When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Very alluring, with damson plum, griotte and mulberry fruit seamlessly layered with black tea, sous-bois and sandalwood. The long, refined finish lets all the perfume linger prettily. Drink now through 2029. 4,800 cases made. (James Molesworth)

This Pinot Noir coming out of Lodi includes 10% Petite Sirah and 5% Rubired in the mix. The result is a ripe red- and black-fruit-driven expression with moderate acidity, a chalky tannic texture and an overall medium body. Find notes of boysenberry, Marionberry, red and black cherry, chocolate, cinnamon and licorice. (Stacy Briscoe)

Perfumed aromas of red and black cherries, red licorice, cooking spice and rose water. Medium-to full-bodied with steady acidity that helps to articulate the dark-fruit and tobacco flavors, but retains freshness throughout. Sandy, easy-going tannins. Wet-stone finish. 100% estate grown. Drink now. Screw cap. (James Suckling)

The 2020 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is flush with pristine fruit on the nose, including cherry candy, crushed flowers, and forest floor. The palate is fresh with red raspberry and cinnamon, and it has refreshing acidity on the finish. This is a lovely, classic wine for drinking over the next couple of years. (Audrey Frick)

The 2020 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is terrific and also one of the highlights of this very challenging year. A burst of red/purplish berry fruit, spice, lavender and rose petal is immediately alluring. There is a bit of grippiness here, but nothing a bit of aeration won’t take care of. (Antonio Galloni)

This handsome, well-structured wine deftly balances refined black fruits and subtle oak spices against fine-grained tannins. It has an elegance and polish that sets it apart, from the minty perfume to intricate fruits and a long finish. Best from 2026–2036. (Jim Gordon)
