Where It's From

District / Cote de Beaune

View more wines from Cote de Beaune

Named after the city of Beaune, Cote de Beaune is home to some of the world's greatest Pinot Noirs (with Pinot Noir accounting for most of the district's production). The district makes up the Southern half of Burgundy's Cote d'Or. Top wines from here are classified as Grand Cru, while the next best group fall under the Premier Cru classification.

Region / Burgundy

View more wines from Burgundy

In eastern France lies the region of Burgundy, one of the legendary wine regions of the world. Burgundy, home to some of the most expensive wines in the world, is famous for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. With very few exceptions, red Burgundy is made from 100% Pinot Noir. And the reigning white of Burgundy, Chardonnay, can vary incredibly in style depending on where it was produced within the region.

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

The 2018 Marsannay Boivin is very fragrant and floral on the nose, where crushed violet and peony scents underlie the opulent black fruit. The palate is silky-smooth on the entry, one of Roty’s most polished Marsannay cuvées, with a slightly tarry, spicy finish. Great energy here. This should age well in bottle. Highly recommended.

The 2018 Aloxe-Corton Village comes from four parcels in the appellation. It has a backward nose that demands coaxing to reveal tertiary, almost gravelly scents entwined with the black fruit. The medium-bodied palate offers sweet, supple tannins. Elegant for an Aloxe-Corton, with a harmonious, lightly spiced finish. Enjoy over the next decade.

Blossoming in the glass with a lovely bouquet of raspberries, cherries, dried flowers and blood orange, the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village is medium to full-bodied, lively and precise, with fine-boned structuring tannins and succulent acids. As usual, it’s largely derived from the lieu-dit Beaux Bruns, part of which is only entitled to the communal appellation.
VN87+87–89 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from two climats, the majority from Les Beaux Bruns. This cru seemed to be missing some lift and energy on the nose, coming across rather static in the glass. The fleshy, ripe palate offers maraschino cherries, raspberry preserve and a touch of white pepper. Forward and willing to please, yet not a profound Chambolle-Musigny.

The 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with aromas of dark berry fruit, woodsmoke, plums, dark chocolate, licorice and spices. Full-bodied and layered, it’s deep and concentrated, with a muscular, introverted profile and a long, lively finish. This is a serious, structured Mazis from Roty, and it will take time to show all its cards.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020
The 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is well defined on the nose, featuring graphite-infused black fruit laced with aromas of Christmas cake and loam. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, slightly tarry black fruit and some vanilla-y new oak on the finish that will require several years to be fully subsumed. Very good length but patience required.

The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets exhibits attractive aromas of dark berries, spices, grilled squab and forest floor, followed by a medium to full-bodied, succulent and lively palate that’s concentrated and chalky, concluding with a long, mineral finish. Finishing up at 13.2% alcohol, this is an exquisitely balanced Caillerets that should offer a broad drinking window.
VN90+90–92 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru comes from a single plot of vines. It has a perfumed nose, the most mineral-driven of the four Volnays from Boillot and probably showing the best delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins that lend a sense of strictness and correctness. You just want it to manifest more joie-de-vivre toward the finish. Maybe it will lighten up in bottle.

Another fine cuvée is the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur Bas, a wine derived from the part of this lieux-dit classified at the communal level, where Roty observes his grapes are always especially thick skinned. Offering up aromas of cherries, raspberries, cassis and rose petals, framed by toast oak, it’s medium to full-bodied, concentrated and muscular, with the most depth and structure of Roty’s three lieux-dits.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur Bas is very well defined on the nose, suggesting a mixture of around two-thirds black and one-third red fruit, laced with orange peel and light pain d’épices aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, layered black cherry and boysenberry fruit and graphite and light fig notes. White pepper lingers toward the finish, which fans out nicely. Excellent.

SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2021
Fresh and focused, with a line of sinewy tannins underneath cherry, boysenberry and earth flavors. Firm, yet also on the elegant side, this red shows plenty of character. Best from 2024 through 2032. 100 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020
The 2018 Pommard Vieilles Vignes has a perfumed, quite floral bouquet with iris petals and a touch of rose infusing the mixture of red and black fruit, a little earthy in style. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry, fine structure and a tad more expressive than the Volnay at this precise time. Good length here with a tingle on the tongue after the wine has departed.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jan 2021
As usual, the 2018 Pommard Vieilles Vignes is a touch more muscular than the corresponding Volnay, but it’s no less refined this year, delivering aromas of plums, cherries and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety, nicely concentrated palate.
