Paolo Scavino Barolo 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 1367

JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, July 28, 2023
The fresh flowers, like roses, really come through here. Perfumed. Sliced strawberry and citrus. Full-bodied with linear and tight tannins. Bright acidity gives it drive and focus. Give it four or five years to soften and come together. (James Suckling)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2023
A supple, vibrant Barolo, with fine depth to the cherry, raspberry and floral aromas and flavors. Solidly built, with refined tannins and a long, juicy aftertaste. Reveals earth, iron and tobacco accents that linger. Best from 2026 through 2042. 3,000 cases made, 900 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023
Pouring a jeweled ruby hue, the 2019 Barolo is lovely and detailed, with floral perfume and notes of candied roses, raspberry preserves, and sweet baking spices. This medium-bodied red is mouthwatering from the start and is balanced with ripe red berries, orange peel, and cinnamon. Fine yet present tannins are propelled forward by fresh acidity and a mineral-tinged finish. I continue to be impressed with the direction this estate has been heading in, and this wine is certainly no exception, lending great insight into the work they have put in. Drink 2024–2034. (Audrey Frick)
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Aug 2023
The Paolo Scavino 2019 Barolo (with Enrico Scavino’s signature on the front label) was a little slow to open and showed some reductive qualities when I tasted it. Give it more time to develop. Reading between the lines, you get bright cherry and raspberry with mild spice, licorice and tar. It ends with mineral sensations and easy Nebbiolo tannins (that are still young but aligned). Some 45,000 bottles were made. (Monica Larner)

Where It's From

Region / Piedmont

View more wines from Piedmont

Located in northwestern Italy near the Italian Alps, Piedmont is home to two of Italy's more famous wines: Barolos and Barbarescos. Each of these wines are made with the Nebbiolo grape, which is the premier red grape in the region. Other red grapes of note used in Piedmont include Barbera and Dolcetto. Among white wine grapes used in Piedmont are Moscatos, which are increasing in popularity here in the US. Piedmont's capital city Torino is also home to large productions of Vermouth, also made from Moscato.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Pale ruby with an orange hue, the 2019 Barolo is expressive with floral and spice, including dried flowers, fresh herbs, and pomegranate. It is medium-bodied and structured, with elegance and freshness, and strikes a balance between tension and gracefulness. Fresh with raspberries and a note of sandy earth, it is drinking well now but should not be ruled out for aging phenomenally over the next 10–12 years. (Audrey Frick)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2019 Barolo is gorgeous. Bright, translucent and wonderfully expressive, the 2019 hints at a very different style here than in the past. Crushed red berry fruit, wild flowers, mint, sweet red cherry and incense are all beautifully lifted in this weightless, super-classic Barolo from Molino. Impressive. (Antonio Galloni)

Brooding and powerful in its character, the 2019 Barolo Riva del Bric pours a deer garnet/ruby, with fleshy black cherry, sweet saddle leather, and balsamic. A full-bodied Barolo. It expands through the palate, with ripe tannins, iron-rich earth, and warmth throughout. Though it would appeal to more modern-slanting palates, it is not flashy from oak makeup but rather leans into the ripeness of fruit and broadness in structure and is well-balanced. Drink 2025–2037. Fresh and vibrant with red berry, blood orange, crushed hazelnut, hibiscus and spice aromas and flavors. Medium- to full-bodied, tense and linear with a backbone of firm, finely grained tannins and steady minerality. Needs some time. Try after 2027. (James Suckling)
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Aug 2023
The Conterno Fantino 2019 Barolo Castelletto Vigna Pressenda is medium dark and more concentrated compared to many of its peers. This wine shows a solid bouquet with fixed aromas of wild cherry, long-stemmed rose and candied orange. With time, even more floral aromas are coaxed forward from the bouquet. Beyond those are oak-driven notes of allspice and cinnamon. The tannins are polished, and the wine offers quite a bit of fruit texture. Production is 6,600 bottles. (Monica Larner)

Presents cherry, raspberry, sun-kissed hay, mineral and spice aromas and flavors that curl around an acidic spine and tannins. This has all the right components, matched to a slim, taut frame, with fine length. Best from 2026 through 2043. 600 cases made, 180 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Leather, vanilla and spice aromas are expressive, yet underneath there are subtle notes of rose, strawberry, cherry and iron. As this red evolves on the palate, it firms up, remaining harmonious and resonant through the lingering finish. Eucalyptus and wild herb elements emerge with air. Compelling. Best from 2025 through 2045. 500 cases made, 60 cases imported.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
Showing resolve and determination, the Paolo Scavino 2017 Barolo Ravera (with fruit from Novello) offers more concentration and a much darker quality of fruit with blackberry and plum. Ravera gives us density and power and a generous display of dark spice with tobacco and toasted hazelnut. Despite that extra muscle and heft, I love how the tannins are so expertly integrated into the fruit.
WS9494 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/21
Having bought a 6.75-acre Ravera plot in 2015, the Scavino family now owns vineyards in 20 different crus of Barolo; this one is their highest-elevation holding and the last to be harvested. The wine exhibits the freshness typical of Ravera even in warmer vintages. Notes of menthol amplify that freshness, as do the cool, mineral tannins that keep the ripe red- and black-cherry flavors taut and precise.

VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2022
The 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo is another terrific entry-level wine from Scavino. It shows good depth and plenty of intensity, especially in its peer group. This is far from an easygoing wine. Readers will find a Nebbiolo redolent of dark red cherry, dried herb, cedar, mint, licorice and incense. The 2021 will delight readers on a budget. (Antonio Galloni)
SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2022
This is loaded with succulent cherry, raspberry, floral and spice flavors. While this shows solid tannins, the fruit wins out in the end, with very good balance overall and a lingering finish. Drink now through 2026. 2,600 cases made, 350 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2019 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is the hallmark wine of the estate, and it shows. Taking on more concentration, it is pure and generous with kirsch, star anise, nutmeg, and menthol and moves impressively to the palate with ease and nobility. It offers fantastic depth while remaining true to the vintage and propels forward through an arch of acidity, while having grounded notes of Earl Grey tea, black cherry, and crushed stones as well as ripe tannins. Drink 2026–2046. (Audrey Frick)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2023
A supple, graceful red announced by rose, cherry, licorice, iron and white pepper aromas and flavors. This is no pushover, however, with a layer of dense, pointed tannins that resonate on the long aftertaste. Shows excellent balance and complexity. Best from 2027 through 2046. 675 cases made, 203 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
