Paolo Conterno Barolo Riva del Bric 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 99993

JD9393 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023
Brooding and powerful in its character, the 2019 Barolo Riva del Bric pours a deer garnet/ruby, with fleshy black cherry, sweet saddle leather, and balsamic. A full-bodied Barolo. It expands through the palate, with ripe tannins, iron-rich earth, and warmth throughout. Though it would appeal to more modern-slanting palates, it is not flashy from oak makeup but rather leans into the ripeness of fruit and broadness in structure and is well-balanced. Drink 2025–2037. (Audrey Frick)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2024
Though a bit rigid, this red features cherry, black currant, iron and leafy underbrush flavors. Light-bodied, this is sustained by a layer of firm, dusty tannins. Best from 2025 through 2038. 1,666 cases made, 500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Region / Piedmont

View more wines from Piedmont

Located in northwestern Italy near the Italian Alps, Piedmont is home to two of Italy's more famous wines: Barolos and Barbarescos. Each of these wines are made with the Nebbiolo grape, which is the premier red grape in the region. Other red grapes of note used in Piedmont include Barbera and Dolcetto. Among white wine grapes used in Piedmont are Moscatos, which are increasing in popularity here in the US. Piedmont's capital city Torino is also home to large productions of Vermouth, also made from Moscato.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Pale ruby with an orange hue, the 2019 Barolo is expressive with floral and spice, including dried flowers, fresh herbs, and pomegranate. It is medium-bodied and structured, with elegance and freshness, and strikes a balance between tension and gracefulness. Fresh with raspberries and a note of sandy earth, it is drinking well now but should not be ruled out for aging phenomenally over the next 10–12 years. (Audrey Frick)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2023
A firm red highlighted by ripe cherry, strawberry, hibiscus and tomato leaf flavors. Reveals earth and eucalyptus details, while gripping tannins flex on the lingering finish. Best from 2025 through 2040. 3,500 cases made, 2,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2019 Barolo is gorgeous. Bright, translucent and wonderfully expressive, the 2019 hints at a very different style here than in the past. Crushed red berry fruit, wild flowers, mint, sweet red cherry and incense are all beautifully lifted in this weightless, super-classic Barolo from Molino. Impressive. (Antonio Galloni)

Luigi Baudana Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba 2019 / 750 ml.

del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba
2019 / 750 ml.

VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2019 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba shows all the breadth of Serralunga, but in the somewhat austere style that runs through all the wines this year. Dark red fruit, sage, mint, leather and spice fill out the layers effortlessly. Rich and ample, yet super-classic, the Serralunga Barolo hits all the right notes. It may very well be the hidden gem in the entire Vajra range. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2023
Packs a kernel of cherry, raspberry, floral and iron flavors wrapped tightly in a dense matrix of tannins. This red is lean and focused, with vibrant acidity and dusty tannins. Shows fine length. Best from 2026 through 2043. 580 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)

San Rocco is a small MGA located on the northern side of Serralunga d’Alba with steep slopes that open toward Cerretta with clay and limestone. The 2019 Barolo San Rocco (with 7,300 bottles made) benefits from tighter space and a protected microclimate to produce powerful wines. However, this vintage certainly needs more time in bottle and is nowhere near expressing its full potential now. The bouquet is rigid and unyielding at this time. This is a characteristic of San Rocco. (Monica Larner)
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, July 28, 2023
Lemon blossom with cherry and sliced strawberry aromas that follow through to a medium body, with firm and lightly austere tannins and a bright finish. Cedar and orange peel to the fruit. Needs time to soften. Better after 2027. (James Suckling)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2023
Broad and fleshy, this red evokes cherry, plum, menthol and tar flavors underlined by a layer of stiff tannins. Compact, with a lightly astringent finish. Best from 2027 through 2042. 600 cases made, 180 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2019 Barbaresco stands apart, thanks to the pleasantly bold and intact quality of its bouquet that is laced with sweet cherry fruit, candied orange, blue flower, rusty ore and iodine. This unique expression offers an equal measure of sweetness, which is contrasted against savory tones, with impressive precision and balance. I highly recommend this classic Barbaresco from the talented team at Moccagatta. Some 8,000 bottles were released at a reasonable price. (Monica Larner)
JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, October 5, 2022
Very floral with crushed berries and hints of lemon leaf in the nose. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins that are polished and together. Delicate finish. Drink now or hold. (James Suckling)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2023
Rich and framed by vanilla and oak spice flavors, this Barbaresco also reveals cherry, earth and menthol notes. The mouthwatering finish is lined with grainy tannins. Best from 2025 through 2039. 500 cases made, 165 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
Moccagatta’s 2019 Barbaresco is racy and expressive, which makes it a good choice for near-term drinking, once the tannins soften a bit. Cinnamon, blood orange and spice add aromatic presence to this bright, supple Barbaresco from vines in Muncagota, Basarin and Cottá. Floral notes leave a closing accent on the taut finish. The 2019 Barolo Baudana is absolutely captivating. Effusive and bright in the glass, with tons of freshness and remarkable fruit purity, the Baudana offers up generous dark red fruit, spice, leather, kirsch, hard candy, cedar, tobacco and underbrush. There’s terrific depth here and exceptional balance, too. Rose petal, white pepper and chalk lift the high-toned, intensely saline finish. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2023
Cherry, raspberry liqueur, mint and mineral flavors highlight this taut, dense red, which is balanced, with eucalyptus and juniper notes chiming in on the protracted finish. Best from 2026 through 2045. 570 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)

