Westwood Sonoma County Pinot Noir 2019 / 750 ml.

The appellation 2019 Pinot Noir is brilliant, and I like it every bit as much as many of the more expensive single vineyards. Spiced red fruits, loamy earth, leather, and subtle smoke notes give way to a medium-bodied, textured, incredibly charming Pinot Noir that already offers pleasure yet has the balance to keep for at least 7–8 years. Where It's From
District / Sonoma County
View more wines from Sonoma County
Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.
Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.
Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Quite light in the glass, this bottling offers fresh, slightly tart aromas of strawberry and wet slate on the fun nose. The palate picks up more earthy tones of dust and leather, though that tart red-fruit element carries into the finish. (Matt Kettmann)

Medium ruby, the 2019 Pinot Noir Estate offers impressive aromatic layering and detail, evolving as it spends time in the glass from cranberry and burnt orange peel to violet, tea leaves, pipe tobacco and aniseed. The medium-bodied palate is tangy and ultra fresh, with a chalky frame and loads of citrus, earth and herbal touches fanning across the finish. It takes significant time to really open up, and I suspect it has more to give with another 2–3+ years in bottle. (Erin Brooks)
Opulent aromas of baked black cherry, star anise, cardamom and thyme make for a rich entry to the nose of this bottling. The palate, meanwhile, is framed with grippy, chalky tannins, giving a firm structure to the raspberry, cherry, dark herb and loamy earthy flavors. Drink through 2039. (Matt Kettmann)

The 2019 Pinot Noir The North Slope Vineyard offers lovely mid-palate depth to play off strong floral, savory notes. I find the North Slope a bit uncharacteristic in its vegetal character, which I suspect is related to machine harvesting for some of this fruit.

The Estate Vineyards
2019 / 750 ml.
The 2019 Pinot Noir The Estate Vineyards is bright, aromatic and wonderfully translucent. Always a great introduction to these wines, the Estate in 2019 is especially perfumed and nuanced. Crushed rose petal, mint and sweet red berry fruit are all finely cut. The 2019 is a bit more restrained than in most vintages, but the Russian River has also so much natural exuberance, so that contrast works so well here.

Reveals lightly mulled raspberry and cherry fruit flavors that move through slowly, with a hint of blood orange providing spine while singed sandalwood and red tea weave through the finish. Drink now through 2023. 4,442 cases made. (James Molesworth)
Sour cherry, dusty earth and toasted sage aromas kick off this countywide cuvée. There’s a ripe landing to the palate, where persistent strawberry flavors slowly dry up toward earth and herbs. (Matt Kettmann)

The 2019 Pinot Noir Ferrington is resinous with medicinal herbs, black cherry fruit, and beet root. The palate is full and rounded with forward fruit, leading into savory notes of raspberry seed, wooded spice, and red plum skin. More structured in style, allow for a year or two in bottle and drink over the following 15 or so years. (Audrey Frick)
Features expressive cherry and raspberry coulis flavors carried by very lively acidity. Judicious red licorice and floral notes gild the finish, letting the fruit play out nicely. Drink now through 2024. 282 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Proprietary Red Wine
2019 / 750 ml.
The 2019 Proprietary Red Wine Legend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Syrah, 8% Counoise, and the rest Grenache and Tannat, sourced from Sonoma County. This spicy, textured, herbal (although not green) effort has lots of red and black fruits, medium to full body, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It’s a character-filled, satisfying red to drink over the coming 7–8 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
