The 2016 Barolo Turnè offers an attractive combination of bold, rich and powerful sweet tobacco, cedar, dried herbs, menthol, licorice and spice all build in a beautifully layered, expressive Barolo loaded with dimension and complexity. The 2016 is a wonderfully deep and nuanced wine made very much in the mid-weight style of the year.

Aromas of iris, tobacco and underbrush lead the way. The savory medium-bodied palate offers raspberry jam, clove and white pepper alongside firm, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2023–2032.

Located in northwestern Italy near the Italian Alps, Piedmont is home to two of Italy's more famous wines: Barolos and Barbarescos. Each of these wines are made with the Nebbiolo grape, which is the premier red grape in the region. Other red grapes of note used in Piedmont include Barbera and Dolcetto. Among white wine grapes used in Piedmont are Moscatos, which are increasing in popularity here in the US. Piedmont's capital city Torino is also home to large productions of Vermouth, also made from Moscato.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

The 2016 Barolo Margheria shows the natural weight and gravitas of Serralunga in its dark flavor profile and textural resonance. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice, mint, chalk and bright saline notes are all laced throughout. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2016 possesses tremendous persistence and class to burn. Wilder suggestions of sage and lavender add savory top notes, while searing tannins punctuate the finish.

Here is a wonderfully executed Barolo to applaud. The Azelia 2016 Barolo Margheria offers that classic twofold punch of power and elegance that is so nicely highlighted in wines from Serralunga d’Alba. For sure, the textural fiber of this wine is richer, denser and tighter than the others, and there is an attractive point of inner black fruit energy and tension that I did not find to the same extent in the Cerretta. If that wine is more focused on the base tones, this wine hits those high tones with better precision. The Margheria vines are 60 years old on average and planted in clayey and calcareous soils that render minerality to the wine. Some 6,100 bottles were rolled out.

Sandrone Vite Talin Barolo 2016 / 750 ml.

2016 / 750 ml.

Item #: 98961

RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022
This is a wine I have jealously followed since its birth. The Luciano Sandrone 2016 Barolo Vite Talin is another superstar. This is a complete wine, with depth, intensity and a fully generous and embracing personality. It’s like a warm hug. The tannins are tight and the wine needs more time to fully soften. At this young point in its life, it offers plenty of dark primary fruit, spice and black licorice. (Monica Larner)
VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2016 Barolo Vite Talin is a stunning wine, just as it always has been. Over the least few years, the 2016 has gained a measure of classicism it did not show as a young wine. The purity of the flavors, the wine’s balance, its pedigree, well, they are all off the charts. The Vite Talin emerges from two parcels with heavily virused vines that naturally produce a minuscule crop. It spent two years in 500-liter tonneaux and a year in cask. (Antonio Galloni)
WS9898 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 10/22
The grapes that produce this wine were grafted from a single vine that caught Luciano Sandrone’s attention in 1987; it was eventually proven to be a low-yielding clone of nebbiolo. He says it is almost like an extreme version of the Michet clone, with smaller berries and looser bunches that are less prone to mildew. This is the third release of Vite Talin, and while it shows the dense concentration characteristic of this wine, it also captures the freshness of the 2016 vintage in its delicate lavender scents and exhilarating acidity. Tightly wound flavors of black plum and dark cherry brim with umami savor, unfolding after a few hours in the glass to reveal notes of salted black licorice, hoisin and a brilliant streak of salinity.

Wow, this is super-succulent and silky smooth with concentrated aromas of plums, berries and fresh sous-bois notes of dried leaves and flowers. A note of powdery wet stone adds another dimension. Full-bodied palate, where some bright, oaky notes add their weight, creating a well-pitched blend of still firm oak and fruit tannin that creates a measured framework for all the complex flavors. The finish is long and driven. A multifaceted Barolo that’s a joy to taste now, but still needs a few years to show its best. Try from 2025.

