This dark and velvety-textured wine tastes ripe and mouthfilling, as loads of fine-grained tannins cradle black-cherry, blueberry, dark-chocolate and cinnamon flavors. (Jim Gordon)

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

At $10, this is a total bang-for-the-buck Pinot Noir that incorporates layered aromas and flavors of raspberry, cranberry, wild strawberry, fresh and dried violet, baking spices, forest floor, mushroom, and a river rock minerality. Elevated acidity allows for a refreshing quality; medium tannins add just the right amount of texture. (Stacy Briscoe)

Perfumed aromas of red and black cherries, red licorice, cooking spice and rose water. Medium-to full-bodied with steady acidity that helps to articulate the dark-fruit and tobacco flavors, but retains freshness throughout. Sandy, easy-going tannins. Wet-stone finish. 100% estate grown. Drink now. Screw cap. (James Suckling)
The 2020 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is flush with pristine fruit on the nose, including cherry candy, crushed flowers, and forest floor. The palate is fresh with red raspberry and cinnamon, and it has refreshing acidity on the finish. This is a lovely, classic wine for drinking over the next couple of years. (Audrey Frick)

Strong toasted oak aromas and flavors get good backup from deep, dark blackberry jam and cocoa in this full-bodied, moderately tannic wine. It’s showy and robust but pulls off decent balance, too. (Jim Gordon)
