Always a standout wine, the Oddero 2018 Barolo Brunate is a complete wine, and I use that word specifically because it shows balance, freshness, length and structure. It has all the basics of an age-worthy Nebbiolo that promises to increase in complexity and depth with more cellar age. At this young stage, the bouquet is singing with dark fruit, cherry, spice and sweet earth. (Monica Larner)
What a delight it is to taste Oddero’s 2018 Barolo Brunate. A glorious wine, the Oddero Brunate is one of the very few wines in this vintage that possesses real mid-palate depth and notable textural intensity. It is the smallest production wine here. I imagine that the slightly smaller cask used for this wine was an advantage in giving the 2018 a bit of extra flesh that is missing in this vintage. What impresses me most about the 2018, though, is its freshness and the primary intensity of the fruit. Iron, smoke, tobacco, dried herbs, chalk and a whole range of savory accents develop over time, rounding things out in style. What a wine! (Antonio Galloni)
Pouring a jeweled ruby, the 2018 Barolo Brunate needs some air on opening before revealing significant depth and balance for this cooler and wet vintage, with notes of balsamic herbs, black raspberry, and mineral earth. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins, pure red cherry fruit fills the palate, and the wine has a long floral finish with rose petals and a stony texture. It is deserving of at least another year in the cellar. Drink 2024–2040. (Audrey Frick)
Camphor, violet, oak-driven spice and woodland berry aromas shape the nose. Lithe and polished, the full-bodied palate offers ripe Morello cherry, coconut, vanilla and star anise set against fine-grained tannins that leave a drying close. (Kerin O’Keefe)
A pure, elegant style, this red reveals cherry, strawberry, rose, iron and tobacco aromas and flavors allied to a graceful frame. Firms up on the finish yet remains juicy and long. Best from 2024 through 2035. 150 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)

Where It's From
Region / Piedmont
Located in northwestern Italy near the Italian Alps, Piedmont is home to two of Italy's more famous wines: Barolos and Barbarescos. Each of these wines are made with the Nebbiolo grape, which is the premier red grape in the region. Other red grapes of note used in Piedmont include Barbera and Dolcetto. Among white wine grapes used in Piedmont are Moscatos, which are increasing in popularity here in the US. Piedmont's capital city Torino is also home to large productions of Vermouth, also made from Moscato.
Country / Italy
Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.
Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

All these wines in this flight from Andrea Oberto show a powerful 15% alcohol content across the board. It’s all a bit much. The 2018 Barolo del Comune di La Morra reveals ripe fruit, dried cherry, black rose and toasted anise. The bouquet is very pretty indeed, but the muscle of the mouthfeel suggests a pairing with grilled or skillet-seared meat. (Monica Larner)
Some rich berry and mild-spice character. Medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannin that emerges at the end. A bit heady, but should drink well from 2024. (James Suckling)
The 2018 Barolo del Comune di La Morra is a fleshy, succulent wine to drink now and over the next decade or so. Sweet red cherry, spice, cedar and tobacco are nicely pushed forward. Soft curves and silky tannins add to an impression of immediacy. It’s hard to go wrong here. Vineyard sites are Annunziata, Boilo and San Francesco. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2018 Sass Russ is absolutely gorgeous. Readers who enjoy Alto Piemonte wines will find much to like in the tension, energy and nuance here. Crushed leaves, tobacco, mint, dried cherry and herbs all come together in the glass, all framed by clean mineral notes that extend the finish beautifully. The 2018 is all subtlety and class. This is well-oaked, with layers of vanilla, toast and spice notes wrapped around plum, licorice and tar flavors. There is weight and power, with muscular tannins, yet an overriding sense of balance and harmony. Best from 2025 through 2040. 1,100 cases made, 500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
Bric Balin is a proprietor name for a 2.4-hectare site within the Muncagota cru. The Moccagatta 2018 Barbaresco Bric Balin is a beautifully dense and rich expression, with deep layers of dark fruit and plenty of steady intensity. it is powered by a 15% alcohol content that is not overly noticeable. The wine is structured and tight with an especially developed texture and structure that adds to the wine’s overall length and staying power. The Bric Balin shows an elegant, firm and well-etched side of the vintage and offers us a fine wine from Moccagatta. Some 4,800 bottles were released.

