Il Chiosso Fara 2016 / 750 ml.

Aromas of leather, camphor and underbrush follow over to the palate together with notes of salted game and dried cherry. Firm acidity and tight close-grained tannins leave an austere, rather astringent finish.

View more wines from Piedmont

Located in northwestern Italy near the Italian Alps, Piedmont is home to two of Italy's more famous wines: Barolos and Barbarescos. Each of these wines are made with the Nebbiolo grape, which is the premier red grape in the region. Other red grapes of note used in Piedmont include Barbera and Dolcetto. Among white wine grapes used in Piedmont are Moscatos, which are increasing in popularity here in the US. Piedmont's capital city Torino is also home to large productions of Vermouth, also made from Moscato.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Intense nose of fresh and dried red berries, together with dried leaves and dark, clove-like spice. Medium-bodied with firm tannins and a concentrated bead of bright fruit and minerals. The tannins pull hard on the finish for now, so wait for this one. It’s structured and layered and definitely built to last. Hold until 2024.
RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
The Fabio Oberto 2016 Barolo showcases a shiny or glossy textural quality that is a common characteristic of Nebbiolo from this classic vintage. The wine imparts an especially smooth and silky entry to the palate. In the case of this Barolo, the aromas are a little mixed and varied with dried fruit, savory spice, musky earth, leather and a point of black truffle. There is a hint of plastic or animal that fades quickly as the wine takes in more air in the glass. (Monica Larner)

Gaja Sori Tildin 2016 / 750 ml.

2016 / 750 ml.

Item #: 94789

VN100100 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2019
The 2016 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn is a fabulous, incredibly complete wine that soars out of the glass with explosive structure and vertical lift. The tannins are very much present, but also matched beautifully by the wine’s aromatic intensity and overall drive. Dark macerated cherry, spice, leather, licorice, plum and mocha add darker shades of nuance. In 2016, Sorì Tildìn is a bit more brooding and bigger than it often is, and yet all the elements are impeccably balanced. It is quite simply a majestic wine of real grandeur and total class, but it is not obvious. Sorì Tildìn will appeal most to readers who understand what the truest essence of Nebbiolo is all about. In a word: magnificent!
JD9898 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - November 5, 2019
Coming from a warmer, south-facing site, the 2016 Barbaresco Sori Tildin is a more concentrated, vibrant wine compared to the straight Barbaresco and has vivid notes of bright cherry fruits, rose petals, road tar, violets and even a hint of orange blossom. Incredible on the palate, with medium to full body, an incredible, seamless texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a monster finish. The tannins here are unquestionably on another level and are perfectly ripe, and this just about off-the-charts 2016 has a Grand Cru Red Burgundy-like texture, elegance, and stature. This bottle didn’t hit prime time until the second day, so either give bottles a healthy decant or, even better, 5–7 years in a cold cellar. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Aug 2019
Here’s a wonderfully spicy and opulent rendition of Nebbiolo and another very full and rich Barbaresco from Gaja. The 2016 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn is open, more concentrated and structured. There are pretty floral notes of rose hip or wild rose in this generous wine of broad scope. We’re talking about smaller fruit here, with plums, cassis, blackberry and plenty of power. Everything came to perfect maturity in this 2016 vintage, representing that rare merge of quantity and quality. This is what you get from the dense soils of the warm, south-facing Sorì Tildìn site and similar ones where the terrain can keep the moisture locked in. The 2016 growing season was also marked by sharp diurnal shifts, and rainfall was well-timed to occur when it was needed most.
JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 7, 2019
Extremely perfumed aromas of dried flowers, dried strawberries and pumice, as well as tar, following through to a full body, with chewy and polished tannins and a long, juicy finish. Quite broad tannins. Dusty texture. Drink after 2021.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2020
Supple and concentrated, delivering cherry, strawberry, iron, tobacco and loamy earth flavors. Gets silkier and more graceful, playing out on the long finish. Shows excellent harmony and complexity. Best from 2022 through 2040. 175 cases imported.
WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 1/1/2020
Red berry, exotic spice and a whiff of camphor form the enticing nose. Firmly structured but loaded with finesse, the linear palate delivers crunchy red cherry, pomegranate, star anise and white pepper alongside tightly knit, noble tannins. It’s still youthfully austere but already impeccably balanced, with vibrant acidity. Drink 2023–2041.

