When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Aromas of cola and baked berry show on the rich nose of this bottling. There’s a fresh blast of berry and then compelling forest-floor flavors on the palate, with hints of sagebrush and juniper. (Matt Kettmann)

The 2019 Pinot Noir Ferrington is resinous with medicinal herbs, black cherry fruit, and beet root. The palate is full and rounded with forward fruit, leading into savory notes of raspberry seed, wooded spice, and red plum skin. More structured in style, allow for a year or two in bottle and drink over the following 15 or so years. (Audrey Frick)
SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 23, 2022
Features expressive cherry and raspberry coulis flavors carried by very lively acidity. Judicious red licorice and floral notes gild the finish, letting the fruit play out nicely. Drink now through 2024. 282 cases made. (James Molesworth)

WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2023
A well-rounded, easily enjoyable sparkling rosé, this offers a persistent fine-bubbled mousse structure, resulting in an overall smooth drinking experience. You will find nuanced aromas and flavors of citrus blossom, grapefruit, watermelon, white strawberries, dewy morning grass, and a wet stone minerality, with just a hint of those autolytic toasty notes. The finish lingers with additional florals of pink roses and fresh daisies. (Stacy Briscoe)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2023
Offers pretty peach and strawberry flavors and a luscious, lingering texture as this takes on spice and orange peel accents on the crisp yet plush finish. Drink now. 19,350 cases made. (Tim Fish)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - May 2023
More savory than sweet and wonderfully complex, the 2019 Brut Rosé North Coast bursts from the glass with toasty notes of fresh baguette and almonds, giving way to crushed apples and gingery spice. This rushes the palate with an elegant bead of silken bubbles. It is creamy yet energetic, and mineral-tinged orchard fruits add further tension. The 2019 leaves the senses wonderfully refreshed through the long, crunchy finale, as white strawberry and spice cookie notes fade. The Brut Rosé is a pleasure bomb, yet it’s wonderfully balanced throughout. (Eric Guido)

WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - August 1, 2019
De Villiers was planted in 1997 on largely east-facing slopes high on Mt. Harlan. Josh Jensen used that fruit to produce this dark, smoky pinot noir. It quickly sheds its leather savor in favor of dark, burnished cherry spiced with pipe tobacco, cradled by oak but hardly dominated by it. Showing well now, it’s built for the long haul.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2019
One of the more expressive wines in the range, the 2016 Pinot Noir de Villiers Vineyard is soft, open knit and gracious, with an attractive combination of dark red cherry/plum fruit and the more floral/savory notes that develop from the 50% whole clusters. Lavender, mint, pine and sweet spice add layers of dimension to this supple, inviting Pinot from Calera. There is so much to like here.
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2019
There is impressive density to the bottling, starting with aromas of roasted black cherry and blackberry as well as cocoa and wood spice. It’s heavy on the palate with full flavors of blackberry, bay leaf and more dark chocolate.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 6th Feb 2020
Aged 17 months in 30% new French oak, the pale to medium ruby-purple colored 2016 Pinot Noir deVilliers Vineyard opens with warm blueberries, dried cherries and cranberries aromas with notions of fresh strawberries, dried herbs, dusty earth, underbrush and charcuterie. The palate is light to medium-bodied with earth and Angostura bitters-laced fruits, a grainy frame and bright freshness on the finish. 1,220 cases produced.

WS9494 pts. - Wine & Spirits - August 1, 2019
Josh Jensen planted his namesake vineyard in 1975, and from the moment this wine is poured, it shows the elegance and integration of old vines. It balances subtle oak notes with whole-cluster scents, dried lavender, purple flowers and notes of fine leather. The flavors feel vinous and bright, red-cherry-scented and slightly more acid driven than the other two Calera wines reviewed here, with a sleek texture that feels cool and built to age, if you can keep your hands off it in the cellar.
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2019
Strong aromas of black cherry and Christmas spice are plump on the nose, while the palate is minty and earthy, combining sagebrush, raspberry and cranberry flavors. From a brand that was recently purchased by Duckhorn, this is a complex, layered wine.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 6th Feb 2020
The 2016 Pinot Noir Jensen Vineyard, aged 17 months in 30% new French oak, has a pale to medium ruby color and is slow to unfurl on the nose, with tangerine, dried cranberries, wild blackberries, dried thyme, underbrush and hints of peppered meats coming through over time. Medium-bodied and silky, it unfurls in the mouth to amaro character, firmly framed and finishing long and fresh. 1,000 cases produced.
