When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Offers notes of plum preserves and cherry clafoutis that glide through, with sweet toast around the edges. The soft, easy finish lacks some form. Drink now. 9,356 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Juicy black cherry and boysenberry aromas are generous on the nose of this single vineyard expression, with waves of wet soil and crushed slate adding a mineral nuance. The lush palate of Luxardo cherry and a spice rack of flavors is wrapped in grippy tannins that elevate this wine to the upper echelon. (Matt Kettmann)

Another pretty, perfumed wine in the vintage, the 2021 Pinot Noir Sierra Mar Vineyard has ripe strawberry and framboise-like fruit as well as ample background spice and dried herb nuances, and it gains a darker, floral edge with time in the glass. Medium-bodied on the on the palate, with nicely integrated oak, velvety tannins, and just a round, supple mouthfeel, it’s drinking beautifully today and will be drinking beautifully in another 7–8 years as well. Ripe and with nice range, offering wood spice, incense, black and red tea and mulled plum and raspberry fruit notes that meld together through a lengthy finish. Reveals nice underlying freshness, too. Drink now through 2028. 617 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Medium ruby, the 2021 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast has an attractive floral perfume of candied roses, wild berries, lifted orange zest, and clove. On the palate, this medium-bodied red is fresh with notes of dusty earth, fresh pomegranate, and cherry, fine tannins, and a clean finish. Charming and refreshing now, it will remain enjoyable over the next 5–6 years. Drink 2023–2028. (Audrey Frick)

A piercing, fresh, high-pitched style, showing blood orange and damson plum notes liberally laced with savory and pine hints through the taut, tangy, mineral-accented finish. Drink now through 2028. 950 cases made. (James Molesworth)

The 2021 Pinot Noir Le Caprice pours a deep ruby and offers loads of spiced aromas of woodsy earth, cinnamon, and red cherry. Medium-bodied, with good concentration and ripe fruit that fills the palate with notes of red plum, baking spices, and pine, it’s a clean red with fine tannins, good richness, and purity, and its finish reveals a floral component of roses, ripe wild raspberry, and fresh herbs. Drink 2025–2037. (Audrey Frick)
RP95+95–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th Feb 2023
I tasted the 2021 Pinot Noir Le Caprice as a finished barrel sample a week before it was racked to tank and bottled. Made from destemmed grapes and matured in 40% to 50% new French oak, it has a medium ruby-purple in color and inviting scents of red cherry, cranberry sauce, cinnamon, rose petal and potpourri, offering new aromatic nuances with each return to the glass. The medium-bodied palate is silky and seamless with concentrated, spicy red fruit and a long, latent finish. It will need another 3–5 years in bottle to continue its development and show at its best. 1,083 cases were made. This will be released in February of 2023. (Erin Brooks)

Delivers inviting mulled blackberry and boysenberry fruit flavors, while red tea, dried anise, iris and mulling spice accents add perfumy range throughout. Reveals a light wet earth echo that keeps the finish just grounded enough. Drink now through 2028. 1,083 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Ripe and joyous dark cherry and berry pie aromas leap from the nose of this bottling, but it’s the earthy veil of loam, dust and chaparral spice that provides particular depth. The texture is firm and the energy is bright on the palate, where a refreshing acidity drives through black cherry compote, sumac and mace flavors. (Matt Kettmann)
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 9/21/2023
The 2021 Pinot Noir Garys’ Vineyard has a semi-opaque ruby hue (as do all of these 2021s from Roar) to go with medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of redcurrant, black raspberry, and mulberry-like fruit as well as lots of classic Pinot Noir black tea, underbrush, and spicy aromatics. This beauty has the most opulence and exuberance of all the Pinot Noirs on the palate and has a great mid-palate, lots of fruit and texture, and a great finish. It’s the most classically California-styled 2021 in the lineup and is going to put a smile on your face any time over the coming 5–7 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
