Oregon's Willamette Valley is the most-heralded wine region in the state, and home to some of the best Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris produced anywhere, aided in part by the especially cool growing season. The region is divided into two sub-regions, the North Willamette and South Willamette, and is named for the river of the same name which flows past the city of Portland.

Oregon didn't burst onto the wine scene until the 1980s, but it has since carved out a name for itself as a world-class region for cooler weather wines like Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. It's most famous for the former, with many critically-acclaimed Pinot Noirs originating in the region. The Willamette Valley is Oregon's most famous and most productive region. Other notable regions include the Rogue Valley, Walla Walla, and Columbia Valley.

Country / United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Same Region, Same Vintage, Same Grape
JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, April 4, 2023
A fresh and wild pinot with aromas of cherry stones, orange peel, soil, hibiscus and thyme. It’s medium-bodied with powdery tannins, crisp acidity and a mineral, earthy finish. Drink now. Screw cap. (James Suckling)

A fresh burst of wild strawberries, cloves and minty herbs introduces the 2021 Pinot Noir Provocateur. It’s soothing and round with a wiry textural frame and tart wild berries elevated by brisk acidity. The 2021 finishes classically dry with a slowly fading staining concentration over a bed of gently grippy tannins. (Eric Guido)

Lange Classique Pinot Noir 2021 / 750 ml.

Item #: 96642

WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2022
Made with various traditional and Dijon clones grown in north Willamette Valley vineyards, this Pinot Noir saw time in 25% new French oak. The aromas of red cherries and cranberries unite with dried rose petals and Christmas spices to create a heady perfume. The tannins are sturdy, and the acidity is elevated, which is good given how much fruit is here. Flavors like tart red raspberries, not-quite-ripe marionberries, hibiscus tea and bittersweet dark chocolate coat the palate in a pleasing fashion. (Michael Alberty)
JD8989 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 10/19/2022
Bottled under screwcap, the 2021 Pinot Noir Classique is perfumed with crushed raspberry, wildflowers, and pine. It is softly textured, with medium body, and is ripe with mixed red and blue berries, a lightly savory note of iron richness, and a clean, floral finish. This is a very pretty and approachable intro to the range to drink over the next 5–6 years. (Audrey Frick)

The Canary Hill is an aromatic powerhouse, combining blackberries, black tea, wet rocks and bittersweet dark chocolate. The wine’s rich, smooth texture is a perfect foil for flavors of cherry-vanilla gelato flecked with dark chocolate chips. There’s more than enough acidity and mildly chewy tannins to provide balance. (Michael Alberty)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2023
A wine that combines structure and verve, this Pinot is expressive, with raspberry and blueberry flavors laced with crushed stone, anise and dusky spices. Builds tension toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2031. 608 cases made. (Tim Fish)
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, May 9, 2023
Excellent concentration to this pinot with mulberries, dark raspberries, cola, cloves and anise on the nose. It’s medium-bodied and focused, with compact tannins and lingering dark spiciness. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
