Conterno Barolo Arione 2018 / 750 ml.

Item#: 98969

JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023
There is surprising depth for the vintage in the 2018 Barolo Arione, with licorice, black truffle, violet, and cherry lozenge. Medium to full-bodied, with fleshy cherry fruit, it is long and luxurious on the palate, with fine tannins and a velvety mouthfeel. A fantastic wine from Roberto Conterno, it is an outstanding wine to drink right now or over the coming 20 years. (Audrey Frick)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2023
Perfumed and suave, this red boasts cherry, strawberry, sandalwood, floral and mint aromas and flavors. This one is all about finesse and harmony, with its precision and balance providing a sense of seamlessness -- even at this youthful stage. The fruit, spice and savory elements linger on the aftertaste. Best from 2025 through 2043. 833 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2018 Barolo Arione is an imposing wine. It’s presence alone is impossible to miss. Arione is a wine that demands attention. There is something wild and exotic—almost animalistic—about the Arione and the way it asserts itself. Time in the glass brings out scents of sage, menthol, white pepper and orange peel. A generous kick of Serralunga acidity and tannin punctuates the finish. It’s still early days for Roberto Conterno’s Barolo from Arione. I can’t wait to see how this ages. (Antonio Galloni)
RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2021
Tasted from barrel, the 2018 Barolo Arione still has another year in botte and time in bottle before its commercial release. However, the wine shows a distinct personality that is immediately gentle and open-knit despite its very young age. With fruit from Serralunga d’Alba, there is ethereal softness here, but this characterization is relative considering the ample power and depth always associated with this site. It feels like this 2018 vintage is still warming up and is slowly putting on volume and weight. Its metamorphosis is far from complete. However, what you can read into the wine now is the quality of its fruit and its classic Nebbiolo aromas of wild berry, pressed violet, rust and blood orange. (Monica Larner)

Located in northwestern Italy near the Italian Alps, Piedmont is home to two of Italy's more famous wines: Barolos and Barbarescos. Each of these wines are made with the Nebbiolo grape, which is the premier red grape in the region. Other red grapes of note used in Piedmont include Barbera and Dolcetto. Among white wine grapes used in Piedmont are Moscatos, which are increasing in popularity here in the US. Piedmont's capital city Torino is also home to large productions of Vermouth, also made from Moscato.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022
This pretty bottle boasts a new label design with simple graphics and a slightly retro personality. Due to the difficult growing season, no single-vineyard wines were made in 2018. Instead, fruit was bended here. The Ascheri 2018 Barolo is a classic interpretation of Nebbiolo (representing an assembly of fruit from La Morra, Verduno and Serralunga d’Alba) with an immediately compelling bouquet that reveals a good amount of complexity and some unexpected notes of dried flower and orange peel at the back of wild cherry and redcurrant. This vintage opens quickly (uncork it a few hours before without decanting) and has the upfront consistency and balance to enjoy in the medium term. The finish is also slightly shorter and leaner in this edition. Production is an ample 42,500 bottles. (Monica Larner)

The shy nose offers whiffs of violet, damp underbrush, leather and camphor. The palate has an earthy, almost rustic charm, offering truffle, black olive, botanical herb and Morello cherry before finishing on notes recalling salted game. Tight, dusty tannins leave a drying finish. (Kerin O’Keefe)

Paolo Scavino Barolo 2018 / 750 ml.

Item #: 99251

WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2022
Heady aromas of wild berry, blue flower and graphite lift out of the glass on this fantastic red along with a hint of menthol. Full-bodied, smooth and delicious, the polished palate delivers juicy Morello cherry, raspberry compote and star anise before closing on a notes of white pepper and savory, almost salty mineral. Taut but seamlessly integrated tannins give it a smooth texture. (Kerin O’Keefe)
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, October 2, 2022
Vivid aromas of red berries and roses follow though to a medium-bodied palate, where fine tannins provide a lightly firm bed for fresh fruit. The lighter, brighter style of this is true to the character of the vintage, but here it’s been well-handled. All in balance. Try from 2024.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022
The Paolo Scavino 2018 Barolo is a pretty wine with sweet primary intensity that appears as tart cherry and dried raspberry. With Enrico Scavino’s signature on the front label, this is a classic package with silky tannins and a long, polished mouthfeel. Fruit comes from multiple vineyard sites across the appellation, and an ample 38,000 bottles were made. (Monica Larner)
WS9191 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 12/22
Scavino’s Barolo classico brings together nebbiolo from seven different MGAs and unfolds with red-cherry flavors that are pleasantly crunchy and tangy, enlivened by notes of orange peel. Hints of mocha and rhubarb emerge with time in the glass, and the polished tannins are already well integrated, giving the wine an immediate appeal.

