Item#: 99994
Rich and round, this red reveals a powerful structure, with lively acidity and dusty tannins shoring up cherry, strawberry, hay, eucalyptus, iron and tobacco flavors. Leans toward the tannins in the balance today, yet shows excellent potential for the future. Best from 2027 through 2047. 275 cases made, 83 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
Moving to the 2019 Barolo Conca, this riper Barolo offers luxurious notes of candied licorice, cedar, and black cherry. Full-bodied and round, it has ripe and meaty tannins as well as earthier notes of black truffle and forest floor. Though it sees a proportion of new oak, it is integrated and wears it well. Drink 2024–2032. (Audrey Frick)
The 2019 Barolo Cortea is warm and resonant in the glass, with all of the richness this south-facing side confers. Dark macerated cherry, spice, leather, menthol and mocha infuse the Conca with tons of depth. Although not super-complex, the Conca is outright delicious. (Antonio Galloni)

Where It's From
Region / Piedmont
Located in northwestern Italy near the Italian Alps, Piedmont is home to two of Italy's more famous wines: Barolos and Barbarescos. Each of these wines are made with the Nebbiolo grape, which is the premier red grape in the region. Other red grapes of note used in Piedmont include Barbera and Dolcetto. Among white wine grapes used in Piedmont are Moscatos, which are increasing in popularity here in the US. Piedmont's capital city Torino is also home to large productions of Vermouth, also made from Moscato.
Country / Italy
Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.
Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

2019 / 750 ml.
Bright and well-delineated, exuding cherry, strawberry, rose and earth flavors. Turns firm and tightly wound from midpalate through the finish, showing the austerity of the vintage. There is plenty here, but this just needs time. Best from 2026 through 2045. 3,900 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)
Plenty of dried flowers with spices such as cloves and dried lavender. Strawberry and orange peel. Medium-bodied with firm and racy tannins and a fresh and firm finish. A little tight and lean. Should soften and open with time. Better in 2026. (James Suckling)

This wine plays the role of the classic Barolo release, or the “annata” (vintage) wine if you prefer. With the white label, the Parusso 2019 Barolo Perarmando is dedicated to the man who founded this family-run estate in 1971. Armando’s blend (with fruit from Bussia, Mosconi and Mariondino) shows some of the tighter or more astringent aromas that come from the stems and the skins of the Nebbiolo grape. You also get a lot of the pulpiness too with bold cherry and dried blackberry aromas. Those come on the heels of grilled herb and dark licorice. This is a production of 25,000 bottles annually. (Monica Larner)
Tar and roses with some dried rose stem and strawberries on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied with growing tannins and a chewy finish. Fresh at the end. Drink after 2026. (James Suckling)
This red exudes eucalyptus, pine, juniper and toasty oak flavors. The fruit component takes a back seat, yet this feels supple until the firm grip emerges on the finish. Best from 2027 through 2043. 2,040 cases made, 500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

More citrus character emerges from the 2019 Barolo Via Nuova, which is lifted, elegant, and fresh with orange peel. On the palate, it has outstanding energy, with finely coiled tannins, more linear drive, and refreshing energy in its notes of pomegranate, raspberry, and crushed stones. I love this wine now, and it will be fantastic over the coming decades. (Audrey Frick)
The 2019 Barolo Via Nuova is a blend of fruit from various sites across multiple villages in the appellation. The wine is immediately open and beautiful, showing dark fruit, cherry, spice, blue flower and potting soils. The healthy fruit in this vintage shows an almost crunchy quality. With climate changes and weather patterns that are becoming increasingly tropical in nature, hail storms are a reoccurring threat. In recent times, they have been especially violent in the village of La Morra. Chiara Boschis installed hail nets in her vineyards seven years ago. (Monica Larner)
The 2019 Barolo Via Nuova is another gorgeous wine in this tasting. Soaring and broad in its aromatic intensity, the 2019 has it all. The blend of seven sites works so well. Readers will find a seamless, wonderfully complete Barolo. Dried flowers, herbs, mint, rose petal, kirsch and orange zest lend notable complexity throughout. The 2019 is deep and also quite rich, but not at all heavy. There is a touch of oak sweetness, but it just adds to the wine’s exotic beauty. (Antonio Galloni)
Packed with cherry and raspberry flavors, this red is both supple and firmly structured. Reveals earth, mineral, eucalyptus and anise notes that add depth, while the muscular tannins take over on the finish for now. Shows fine potential. Best from 2027 through 2047. 375 cases made, 113 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Aromatic, this red exudes scents of rose and cherry combined with flavors of white pepper, all allied to a linear structure. Balanced, with lingering traces of fruit, spice and chalky mineral on the finish. Best from 2025 through 2040. 250 cases made, 90 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
Aromas of roses, tar and dried strawberries with hints of citrus and rust. Medium body. Firm and slightly austere tannins, but they will soften with time. Try after 2024. (James Suckling)