Heady aromas of camphor, rose petal and red forest berry come to the forefront along with whiffs of pipe tobacco and new leather. Full-bodied but refined and well-balanced, the savory palate features ripe Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and mint alongside velvety tannins and fresh acidity. Drink 2026–2033. (Kerin O’Keefe)
The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero shows a beautiful signature of pressed violets, rose garden, white stone, crushed peppercorn and grilled rosemary. The wine is smooth and soft in texture, yet it feels stitched up and firm at the back thanks to the support it gets from those balanced tannins. This wine should hold 20 years or more. (Monica Larner)
The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero is broad, ample and so expressive, all while showing the finesse and classicism that are such a signature of this wine. All elements are so well balanced in a Barolo that speaks to harmony above all else. Sweet red cherry, cedar, orange peel, tobacco and cinnamon give the 2018 tons of aromatic presence. Best of all, the 2018 will drink well with minimal cellaring. It’s a gorgeous wine in every way. (Antonio Galloni)
This elegant and spicy Barolo offers flavors of soft strawberry and cherry laced with notes of fennel bulb, sweet basil and white pepper. The tannins feel cool and polished, contributing to the overall impression of finesse and the immediate appeal of this wine.

Fresh and lifted, the 2018 Barbaresco Basarin is forward with notes of dusty earth, anise, and dried apricot. The palate is medium-bodied and reveals notes of blood orange, dried raspberry, and tea leaf. Another finessed and approachable wine from the Adriano estate’s 2018s, it can be enjoyed now or over the next 10–11 years. Drink 2021–2032. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Although dense and taut, this red evokes cherry and currant underneath the tobacco, iron and eucalyptus flavors. Intense and focused, showing good balance and length. Best from 2025 through 2040. 1,750 cases made, 500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

del comune di La Morra
2018 / 750 ml.
Item #: 99065
I like the first impression of savory, clove-stuck baked-apple on the nose, broadening out into ripe red berries and milder, nutty, oak-induced spice. Medium-to-full bodied with the same mix of spice and fruit that envelops the tannins and provides a lengthy, flavorful finish. Rather an unique Barolo and fun to taste now, but definitely poised for some aging. Best from 2024.
Ellena Giuseppe positions its 2018 Barolo del Comune di La Morra at a very tempting price point. The blend sees fruit from four separate vineyard sites in La Morra (of which two are inside the Ascheri MGA). The long, polished elegance of that site is in fact the motor that drives this wine. With 12,000 bottles made, it reveals dark fruit, rose petal and soft earthy sensations. Winemaking sees 60 days of maceration in stainless steel and 24 months of oak aging (using a combination of large botte and smaller barrique). (Monica Larner)
This red evokes resin and tar elements surrounding macerated cherry and plum flavors. Lean and sinewy, with a chewy finish. Best from 2024 through 2035. 1,250 cases made, 450 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Seamlessly stitched together, the G.D. Vajra 2018 Barolo Ravera reveals tight layering and smooth texture. Fruit comes from an amphitheater of vines with Tortoniana epoch sandstone clay that is typical of parts of Barolo and Novello. What stands out here is the mineral character of the wine. It frames a dark core of plum, dark cherry and soft spice. (Monica Larner)
This wine shows a darker and more savory profile than Vajra’s Costa di Rose, its black-cherry flavors tinged with notes of licorice and tobacco. Scents of lavender and violet lend a delicate touch to the wine, which continued to gain verve and freshness with time in the glass.
The 2018 Barolo Ravera is a powerful, tightly wound wine. Gravel, smoke, cured meats, spice, leather, tobacco and menthol emerge, but only with quite a bit of reticence. This deceptively mid-weight Barolo has a good bit of brawn. It will be interesting to see if the fruit emerges from behind the tannins. (Antonio Galloni)
This supple, elegant red leads with bright cherry, raspberry and floral aromas and flavors. Reveals details of tar and eucalyptus as this firms up on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2025 through 2042. 508 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)
This focused, fragrant red offers aromas of woodland berry, new leather, wild herb and pipe tobacco. The linear palate exhibits dried cherry, mocha and toasted nut set against close-grained tannins that leave a drying finish. Drink 2023–2029. (Kerin O’Keefe)
Rich, ripe mixed berries and perfumed bark on the nose. Medium-to full-bodied with some lightly firm tannin giving support to the fruit. Lacks the complexity of recent vintages, but has a promising core. Give it a while to broaden out. Try from 2024.