Sandrone Vite Talin Barolo 2016 / 750 ml.

2016 / 750 ml.

Item #: 98961

RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022
This is a wine I have jealously followed since its birth. The Luciano Sandrone 2016 Barolo Vite Talin is another superstar. This is a complete wine, with depth, intensity and a fully generous and embracing personality. It’s like a warm hug. The tannins are tight and the wine needs more time to fully soften. At this young point in its life, it offers plenty of dark primary fruit, spice and black licorice. (Monica Larner)
VN9898 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2016 Barolo Vite Talin is a stunning wine, just as it always has been. Over the least few years, the 2016 has gained a measure of classicism it did not show as a young wine. The purity of the flavors, the wine’s balance, its pedigree, well, they are all off the charts. The Vite Talin emerges from two parcels with heavily virused vines that naturally produce a minuscule crop. It spent two years in 500-liter tonneaux and a year in cask. (Antonio Galloni)
WS9898 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 10/22
The grapes that produce this wine were grafted from a single vine that caught Luciano Sandrone’s attention in 1987; it was eventually proven to be a low-yielding clone of nebbiolo. He says it is almost like an extreme version of the Michet clone, with smaller berries and looser bunches that are less prone to mildew. This is the third release of Vite Talin, and while it shows the dense concentration characteristic of this wine, it also captures the freshness of the 2016 vintage in its delicate lavender scents and exhilarating acidity. Tightly wound flavors of black plum and dark cherry brim with umami savor, unfolding after a few hours in the glass to reveal notes of salted black licorice, hoisin and a brilliant streak of salinity.
JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, October 2, 2022
Wow, this is super-succulent and silky smooth with concentrated aromas of plums, berries and fresh sous-bois notes of dried leaves and flowers. A note of powdery wet stone adds another dimension. Full-bodied palate, where some bright, oaky notes add their weight, creating a well-pitched blend of still firm oak and fruit tannin that creates a measured framework for all the complex flavors. The finish is long and driven. A multifaceted Barolo that’s a joy to taste now, but still needs a few years to show its best. Try from 2025.

RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
The Francesco Rinaldi & Figli 2016 Barolo shows sweet and ripe fruit with distant aromas of wild strawberry, forest berry and a hint of dried prune. The standard blending formula for this classic Barolo sees fruit from six vineyard parcels, including some from the celebrated Cannubi cru that is most strongly identified with this estate. This vintage awards some added softness and fruitiness that goes a long way to create a long and silky mouthfeel.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2020
The 2016 Barolo is a terrific choice for readers looking for a wine that can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. Bright, floral and nicely lifted, the 2016 is decidedly airy in build. There is lovely vivacity to the flavors, but my overall impression is of a relatively light Barolo that is best suited to near and medium-term drinking.
VN90+90–92 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
The 2016 Barolo is gracious and lifted, with lovely sweet red cherry and floral overtones. Silky tannins give this mid-weight Barolo a good bit of immediacy. Translucent and super-expressive, the 2016 is a model of pure and total class. Vineyard sites are a stellar collection of parcels from Rocche dell’Annunziata, Boiolo, Sarmassa, Vignane, Codana and a touch of Cannubi. In recent years, Rinaldi’s straight Barolo has been one of the real under the radar gems in the region. The 2016 has the potential to be an overachiever.

RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
The E Pira-Chiara Boschis 2016 Barolo Mosconi is a little wider and richer compared to the Cannubi, with bigger fruit, more sweetness, spice, grilled oregano and a touch of crushed hazelnut. Despite the wide net of aromas offered on the bouquet, this wine shows a very sharp and focused approach with elegantly linear tannins and matching acidity. There is a lifted quality to both the nose and the mouthfeel that gives this wine beautiful momentum and length. Mosconi is one of the headline vineyards of Monforte d’Alba.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
The 2016 Barolo Mosconi is a gorgeous wine made all the more remarkable given that Mosconi can’t really be said to be a top-level site. Dark and imposing, the 2016 captures all the breadth and tannic clout that are such signatures of this site. This is an especially brooding, virile Barolo, but Chiara and Giorgio Boschis clearly brought out all the best the vineyard had to give.
