Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2013 / 750 ml.

Item#: 89951

SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 15, 2019
Aromas of juniper, rosemary, thyme and Szechuan peppercorn segue to strawberry, cherry and rose hip flavors in this elegant red. Intense and balanced, with the structure to develop over the next two decades. Shows excellent depth and length. Best from 2022 through 2043. 833 cases made, 500 cases imported.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2019
Compared to 2014, the 2013 vintage was a breeze from a farming and winemaking point of view. A relatively stress free growing season tends to transmit more clarity and intensity to the finished product. That’s the impression I get when I taste the savory, rich and sophisticated 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. Some 10,000 bottles were released. This wine delivers thick ripeness with bold cherry aromas that are folded into spice, leather and tangy black licorice. This wine achieves a higher level of aromatic intensity compared to the elegant Altesino 2014 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli (which I actually preferred at this tasting). However, my impression is that this riserva from 2013 will ultimately offer a more fruitful and interesting bottle evolution five to ten years from now.
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2019
Linear and made in a focused style, this fragrant red has aromas of camphor, rose, thyme and new leather. The racy palate offers sour cherry, star anise, menthol and wild herb set against taut fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. Drink 2023–2033.

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Wonderful aromas of blueberries and minerals follow through to a full body, polished tannins, blueberry flavors and light vanilla undertones. Fresh finish. Serious wine. Beautiful and from a top single vineyard. Drink now.

Black cherry, plum, spice, leather and earth flavors mark this complex red. Tobacco and earth notes chime in as this plays out on the long, balanced finish. Exhibits fine harmony and expression. Best from 2018 through 2025. 1,000 cases made.

The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is a dark and savory expression of Sangiovese from one of the most beautiful corners of Tuscany. This is a dark and velvety wine that is packed tight with black fruit flavors, spice and tobacco. It shows texture in the mouth and firm grip that reveals some astringency that still needs to be absorbed and softened with cellar aging.

Elegant, balanced and shows a nice mix of berry fruit, with savory underbrush and mineral elements. This is firm and fresh, with a lingering aftertaste on the salty side. Not imported into the U.S. Best from 2021 through 2033.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2018
Good medium red-ruby. Musky aromas of ripe red cherry, spicy dark plum, tobacco, cedar and menthol. Then lively and perfumed but tight on the palate, showing lovely energy and focus to the flavors of cherry, spices and cedar. Finishes long, clean and youthfully imploded, with a firm tannic spine and enough fruit to stand the test of time. Lovely classic Brunello.
WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2018
Enticing scents of exotic spice, iris, red berry and a whiff of eucalyptus mingle together. On the youthfully assertive palate, firm close-grained tannins and bright acidity frame sour cherry, pomegranate and white pepper. Drink after 2023.

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Feb 2018
Showing more oak definition, texture and overall fruity richness, the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne benefits from the concentration and complexity you get with old vines. The wine wraps thickly over the palate, imparting luscious aromas of dried cherry, exotic spice, pressed rose and scorched earth along the way. This is a wine for the cellar. The bouquet has a lot to give, but this will require some extra time. All the elements are there for an excellent aging future. Some 27,000 bottles were produced.
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 27, 2017
The nose is decadent but not overdone with plum liqueur, Christmas cake, cedar, Chinese spices, licorice, tea leaves, tar and hot stones. Full and very dense with mouth-coating tannins but also attractive fresh fruit, pretty acidity and a long finish. Rather chewy and needs time, but a beautiful follow-up to the 2012.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2018
Bright and bursting with cherry, currant and berry flavors, this also has a tannic edge, along with tobacco and leafy underbrush notes. The two camps need to reach some sort of détente before this really sings. Best from 2022 through 2035. 2,250 cases made.
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2018
Forest floor, toasted oak, dark spice, new leather and tobacco aromas fill the glass along with a whiff of eucalyptus. The firmly structured concentrated palate shows power and finesse, offering dried black cherry, star anise, coffee bean and grilled sage alongside fresh acidity and close-grained tannins. It’s still youthfully austere and will benefit with several more years spent in the cellar. Drink 2023–2033.