The E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2018 Barolo Cannubi is a lovely wine with a classic playlist of true Nebbiolo aromas. This certified organic wine exhibits wild berry, rose, dried lilac and an earthy touch of white truffle. However, the floral aromas and the lifted fruit are the protagonists in this balanced expression. Chiara farms less than one hectare (just over 6,000 square meters) in the celebrated Cannubi MGA with ancient calcareous clay soils from the Miocene era. Production is limited to 3,594 bottles. This is one of the best wines of the vintage. (Monica Larner)
Elegant and seamless for such a young red, exhibiting rose, cherry, mint, menthol and mineral flavors. Firm yet balanced and long, with echoes of cherry and menthol on the saline finish. Best from 2025 through 2042. 800 cases made, 100 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
Deep and seductive on the nose and palate with crushed red berries and a soft mineral base. Full-bodied with very silky tannins that are already melded into the wine. More linear, drinkable quality to this in 2018. From organically grown grapes. Compact and delicious even now, but better with another year in bottle. (James Suckling)
The 2018 Barolo Cannubi is soft, open-knit and gracious, as wines from this vintage tend to be. Silky contours and pliant fruit add to its appeal and overall immediacy. The 2018 is a real charmer. It’s understated personality will be easy to appreciate upon release. Sweet red cherry, cinnamon, mint, cedar and dried rose petal linger nicely, with pretty sweet floral rotes that continue to open over time. (Antonio Galloni)

A supple style, this delivers juicy black cherry, plum, tar, leather, iron and spice flavors. Broad and well-endowed, with dense tannins that exert themselves on the finish for now. This should come together nicely in about 3-5 years. Excellent length. Best from 2026 through 2043. 4,000 cases made, 3,500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2018 Barolo Pajana shows a savory character with some delicate spice and smoke that is carefully folded into dark fruit, plum and earthy flower or iris root. Fruit comes from a site in the Ginestra MGA that was planted in 1971 with additional vines added in 1991. The wine shows excellent complexity and balanced intensity that is well-suited to long cellar aging. (Monica Larner)
Rich, raspberry-coulis nose, adding mineral and bark aromas with air. But it all remains very contained. Medium-bodied palate with very fine, firm tannins and a tight finish. Super-clean with a very tight core for now. Give it time to expand. Try from 2024.

The 2018 Barolo is terrific. In 2018, the Odderos were not completely convinced of the results across all their sites. Ultimately, they blended all of their vineyard designates into the straight Barolo, with the exception of the Brunate and a Riserva from Vigna Rionda. In the glass, their 2018 is captivating. Exotic aromatics, bright red berry fruit and vibrant acids give the 2018 its considerable allure. Vineyard sites are: Fiasco, Bricco Chiesa, Capalot, Bussia, Villero, Rocche di Castiglione and Monvigliero. Look for this to be one of the under the radar gems of the vintage. I loved it. In fact, the Oddero Barolo is one of the few 2018s readers should not miss. It is a very strong ‘buy’ in my book.
A juicy, medium-bodied Barolo with clean red-fruit and some dried-walnut character. The tannins are still a little firm, so give it another year in bottle. Try from 2023.
Perfumed and supple, offering cherry, plum, earth and tar flavors. Open and relaxed, with charm and fine length. Drink now through 2032. 3,333 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)

Coming in hot off some truly excellent past releases, the Oddero 2020 Barolo has a pretty mineral content with pencil shaving, crushed stone and wet soil that meets forest berry and underbrush. The wine hits on all cylinders, and there is good aromatic balance. It delivers a punch of bright fruit and crushed rose that gives way to pulverized stone. For a base Barolo, this is one of your best buying options. Fruit is blended from Bricco Chiesa and Capalot in La Morra and Fiasco in Castiglione Falletto. (Monica Larner)
Well-rounded, juicy and fruit-forward with notes of sliced strawberries, raspberries, spiced cherries and herbs. Medium to full body with fine, firm tannins. Juicy on the palate with more strawberry character coming through. Lively and in control with a generous and charming finish. Try after 2026. (James Suckling)
The 2020 Barolo is a pretty powerful wine in this peer group. Accordingly, it is going to need a few years to come into its own. Macerated cherry, licorice, lavender, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco emerge gradually, but only with great reluctance. Hints of rose petal, mint and cinnamon linger. (Antonio Galloni)
