Critical Acclaim

WE94 Wine Enthusiast 9/1/2020

"Red-berry, blue-flower and menthol aromas mingle with tobacco notes on this full-bodied red. It’s youthfully austere, featuring red cherry, pomegranate, dried herb and star anise set against assertive, close-grained tannins that clench the firm finish. Give the tannins time to unwind and to let it fully develop. Drink 2026–2046." (94 pts.)

JS95 JamesSuckling.com Tuesday, August 4, 2020

"Aromas and flavors of strawberries, cherries and walnuts are well-integrated into a medium body with round, fine tannins and a delicious finish. It really has strength with finesse. Goes on and on. Better after 2023." (95 pts.)

RP95+ Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 23rd Jul 2020

"The Oddero family suggests tasting their single-vineyard Baroli in this order: Villero, Rocche di Castiglione, Brunate and Bussia. Starting off with the 2016 Barolo Villero, you get an open-knit but very precise expression in which the Nebbiolo grape is able to show its delicate nuances of wild cherry, rose hip, pressed violet and cola. The wine is silky and graceful. This Villero hits all the magic spots in the classic 2016 vintage. It should be exciting to chart its progression over time." (95+ pts.)

SP96 Wine Spectator Mar 31, 2021

"Intense flavors of black currant and black cherry are shaded by iron, tar and tobacco in this toned yet powerful red. This is balanced, though needs time to absorb the dense, chalky tannins. The aftertaste extends the fruit element, along with mineral and tobacco accents. Best from 2023 through 2045. 660 cases made." (96 pts.)

VN94 Vinous Feb 2020

"Black cherry, cloves, melted road tar, licorice and leather all run through Oddero’s 2016 Barolo Villero. Deep on the palate with huge swaths of tannin, the Villero is a decidedly big, virile wine that is going to need time to fully come together. I imagine it will always be a powerhouse, however. The Villero is not especially elegant; the bombastic style clearly favors power over finesse — at least, it does today. Even so, there is plenty of Nebbiolo character and classic, old-school austerity." (94 pts.)

Piedmont

Located in northwestern Italy near the Italian Alps, Piedmont is home to two of Italy's more famous wines: Barolos and Barbarescos. Each of these wines are made with the Nebbiolo grape, which is the premier red grape in the region. Other red grapes of note used in Piedmont include Barbera and Dolcetto. Among white wine grapes used in Piedmont are Moscatos, which are increasing in popularity here in the US. Piedmont's capital city Torino is also home to large productions of Vermouth, also made from Moscato.

Italy

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.
