage, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura shows beautiful depth and balance with dark fruit, cassis, dried cherry, licorice, balsam herb and earthy tones. The wine is symmetrical, tight and elegant with long, silky tannins. This is the full Banfi package.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2021
There’s a lot going on in this bone-dry yet complex red, whose cherry, strawberry and plum fruit meshes with iron, tobacco, wild thyme and Mediterranean pine flavors, while the dusty tannins exert their presence on the lingering finish. Think hearty stews or wild boar ragù. Best from 2025 through 2043. 160 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/4/2021
The 2016 Poggio alle Mura Brunello di Montalcino was aged for two years in 40% large French oak casks and 60% in French oak barriques. It offers concentrated aromatics of confected black cherry, vanilla, tobacco, and tar, and the palate is full of grounding structure and flavors of unsweetened black licorice, cherry pit, and fresh Mediterranean herbs. This will warrant time in the cellar to mature, over the next 15 to 20 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2020
The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura from Banfi impresses with a dark, savory and exotic display, with woodland berries, sage, ashen soil tones and hints of tobacco. There are depths of silky textures here, lifted by cooling minerality and hints of mint. Its red and black fruits are polished, as this shows wonderful symmetry and poise, with flavors of licorice, dark chocolate and purple-tinged florals toward the close. You can feel its youthful structure, but there are plenty of primary components here to balance them out. Very nice.

Really fresh and vivid with sliced lemon and apple heading into cherry and floral undertones. It’s medium- to full-bodied with fine tannins and a vivid and bright finish. This is so drinkable and pretty for the hot and dry 2017 vintage, which produced many heavy Brunellos. Drink now or hold.
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2022
This red is defined by the strawberry, cherry and floral aromas and flavors, graced by notes of tar, tobacco, eucalyptus and wild herbs. Firm and unforgiving on the finish for now, yet stays persistent and lively through the long aftertaste. Best from 2025 through 2042. 37,500 cases made, 4,600 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Feb 2022
The Castello Banfi 2017 Brunello di Montalcino relies on fruit freshness and varietal purity to show a classic side of this hot and dry vintage. The wine remains elegant and bright throughout with plenty of primary fruit, cherry and dried raspberry. It shows a clean, linear style with rosemary, blue flower and some green olive or wild fennel. This is a handy, near-term drinking wine with a hefty 15% alcohol that can be absorbed with a hearty pasta or lasagna. Production is impressive with 450,000 bottles. (Monica Larner)
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2022
Subtle aromas of scorched earth, forest floor and mature berries mingle with a eucalyptus note. The full-bodied palate features cherry marinated in spirits, prune, roasted coffee bean and licorice framed in close-grained tannins. You’ll also notice the warmth of alcohol on the close. RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Mar 2023
Now in its proverbial third leaf (or the third vintage made), the Castello Banfi 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Marrucheto is a wine of rich concentration and dark fruit nuances. The bouquet is tight and powerful with all kinds of black cherry and wild currant aromas. The balance is good and so is the intensity of the primary fruit. Only the strong 15% alcohol content is out of place. This is a solid Brunello that will appeal to those who love the richer and more saturated side of Sangiovese. There is some sour cherry on the close, and the tannins would benefit from a few more years in the bottle. Production is exactly 13,325 bottles. (Monica Larner)
JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/6/2023
Moving to a more serious and grounding wine, the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino Vigna Marrucheto is ripe with balsamic, toasted herbs, sassafras, and black cherry. It is full without being heavy and has meaty cherry black and plum pit, as well as toasted cedar and forest floor. This is another firmly structured wine with more tannin than acid lift.
