When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The 2022 Zinfandel Jackass Vineyard is powerful, dense and explosive, in the classic Martinelli style. Super-ripe dark cherry, cloves, leather, cedar and grown spices build effortlessly. This virile, somber Zinfandel packs a tremendous punch. It’s a gorgeous wine from the Martinelli family. (Antonio Galloni)

The exact proportions and origins of the 2020 Zinfandel Blend 8 Years in the Desert are deliberately kept fuzzy by the winery, but the wine does include Petite Sirah, Syrah and Barbera in addition to Zin. Aged in roughly half new oak, the nose brings an overlay of vanilla to a core of ripe blackberries. Full-bodied and open-knit, it adds briary, herbal notes on the palate, plus a bit of cracked pepper. Soft, dusty tannins mark the finish, along with hints of mocha and bittersweet chocolate. Drink it over the next several years. (Joe Czerwinski)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2022
A bold and brawny blend, offering straightforward dark berry and savory spice flavors. Ends with a peppery accent. Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Barbera. Drink now through 2030. 29,000 cases made. (Tim Fish)

A nicely focused version, with cassis and bitter plum puree supported by a graphite spine, which is well-buried in the fruit. A judicious apple wood frame lets the fruit play out, with a late hint of chaparral. Drink now through 2032. 28,681 cases made. (James Molesworth)
RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Palermo is assembled from vineyards in Pope Valley and Coombsville, among others, supplemented by bits of Merlot, Petite Sirah and Syrah. Subtle cedar notes accent cassis and cherries on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is supple and softly dusty in feel, then turns a bit tart and thins out on the finish, adding hints of bitter cocoa. RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 4th May 2023
There are almost 50,000 cases of the 2021 Zinfandel Blend 8 Years in the Desert, a mix of Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Grenache. Mixed raspberries, blackberries and blueberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, ripe and supple, yet with just enough softly dusty tannins, a velvety texture and no suggestion of raisined fruit. With its amiable nature and fresh, lingering finish, it should win lots of fans. (Joe Czerwinski)
SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 15, 2023
Gutsy and concentrated, with blackberry, smoky bacon and green peppercorn flavors that finish with broad-shouldered tannins. All power, no finesse. Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Grenache, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best after 2023. 46,000 cases made. (Tim Fish)

Even with an appreciable volume (11,300 cases), all of the 2021 Chardonnay Mannequin was barrel fermented and matured, spending eight months in 23% new French oak. Blended primarily from Santa Barbara and Sonoma sources (there is some Napa fruit, as well as 2.6% Viognier), it’s toasty on the nose, boasting notes of roasted cashew, grilled peaches and vanilla. It’s full-bodied, lush and easy to drink, with tropical fruit and pineapple on the finish. Enjoy it on the young side. (Joe Czerwinski)

The 2019 Machete Proprietary Red is a Petite Sirah-based blend, with additions of Syrah, Grenache, Zinfandel and Viognier. Sourced from Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino, it offers layers of bold blueberry fruit on both the nose and the full-bodied palate. Rich and concentrated, yet supple and long on the finish, with soft, dusty tannins and hints of cocoa, it’s a solid effort that manages to nicely conceal its stated 16.1% alcohol.

RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
While the exact blend of the 2020 Proprietary Red Abstract hasn’t been disclosed, winemaker Dave Phinney allows that he starts with Grenache and builds on that, usually with Syrah and Petite Sirah. The wine also includes some Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. The wine offers up scents of black cherries, accented by garrigue-like herbs and spice, including a hint of lavender. It’s full-bodied without being heavy, rather open-knit and easy to drink, with a long finish that’s both mouthwatering and gently dusty. I wouldn’t bet on cellaring it for a decade, but it’s delicious now, so why wait? (Joe Czerwinski)

This blend offers a potpourri of hearty aromas and flavors, with black raspberry and cherry flavors accented by smoked pepper, orange peel and black olive notes that finish with medium-grained tannins.
