DNA Vineyards Pinot Noir 2021 / 750 ml.

Item#: 87132

SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2023
Dark in profile, with plum and maraschino cherry notes pumping through. While the fruit flavors are mixed with a noticeable dose of toast, this has the energy for balance, revealing licorice and apple wood accents on the finish. Drink now through 2027. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 1,003 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Some text about the Russian River Valley.

District / Sonoma County

View more wines from Sonoma County

Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.

Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.

Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

Region / California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Deep and powerful fruits like black cherries and blueberries fill the aroma before tanginess chimes in on the palate along with blackberries, sour cherries and mint. It’s a complex, detailed wine, wonderful to drink soon and through 2030. (Jim Gordon)

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Jun 2023
The 2021 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley was matured for 15 months in 34% new oak. It has a medium ruby color and generous aromatic layers of lavender, licorice, eucalyptus and forest floor with a core of dark fruit. The medium-bodied palate is powerful, its concentrated fruit complemented by well-integrated oak spice. It has abundant, grainy tannins, bursts of mouthwatering acidity and a very long, layered finish. Offer it another 2–3 years in bottle to unwind. (Erin Brooks)
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/21/2023
Taking on more richness both visually and aromatically, the 2021 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley is generous with violets, black cherry, and cola spices. Medium to full-bodied, it has ripe, sweet tannins, with notes of black tea, expansive black raspberry fruit, and toasted cedar. It offers good richness and has a classic feel with a long finish. Drink 2024–2034. (Audrey Frick)

A fresh and bright pinot with sliced-strawberry, raspberry and orange-peel aromas and flavors. Medium body with fine, racy tannins and a bright and energetic finish. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 4th May 2023
Frank Family’s 2021 Pinot Noir is a blend of several vineyards, built around the same primary sources as the Chardonnay and a short (nine-month) élevage in one-third new French oak. Nicely floral, with cinnamon accents to the cherry fruit, it’s medium-bodied, silky and pleasant, an easy-drinking, fun wine, for drinking young. (Joe Czerwinski)

WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2023
This is a classic Russian River Pinot, boasting ripe black cherries and black plums, rather soft acidity, and a warm, soothing texture of fine-grained tannins. While easy to enjoy now, it has the balance and concentration for further aging. Best from 2025–2032. (Jim Gordon)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2023
The 2021 Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley) is dense, heady and explosive. All the classic Russian River exuberance comes through, but amplified in all of the good ways and none of the bad. Even with all of the richness and intensity, the 2021 retains good freshness as well as energy. A touch of whole clusters brightens the finish nicely. (Antonio Galloni)

Plenty of dried strawberry with black cherry and hints of chocolate. Full and very fresh with orange-peel and floral undertones. Vivid fruit. Tangy. About 15% whole cluster. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

It has broody scents of blueberry, cranberry, rhubarb, cured meats, lavender and allspice. The medium-bodied palate has generous, juicy fruit, a soft, grainy frame and a long finish. Juicy black cherry and boysenberry aromas are generous on the nose of this single vineyard expression, with waves of wet soil and crushed slate adding a mineral nuance. The lush palate of Luxardo cherry and a spice rack of flavors is wrapped in grippy tannins that elevate this wine to the upper echelon. (Matt Kettmann)
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 9/21/2023
Another pretty, perfumed wine in the vintage, the 2021 Pinot Noir Sierra Mar Vineyard has ripe strawberry and framboise-like fruit as well as ample background spice and dried herb nuances, and it gains a darker, floral edge with time in the glass. Medium-bodied on the on the palate, with nicely integrated oak, velvety tannins, and just a round, supple mouthfeel, it’s drinking beautifully today and will be drinking beautifully in another 7–8 years as well. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2023
Ripe and with nice range, offering wood spice, incense, black and red tea and mulled plum and raspberry fruit notes that meld together through a lengthy finish. Reveals nice underlying freshness, too. Drink now through 2028. 617 cases made. (James Molesworth)