The Basarin vineyard was badly damaged by hail in April 2017, but we have this beautiful vintage to focus on instead. The Sottimano 2016 Barbaresco Basarin is a contained and elegant expression with sharp intensity and defined aromas. You get wild fruit, spice, balsam herb and crushed mineral, all pretty much in equal measure. The wine flexes its muscle, adding volume and weight with each swirl of the glass. It shows energy and fluid movements. Sottimano farms a three-hectare plot in Basarin, in Neive but near the border with Treiso, with 50- to 60-year-old vines. Some 5,000 bottles were made. There is a wholeness to this vintage that you don’t get in 2017.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2018
The 2016 Barbaresco Basarin is bold, rich and expansive on the palate, with striking depth and tons of textural resonance. The dark, spiced flavors are typical of Barbarescos from Neive. Creamy, silky and inviting, the Basarin offers tremendous near and medium term appeal. More importantly, the 2016 is several notches more interesting than the 2015.
VN93+93+ pts. - Vinous - Nov 2019
The 2016 Barbaresco Basarin is elegant, perfumed and gracious. Sweet dark cherry, lavender, spice and mint all grace this nuanced, understated Barbaresco from Sottimano. The Basarin shows a decidedly aromatic, finessed expression of Neive. The 2016 has shut down a bit since I tasted it last year, but that should not be an issue, as it won’t be released until 2020.

Supremely elegant and light on its feet, La Spinetta’s 2016 Barbaresco Vigneto Gallina is simply fabulous. Freshly cut flowers, mint, spice and a touch of French oak add nuance to a core of sweet red/purplish berry fruit. Wonderfully supple and racy, the Gallina captures every bit of the potential 2016 had to offer. This is such a gorgeous wine. I can’t remember tasting a Gallina here with this much diversity.
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 7, 2019
Wow. This is at once a pronounced and vibrant nose, revealing wild strawberries, peaches, freshly picked raspberries, cinnamon, rose petals and stems. I love the steely tannins on the palate, which carve out an iron fist of fruit, but also a generous and velvety texture. Long and intense on the finish. Drink from 2024.

The 2016 Barolo Gattera is one of the best recent editions of this wine I can remember tasting. The natural richness and fruit intensity of this hillside site make for a beautifully expressive Barolo. Dark cherry, hard candy, plum, spice, sweet lavender, graphite and leather all infuse the 2016 with notable character and captivating inner perfume. The Gattera is a blend of two parcels, both southwest facing. It is 2016 is a positively stunning wine.
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
The Cordero di Montezemolo 2016 Barolo Gattera brings on an extra level of intensity and concentration when tasted beside the slightly more accessible Barolo Monfalletto. This wine represents a selection of the best fruit from the site at the upper parts of the vineyard. The wine’s concentration or overall richness is nudged up a notch. It’s not easy choosing a favorite between Monfalletto and Gattera in this beautifully balanced vintage; however, this wine appeals to those who appreciate more dark blackberry power and fruit weight in their Barolo. The tannins are silky and smooth, showcasing the best of La Morra fruit. I’d pair this with braised meat or any dish involving precious truffles from Alba.
JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, September 3, 2020
A really creamy, polished Barolo with ripe tannins and a fruity yet complex palate, highlighted by tar, chocolate and cedar. It’s full-bodied and rich at the finish. Try after 2023.
WS9595 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2020
This estate’s 2.5 acres of vines sit just below the iconic cedar of Lebanon at the top of the Gattera cru in La Morra. The wine underwent a relatively brief maceration yet is densely concentrated, its warmed cherry and pomegranate flavors rich and penetrating, supported by fine tannins that feel like iron dust distributed evenly throughout the wine. Notes of mocha, licorice and spice linger on the warm, sensuous finish.
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2020
Aromas of French oak, coconut, dark-skinned fruit and blue flower lead the way. Linear and firmly structured, the full-bodied palate offers ripe Marasca cherry, vanilla and toasted hazelnut alongside taut close-grained tannins. Drink after 2024–2031.
