When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

I loved the 2021 Pinot Noir Estate, a rounded, medium-bodied, complex effort that has assorted sweet cherry and raspberry fruit, some spicy, herbal nuances, ripe tannins, and a lengthy finish. It’s not the most complex or layered Pinot Noir out there, but it sure is fun to drink. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Bright and racy pinot with fresh red berry, hibiscus and orange peel notes. Medium-bodied, juicy and tense, with lots of freshness driven by vivid acidity. Crunchy and sleek. Drink now. Screw cap. (James Suckling)

A rich ruby/purple, the 2021 Pinot Noir Land’s Edge Vineyards is ripe and rounded with a perfume of blackberry preserve, damp forest floor, and toasted baking spice. Full-bodied, but with clean lift and without weight, it has dark berries, candied flowers, sweet, ripe tannins, and a soft texture. This is an immediate wine, but it has good freshness and the structure to drink over the next 4–5 years. (Audrey Frick)

A plummy richness is backed by some raspberry snap in this full-bodied, focused and flavorful wine. Vivid black cherries, cloves and a touch of toasted oak give the wine plenty to savor. Best from 2025. (Jim Gordon)

Packs a mix of cherry and raspberry fruit flavors that show good energy, while a zip of anise and red tea adds cut on the finish. Drink now through 2024. 6,740 cases made. (James Molesworth)

VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2023
The 2021 Pinot Noir The South Slope Vineyard is a classic Steven Hansel wine. A rush of dark cherry, plum lavender, rose petal and licorice are all dialed up. This boisterous, exuberant Pinot Noir has a ton of character. Plush contours wrap it all together in style. The 2021 will be nearly impossible to resist on release. What a knock-out! (Antonio Galloni)
JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/27/2023
The 2021 Pinot Noir The South Slope Vineyard takes on a notably darker profile, and assuming its name is derived from the exposition of this vineyard, that comes as no surprise. Pouring a dark red/purple hue, in the glass it reveals more warmth and depth, with aromas of blackberry, pine sap, porcini, and violets. The palate is full-bodied, with more hearty richness, a meaty texture, and a rounded frame. With ripe tannins and a more grounded sensibility, it carries an earthier profile and retains a stamp of toastiness on the finish. Though I prefer the energy of the North Slope, this will certainly be a wine that Russian River Valley fans can embrace for a richer style. Drink 2024–2030. (Audrey Frick)

Deep and powerful fruits like black cherries and blueberries fill the aroma before tanginess chimes in on the palate along with blackberries, sour cherries and mint. It’s a complex, detailed wine, wonderful to drink soon and through 2030. (Jim Gordon)

Punchy cherry and pomegranate notes give this a juicy, almost crunchy edge, while anise and black tea accents skitter through on the finish. Drink now through 2026. 11,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Wet stone, tropical flowers and white melon aromas make for a compelling nose on this bottling of a widely available, downright cheap Chardonnay. The palate stays clean as well, with gardenia and stone fruit flavors working in tandem. (Matt Kettmann)
