Planeta Santa Cecilia 2018 / 750 ml.

Item#: 97576

VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2022
Brooding in the glass, the 2018 Santa Cecilia takes its time to develop its hauntingly alluring bouquet. Swirling unlocks depths of plum sauce and sage mixed with enriching notes of brown spice and, finally, a lifting hint of camphor. It boasts medium-bodied weight and the silkiest of textures, nearly glycerol in feel, as waves of ripe red and black fruits are offset by a twang of sour citrus that rings like a dinner bell amongst this sea of dark depths. Sweet tannins linger through the finale, leaving a classically dry nut only lightly structured sensation, as hints of licorice and inner rose fade. The 2018 Santa Cecilia, a varietal Nero d’Avola from Noto, is a huge success from a difficult vintage. Sometimes I struggle with a score for a wine that is atypical of the vintage, but plainly stated, the 2018 is a showstopper. (Eric Guido)

Welcome to the modern face of Sicily’s deep wine tradition. The bouquet of black plum with licorice and spice notes pulls you into this rich but beautifully balanced nero d’avola with velvety tannins that build gently through the long, polished finish. Drink or hold.

Fresh, loamy earth and sun-dried cherry and raspberry fruit flavors ride the silky palate of this focused, medium- to full-bodied red. Fresh acidity and an iron-laced streak of mineral provide focus and drive through the lightly chewy finish of herbs and spice. Nero d'Avola. Drink now through 2028. 3,650 cases made, 190 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

Aromas of blue flower, black-skinned berry and a whiff of new leather form the inviting nose. Smooth and juicy, the palate offers blackberry jam, ripe black cherry and a hint of baking spice alongside soft, supple tannins. It’s made to be enjoyed young, so drink soon.

A musky mix of plum, wet concrete and smoky sage wafts up from the 2018 Cerasuolo di Vittoria. It’s juicy and pure in style, focused on tasty wild berry fruits and mineral tones. Energy is maintained through nervous acidity, as a sour citrus hint resonates beneath an air of rosy inner florals. The 2018 doesn’t possess the depth I’ve come to expect here, yet it is still a very likable and balanced Cerasuolo di Vittoria. (Eric Guido)

Tons of red and black plums, plus delicate chocolate character make this full-bodied and silky nero d’avola very appealing. Quite some concentration, but in an undemonstrative form. Long, plush finish that I just want to sink into. Drink or hold.

On the nose this wine blooms with cherry blossoms and wild strawberries that pop up through gravel and soil. Cherries and berries are joined by rose petals and tea leaves for a tannic, crunchy-fruit palate outlined with chalky tannins and vibrant acidity. (Danielle Callegari)

The sweetly scented 2019 Chardonnay opens up with an alluring bouquet of dusty yellow florals, dried apricot, sage and hints of almond. It boasts oily, glycerol-like textures, lifted by stimulating acids, citrus-tinged orchard fruits and minerals. This is rich and savory with power in reserve, tapering off a bit tropical yet in perfect balance. A salty flourish keeps you coming back to the glass for more.

The 2021 Cerasuolo di Vittoria wafts up, more savory than sweet, with smokey earth tones and crushed rocks giving way to black raspberry. This washes across the palate with mineral-tinged red and blue berry fruits complicated by inner herbal tones. Brisk acidity maintains energy throughout as the 2021 tapers off with a salty flourish, leaving licorice and spice hints to linger. (Eric Guido)
