When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Extremely floral and aromatic with violets and lavender throughout. Black olives, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, very fine-grained tannins that run the length of the wine. Goes on for minutes. A greenish undertone comes out at the end with some spearmint, green tea and green olive. About two-thirds merlot. Best after 2028, but already stunning.
The 2019 The Flight, the estate’s Merlot-based wine, is dark, powerful and brooding in demeanor, almost shockingly so. The natural concentration of a year with low yields and small berries is very much in evidence. A rush of black cherry, plum, graphite, lavender and blue/purplish fruit builds as this virile, explosive wine shows off its arresting beauty. In a word: impressive. (Antonio Galloni)
Leading off with the 2019 Flight, which is 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc, this has a beautiful perfume of red cherries, raspberries, and flowers. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it shows the finesse, elegance, and lively style favored at this estate today, with perfectly integrated tannins and both richness and freshness. I love its overall balance as well as length, and it will benefit from just a few years of bottle age and should have upwards of two decades of overall longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Based on Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the ruby/purple-hued 2019 Mountain Cuvee gives up a juicy, lively style reminiscent of Bordeaux with its red and black currants, tobacco leaf, and cedar aromas and flavors. With beautiful fruit, medium-bodied richness, and silky tannins, it’s an undeniably delicious red to enjoy over the coming decade or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Mountain Cuvée blends merlot and cabernet from two growers in the Mayacamas hills, not far from Gundlach Bundschu. It’s an herbal wine with woodsy notes of violets and plums, a touch of green bean in the tannins over sleek oak. For a braise.

A generous red, fruit-forward yet well-structured, offering cherry and red currant flavors accented by toasty oak and espresso. Drink now through 2028. 50,000 cases made. (Tim Fish)