Bright red with a pale rim. Knockout aromas and flavors of spicy red cherry, licorice, cedar and aromatic herbs. Clean, ripe and round, with saline nuances lingering nicely on the smooth but very lively finish. A classic Brunello from Voliero.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Feb 2018
Sporting beautiful brightness and liveliness, the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino offers blackberry and cherry nuances enhanced by spice, leather and elegant balsam herb. These various characteristics reach a soothing sense of balance and delicate harmony that reflects the best assets of this undertone vintage.

Firm and dense, this red sports cherry, leather, cigar box and sweet spice flavors. A juiciness midpalate adds depth. Finishes with tannins and a combination of earth, mineral and tobacco notes. Best from 2022 through 2038. 1,000 cases made.
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, April 4, 2018
An extremely dense and complex red with dried berry, cherry, floral and spice. Full body, powerful with a wealth of fruit and chewy tannins. This really is intense and beautiful. Goes on for minutes. Big wine. Drink in 2021.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Feb 2018
Showing a dark color and appearance, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a beautiful wine. The 2012 vintages deliver some great surprises, like the ones you get here. The wine is dark and powerful with full throttle aromas of black cherry and blackberry. Spice, leather and balsam herb appear at the back. It sports firm tannins and a robust structure that will carry it forward over its aging years.
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2018
Tobacco, baked plum, dark spice and new leather aromas mingle with a truffle note on this earthy savory red. The aromas follow over to the taut medium-bodied palate along with fleshy black cherry and star anise. Chewy tannins provide the framework. Drink 2019–2027.
VN92+92+ pts. - Vinous - Apr 2018
Bright red. Spicy red berries, camphor, black pepper and balsamic oils on the enticing nose. Clean, fresh and very flinty, offering red and black fruit flavors that are nicely supported by youthfully chewy rising tannins. The finish is long, clean, fresh and nervous, but this Brunello’s oaky backbone currently overwhelms its fruit. Which one of the two contestants (oak vs. fruit) will win the battle? I am not sure I have the answer. Pertimali only makes the Brunello Riserva when they are convinced the wine might become exceptional (the 1999, 2006, 2007, and 2010 were the most recent vintages of the Riserva prior to this one) and is made with a super-selection of grapes picked directly in the vineyard to make the Riserva (the grapes tend to be harvested as late as possible but without risking overripeness). The wine is aged in large oak barrels for at least four or four-and-a-half years, then lies another year or 18 months in bottle.

A concentrated bead of blackberries and minerals pervades the nose and palate. Medium-to full-bodied with well-integrated tannins and a balanced finish. Tight and very focused. Classic Brunello for the vintage. Best from 2023.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Feb 2022
The Altesino 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is ripe and round with lots of pretty textural richness and juicy fruit flavors. These qualities tie in nicely with the character of the vintage that saw long and hot summer days. Dark fruit, plum and blackcurrant pave the way for savory spice, tobacco and limestone. The effect is soothing and rich, and the wine remains perfumed and silky to the end. The tannins are well managed in this hot-vintage wine. Fruit is sourced over 25 hectares of vines with tufo soils and alberese rock. Production is 110,000 bottles. (Monica Larner)

Blackberry, black cherry, iron and loam aromas and flavors are the highlights of this firmly-structured red. Fresh, picking up rosemary and oak spice accents on the finish. Best from 2025 through 2042. 11,600 cases made, 3,500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2021
The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino holds your attention with its sweetly seductive mix of wild strawberries, stems and all, dusty dried flowers and hints of gingery spice. This is pleasantly ripe in style yet balanced throughout, with cherries and cloves offset by a hint of candied citrus and bright acids that create a jovial impression. Its tannins are round, complemented by notes of licorice and hard red candies, as this finishes lightly structured and long. Altesino firmly believes in blending vineyards throughout Montalcino to create the most balanced Brunello from each vintage. In 2017 that approach sure paid off. (Eric Guido)
