Item#: 75149

SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2014
A flashy style, accented by spicy, toasty oak, this features a tight, dense mix of red and dark berry fruit at the core. Comes together on the finish, revealing sharply focused oak and berry details. Long and persistent. Drink now through 2022. 275 cases made.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2014
Made from Dijon clones 777 and 667, the 2011 Pinot Noir is a larger cuvée, coming across with fresher acidity and an even brighter style than the 2010. A successful effort for the vintage, it displays lots of plum, red fruits (especially currants and cherries), underbrush and loamy soil notes. Medium-bodied and juicy, it should drink well for 6–8 years.

Where It's From

District / Sonoma County

View more wines from Sonoma County

Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.

Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.

Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

Region / California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Composed of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc aged for 22 months in 100% new French oak, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Sage Ridge gives fragrant crème de cassis, spiced black cherries, preserved plums and lilacs with touches of chocolate box, wood smoke and tobacco plus a hint of crushed stones. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm and structured with great freshness and loads of layers. 150 cases produced.

Like the 2015, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is totally brilliant. Incorporating 10% Cabernet Franc and 5%% Merlot brought up in French oak, it boasts a deep, saturated purple color as well as crème de cassis, blackberry jam, scorched earth, chocolate, graphite and huge minerality. Deep, concentrated, full-bodied, and beautifully textured, it’s one sexy 2014 that has more density, depth and concentration than most in the vintage. It’s a rocking Cabernet to drink anytime over the coming 15–20+ years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2014 Pinot Noir Rita’s Crown is made from clones 115 and, to a lesser extent, 667. She only makes four barrels, but it is a gorgeous Pinot Noir with notes of forest floor, spring flowers, sweet black cherry and black raspberry fruit with loamy soil undertones. The wine is full-bodied and opulent with well-integrated acidity, wood and tannin. This beauty is reminiscent of a Grand Cru from the Côte de Nuit, and should drink well for another 10 years.

The 2012 Pinot Noir was fashioned from the Calera clone. Its deep, dark ruby hue is followed by notes of black fruits, earth and forest, beautiful opulence, decent acidity and ripe tannin. This is a lush, heady, hedonistically and intellectually satisfying, full-bodied Pinot Noir to drink over the next 7–8 years.

Coming from the Edcora Vineyard up on Atlas Peak and composed of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep garnet-purple color and expressive nose of cassis, blackberry tart, crushed blueberries and lavender with touches of bay leaves and fragrant soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a beautifully soft, fine-grained texture with plenty of freshness lifting the intense flavors, finishing long. Only 75 cases were made.

The 2012 Proprietary Red is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, aged in 100% new French oak from some of the best coopers in France, Darnajou, Taransaud, and Gamba. This wine is a stunner. A terrific nose of blackcurrants, cedar wood, white chocolate, and blackberries rolls out of the glass with serious intensity. Beautiful texture, remarkable purity, sweet, supple tannins, and layers of fruit and extract that are not heavy or out of balance all cascade over the palate. This is a stunning wine, and like so many 2012s, exuberant and showy already. It should continue to drink well for at least another 15 or more years. (Robert M. Parker, Jr.)

RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2015
The 2014 Sugarloaf Mountain Proprietary Red, which is a Merlot/Cabernet Franc blend, displays loads of forest floor, spring flowers, blueberry and black raspberry fruit and a touch of mulberry in a dense, opulent, fleshy, pure style. She seems to know how to get sweet tannin and lots of lushness in her wines, and this certainly fits that formula.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Oct 2016
Her 2014 Proprietary Red Sugarloaf Mountain is a blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in Darnajou, Taransaud and Gamba French cooperage. She makes 150 cases of this beauty, which has a fragrant nose of red and blackcurrants, licorice, incense and subtle background toast. The lush, full-bodied mouthfeel is texturally enticing with silky tannins, adequate acidity and extravagant fruit richness. This is a beauty to drink now and over the next 15–20 years.
