When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Chimera is a rich, heady wine. A burst of dark red cherry, plum, lavender, rose petal and blood orange are all dialed up. This bold, generous Pinot delivers the goods, big time. It’s a fabulous entry-level offering from Sean Capiaux, if that term can even be used here. The Chimera is mostly young vines from Starscape, with dollops from Widdoes, Pisoni and Garys’. Pale ruby, the 2021 Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills offers fragrant scents of cranberry, forest floor and tar, with ringing notes of violet and aniseed. The medium-bodied palate features just-ripe, floral red fruits and abundant Angostura-like accents. It has fine, powdery, tannins and bursts of mouthwatering acidity that call you in for another sip on the long, flavorful finish. This detailed, layered Pinot Noir way overdelivers for its appellation-wide status. (Erin Brooks)

With fine-grained tannins and elevated acidity, this Pinot Noir is a friendly daily drinker. Notes of red and black cherry, boysenberry, red currant, damp forest floor, violets and roses are complemented by subtle oak tones of anise, nutmeg and toast. (Stacy Briscoe)

A rich ruby/purple, the 2021 Pinot Noir Land’s Edge Vineyards is ripe and rounded with a perfume of blackberry preserve, damp forest floor, and toasted baking spice. Full-bodied, but with clean lift and without weight, it has dark berries, candied flowers, sweet, ripe tannins, and a soft texture. This is an immediate wine, but it has good freshness and the structure to drink over the next 4–5 years. (Audrey Frick)

An overall well-balanced riper expression of Pinot Noir with notes of red cherry, pomegranate, raspberry, chocolate, anise, wooded forest and damp forest floor. (Stacy Briscoe)

Accents of flint and white pepper play off the tasty lemon, vanilla and green apple flavors of this medium-bodied, well-balanced wine. It’s reminiscent of a good Macon-Villages. (Jim Gordon)