This wine is a vintage car. Elegant and sleek, a design that fits the modern world, thought its a classic. A power that lurks underneath the hood that when let lose, cannot be bottled again. This is a wine of beauty, depth and power. Dark cherries and plums laced with sweet and tangy spices evolve into blue violets and wild herbs. The palate is rich and giving, with warmed fruit compotes that are hemmed in by vibrant acidity and the most elegant tannins that feel like the perfect leather seat as you prepare to start the engine. Drink Now until there is no more. (Jeff Porter)
Vivid medium ruby color. The wine is finely tuned, with sweet violets, leafy lightness and red currants. Medium-bodied on the palate with violet notes, velvety tannins, refreshing acidity and a long, crisp finish. There is sternness here but personality. Will need time to evolve. (James Suckling)
The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is redolent of dark fruit, crushed rocks, graphite, sage, menthol and lavender all race across the palate, supported by bracing, young Rabajà tannins that make themselves felt. This mid-weight, powerhouse Barbaresco packs quite a punch. (Antonio Galloni)

Cerretta is one of my favorite sites in Serralunga d’Alba because it consists of vines wrapped around a hilltop with various exposures. For that reason, Cerretta wines can vary widely from producer to producer. The Azelia 2019 Barolo Cerretta has dark fruit and spice, but the bouquet is mostly colored by flinty mineral tones, smoke and pencil shaving. It offers terrific balance and also manages some softly perfumed notes of violet and blue flower that you don’t get in the other wines. It sees 50 days of extended maceration and 30 months of aging in large oak casks. This is a very limited production of 3,200 bottles. (Monica Larner)
Perfumed with sliced raspberries, violets and strawberries as well as hints of orange. It’s medium-bodied with firm and fresh tannins that are chewy. Bright acidity. Energetic wine. Drink after 2027. (James Suckling)
A lean, sinewy style, this red suggests cherry and strawberry fruit shaded by mint, cumin and tar accents. Though energetic, the finish is currently dominated by dense tannins. Requires patience. Best from 2027 through 2045. 400 cases made, 120 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2019 Barolo Baudana is absolutely captivating. Effusive and bright in the glass, with tons of freshness and remarkable fruit purity, the Baudana offers up generous dark red fruit, spice, leather, kirsch, hard candy, cedar, tobacco and underbrush. There’s terrific depth here and exceptional balance, too. Rose petal, white pepper and chalk lift the high-toned, intensely saline finish. (Antonio Galloni)
Cherry, raspberry liqueur, mint and mineral flavors highlight this taut, dense red, which is balanced, with eucalyptus and juniper notes chiming in on the protracted finish. Best from 2026 through 2045. 570 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)

Beautiful aromas of plums and violets with some flint. Full-bodied. Layered and softly chewy. Meat, berry and hints of cedar and nutmeg. Flavorful finish. Solid and very together with a softness at the back of the palate. Drink in 2026 and beyond.
A powerful red, yet well-defined too, with strawberry, cherry, floral, mineral and tobacco aromas and flavors aligned to a muscular structure. Feels balanced overall, yet will take a few years to fully integrate. Best from 2026 through 2045. 580 cases made, 45 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
The La Spinetta 2019 Barbaresco Starderi Vürsù is perfumed and bright with dark rose and wild plum. The wine is solid and dense, with a pretty presentation of fruit that feels healthy and crunchy at the same time. The tannins are well integrated into this structured, full-bodied Barbaresco. The Starderi has shown a very consistent performance over the years. These releases from La Spinetta are all packaged in big, heavy glass bottles. (Monica Larner)

The 2019 Barolo is a classy entry-level offering from Borgogno. Sweet dried cherry, orange peel, cinnamon, incense and star anise are beautifully delineated in the soaring, expressive bouquet. Finely cut and translucent, the straight Barolo is an absolute delight. Reads who can find it should not hesitate. (Antonio Galloni)

Notes of fresh cherries, dried lavender, gunpowder and crushed stones. Medium-bodied, vivid and crunchy with a compact and viscous tannin structure. Yet it’s polished and refined with floral and mineral undertones in the finish. Try after 2026. (James Suckling)
A sleek red, with cherry, menthol, juniper, mineral, tar and tobacco flavors riding the vibrant structure. Balanced, with refined tannins lingering with fruit and underbrush elements on the finish. Best from 2026 through 2040. 1,600 cases made, 480 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
Dark mineral aromas exude from the 2019 Barolo, with notes of pencil shavings, currant, and fresh leather. This medium to full-bodied red offers more clarity and lift on the palate, with ripe red cherry, bergamot, and clove spices, ripe though present tannins, and refreshing acidity. It has a good and savory finish, with the potential to be solid drinking over the next 6–8 years. (Audrey Frick)