Delivers a whiff of grilled beef that gives way to flavors of cherry, raspberry, rose hip and mineral. Compact, even austere, as assertive tannins emerge on the resonant finish. Best from 2026 through 2045. 6,500 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2019 Barolo Albe is a nuanced, understated wine, but it is also a rare Albe that needs time in bottle. Sweet floral and spice notes open first, leading to an attractive core of Nebbiolo fruit. Gentle and understated, with lovely precision, the 2019 Albe is a hushed wine that is more about energy than size. I have seen the Albe really blossom with a few years in bottle. I expect that will be the case here as well given its super-classic feel. (Antonio Galloni)

RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Aug 2023
The 2019 Barolo Le Vigne is a historic blend of fruit from Baudana in Serralunga d’Alba, Villero in Castiglione Falletto, Vignane in Barolo and Merli in Novello. This year, a fifth site was added to the final blend. It is the Le Coste MGA in Barolo with south-facing exposures and 45-year-old vines in a two-hectare parcel. The backbone of this wine is Baudana, and Merli adds freshness. The wine needs more time in bottle, but already it proves generous and bold with dark fruit, spice and crushed mineral. (Monica Larner)
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2019 Barolo Le Vigne is pure and total seduction. Kirsch, sweet pipe tobacco, mint, cedar, dried herbs and orange peel all grace a Le Vigne built on mid-weight structure and energy. There is a feeling of youthful classicism and austerity that is so beguiling. Readers should plan on being patient, though. The 2019 won’t be ready to drink anytime soon, but there is enough fruit to make me think it will be superb, in time. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2023
A tightly wound red, with floral, cherry, iron, earth and underbrush aromas and flavors. Beefy, with the vintage's characteristic austerity and a strong grip on the finish. The tannins lend a compact feel in the end, yet this stretches out on the finish, with a core of pure fruit. Best from 2027 through 2047. 1,500 cases made, 350 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

A taut red, with hay and grass aromas giving way to cherry, strawberry, earth and iron flavors. This has all the components in the right place, with a firm structure and lightly astringent finish. Shows fine harmony and length. Best from 2026 through 2042. 3,350 cases made, 800 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Aug 2023
With a really fun retro-looking label, the Ascheri 2019 Barolo shows a classic playlist of Nebbiolo aromas with redcurrant, iris, rusty nail and licorice. The wine sits well on the palate, even at this young stage, thanks to fresh acidity and integrated tannins. This is a good-looking bottle for near and medium-term consumption. Fruit is blended from La Morra, Verduno and Serralunga d’Alba. Some 38,500 bottles were made. (Monica Larner)

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Aug 2023
This is the most accessible Barolo from Vietti and the wine that casts the biggest net in terms of fruit sourcing from across many MGA sites. The 2019 Barolo Castiglione is a layered and generous wine that reflects the main takeaways offered by this very successful vintage. In fact, because this wine is not from a single site, it speaks more to the quality of the vintage than it does to any one specific vineyard. The Castiglione reveals generous richness and concentrated cherry fruit with dark saturation and good structure that comes from the thicker skins developed on Nebbiolo grapes this year. It concludes with a salty mineral note that adds focus and elegance. (Monica Larner)
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, July 28, 2023
Extremely perfumed with hibiscus, flowers and watermelon with some fresh cherries. Medium-bodied with chewy, polished tannins and a fresh and vivid finish. Very solid. Made from about 20 different vineyards. Needs time to soften. Vegan. Drink after 2027. (James Suckling)
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2019 Barolo Castiglione is elegant, translucent and classy. Crushed red berry fruit, orange peel, mint and cinnamon all grace this elegant, wonderfully nuanced Barolo from Vietti. I especially admire the energy here. In many vintages, the Castiglione is easygoing and quite accessible, but I see the 2019 needing a few more years to come into its own. I especially admire its focus and cut. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2023
A fruity style, featuring cherry, raspberry, violet and mineral flavors. Shows finesse, along with fine harmony, length and a chalky feel on the fresh finish. Best from 2025 through 2040. 8,346 cases made, 1,800 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2024
Truly a classic example of the historic Barolo blend, this wine opens with a basket full of dark-hued fruits supported by more subtle elements of forest floor, truffle, dried wildflowers and wild herbs. The giving palate shows that young Nebbiolo is not just destined to rest in the cellar as plump cherries, layers of spice and supple tannins define the palate, finishing with refreshing acidity. Drink now–2040. (Jeff Porter)
