Domaine Joseph Roty Mazy-Chambertin 2018 / 750 ml.

Item#: 95701

RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jan 2021
The 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with aromas of dark berry fruit, woodsmoke, plums, dark chocolate, licorice and spices. Full-bodied and layered, it’s deep and concentrated, with a muscular, introverted profile and a long, lively finish. This is a serious, structured Mazis from Roty, and it will take time to show all its cards.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020
The 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is well defined on the nose, featuring graphite-infused black fruit laced with aromas of Christmas cake and loam. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, slightly tarry black fruit and some vanilla-y new oak on the finish that will require several years to be fully subsumed. Very good length but patience required.

Where It's From

Region / Burgundy

View more wines from Burgundy

In eastern France lies the region of Burgundy, one of the legendary wine regions of the world. Burgundy, home to some of the most expensive wines in the world, is famous for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. With very few exceptions, red Burgundy is made from 100% Pinot Noir. And the reigning white of Burgundy, Chardonnay, can vary incredibly in style depending on where it was produced within the region.

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

The 2018 Côte de Nuits-Villages exhibits aromas of cherries, wild plums and cassis mingled with hints of loamy soil and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, bright and lively, it’s serious and tightly wound, with fine depth at the core and chalky structuring tannins. As I’ve written before, this cuvée derives from vines in the lieu-dit of Queue de Hareng in Brochon, neighboring Denis Bachelet’s.

The 2018 Côte de Nuits-Villages has a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, which is a little savory in style and suggests a touch of melted tar. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, a fine bead of acidity and very good tension toward the chalky-textured finish. Excellent.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Fontenys wafts from the glass with aromas of cassis, cherries and dark chocolate, complemented by hints of licorice, loamy soil and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and multidimensional, it’s serious and concentrated, with a deep, elegantly muscular profile that will richly reward bottle age, concluding with a long finish.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fontenys 1er Cru comes from a single 0.5-hectare parcel. It possesses quite a complex bouquet of violet-infused black fruit and a light marine influence (shucked oyster shells). The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy black cherry and mineral-rich blueberry fruit, fine backbone and a very saline finish. Excellent.

Another fine cuvée is the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur Bas, a wine derived from the part of this lieux-dit classified at the communal level, where Roty observes his grapes are always especially thick skinned. Offering up aromas of cherries, raspberries, cassis and rose petals, framed by toast oak, it’s medium to full-bodied, concentrated and muscular, with the most depth and structure of Roty’s three lieux-dits.
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur Bas is very well defined on the nose, suggesting a mixture of around two-thirds black and one-third red fruit, laced with orange peel and light pain d’épices aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, layered black cherry and boysenberry fruit and graphite and light fig notes. White pepper lingers toward the finish, which fans out nicely. Excellent.

The 2018 Marsannay opens in the glass with notes of spiced plums, cherries and dark chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with powdery tannins and a lively, charming profile, this has turned out nicely and will offer a broad drinking window.
VN8888 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020
The 2018 Marsannay Village, a blend of several parcels, is high-toned on the nose of blueberry and black cherries; touches of India ink and incense evolve in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied and grippy, with dense tannins, a grainy texture, flavors of black cherries and black currant fruit and a lightly spiced finish. This does not quite reach my expectations from barrel.

JD9696 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - November 24, 2020
Partially destemmed and brought up in 20% new French oak, the 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a smoky, powerful bouquet of mulled black cherries, mulberries, candied violets, licorice, and forest floor. These carry to a full-bodied, concentrated, gorgeous wine with silky tannins, a layered, multi-dimensional texture, plenty of structure, and a great, great finish. This is seriously good juice that’s going to benefit from 3–5 years of bottle age and cruise for two decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN91+91–93 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is made with 30% whole bunch and 20% new oak. It has a perfumed bouquet with iris and incense aromas infusing the black cherry and cassis fruit, quite opulent and yet remaining nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh and quite citrus-like in style, although it relinquishes a little precision as it nears the finish.

The 2018 Marsannay Boivin is very fragrant and floral on the nose, where crushed violet and peony scents underlie the opulent black fruit. The palate is silky-smooth on the entry, one of Roty’s most polished Marsannay cuvées, with a slightly tarry, spicy finish. Great energy here. This should age well in bottle. Highly recommended.

From parcels in Marsannay, Roty’s 2018 Bourgogne Rouge offers up aromas of cherries, raspberries, dark chocolate and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety, with powdery tannins and a succulent core of fruit, it’s showing well.
VN8686 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2020
The 2018 Bourgogne Rouge comes from a selection of parcels in Marsannay. This just flirts with some overripeness on the nose, where fig and tinned prune tincture the blueberry and cassis fruit. The palate is very concentrated with intense macerated black cherries, cassis and white pepper notes. Powerful and grippy on the finish, which is obviously very Marsannay in style. This will need 2–3 years in bottle.
