This is a well-balanced red blend with a pleasant texture and vivacity of fruit. Find notes of raspberry, blueberry, boysenberry and lilacs on the nose with the palate opening further with complementary tones of toasted wood, nutmeg and a hint of anise. (Stacy Briscoe)

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Intensely stewed aromas of black plum, herb and toasted spices show on the nose of this ripe bottling. Thick tannins frame extracted black cherry and blackberry flavors, leading into a grapey finish. (Matt Kettmann)

The 2020 Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vineyard is a standout. Readers who want to understand why Monte Rosso is such a special site will find that here. Soaring aromatics, strikingly pure fruit and refined tannins are all signatures of a special place and a special wine. Red-fleshed fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and lifted floral overtones grace this racy, flamboyant Zinfandel-based wine. Dollops of Alicante Bouschet, Grand Noir and Tempranillo round out the field blend.

This has lots of horizontal tannins that provide fine muscle and form. It’s medium- to full-bodied with freshness and brightness. Red berries, crushed cloves and other spices. Grapey, for a better word. Sophisticated. Chewy, Needs time to soften. Zinfandel with petite sirah and carignan. Drinkable now, but better with two or three years of bottle age.
Deeply structured and showing simmering potency, this red reveals blackberry and currant flavors highlighted by savory dill and white pepper accents. Hands off this one for now. Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Carignane. Best from 2024 through 2032. 6,700 cases made. (Tim Fish)

Tasty, bright raspberry and blackberry flavors are coated with a buttery, oaky layer of cedar and toast that stands apart from the fruitiness. The wine is full-bodied and moderately tannic in texture. (Jim Gordon)