Oddero Barolo Brunate 2018 / 750 ml.

2018 / 750 ml.

Item #: 98264

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Aug 2022
Always a standout wine, the Oddero 2018 Barolo Brunate is a complete wine, and I use that word specifically because it shows balance, freshness, length and structure. It has all the basics of an age-worthy Nebbiolo that promises to increase in complexity and depth with more cellar age. At this young stage, the bouquet is singing with dark fruit, cherry, spice and sweet earth. (Monica Larner)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
What a delight it is to taste Oddero’s 2018 Barolo Brunate. A glorious wine, the Oddero Brunate is one of the very few wines in this vintage that possesses real mid-palate depth and notable textural intensity. It is the smallest production wine here. I imagine that the slightly smaller cask used for this wine was an advantage in giving the 2018 a bit of extra flesh that is missing in this vintage. What impresses me most about the 2018, though, is its freshness and the primary intensity of the fruit. Iron, smoke, tobacco, dried herbs, chalk and a whole range of savory accents develop over time, rounding things out in style. What a wine! (Antonio Galloni)
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2023
Pouring a jeweled ruby, the 2018 Barolo Brunate needs some air on opening before revealing significant depth and balance for this cooler and wet vintage, with notes of balsamic herbs, black raspberry, and mineral earth. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins, pure red cherry fruit fills the palate, and the wine has a long floral finish with rose petals and a stony texture. It is deserving of at least another year in the cellar. Drink 2024–2040. (Audrey Frick)
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2022
Camphor, violet, oak-driven spice and woodland berry aromas shape the nose. Lithe and polished, the full-bodied palate offers ripe Morello cherry, coconut, vanilla and star anise set against fine-grained tannins that leave a drying close. (Kerin O’Keefe)

RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 11th Aug 2022
The Bovio 2018 Barolo (with fruit from La Morra and Castiglione Falletto) delivers a very bright and lifted bouquet with cassis, wild fruit and hints of dried apricot or apple skin. I love the intensity and inner drive of this classic Barolo. The wine offers good freshness and silky tannins over a mid-weight approach. This wine is also quite immediate and ready to drink in the near or medium term. (Monica Larner)
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, October 2, 2022
Chunky, ripe berries on the nose and palate, colored by thick, spicy notes that combine with the lightly firm tannins to give a plump, velvety texture on the full-bodied palate. Ends with a chocolate-cherry, almost liqueur-like note. Good concentration for 2018. Works well. Fun to try now, but hold for a year for better integration.

RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022
The E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2018 Barolo Cannubi is a lovely wine with a classic playlist of true Nebbiolo aromas. This certified organic wine exhibits wild berry, rose, dried lilac and an earthy touch of white truffle. However, the floral aromas and the lifted fruit are the protagonists in this balanced expression. Chiara farms less than one hectare (just over 6,000 square meters) in the celebrated Cannubi MGA with ancient calcareous clay soils from the Miocene era. Production is limited to 3,594 bottles. This is one of the best wines of the vintage. (Monica Larner)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2022
Elegant and seamless for such a young red, exhibiting rose, cherry, mint, menthol and mineral flavors. Firm yet balanced and long, with echoes of cherry and menthol on the saline finish. Best from 2025 through 2042. 800 cases made, 100 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, October 2, 2022
Deep and seductive on the nose and palate with crushed red berries and a soft mineral base. Full-bodied with very silky tannins that are already melded into the wine. More linear, drinkable quality to this in 2018. From organically grown grapes. Compact and delicious even now, but better with another year in bottle. (James Suckling)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2018 Barolo Cannubi is soft, open-knit and gracious, as wines from this vintage tend to be. Silky contours and pliant fruit add to its appeal and overall immediacy. The 2018 is a real charmer. It’s understated personality will be easy to appreciate upon release. Sweet red cherry, cinnamon, mint, cedar and dried rose petal linger nicely, with pretty sweet floral rotes that continue to open over time. (Antonio Galloni)

Conterno Barolo Francia 2017 / 750 ml.

2017 / 750 ml.

Item #: 96527

VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2021
The 2017 Barolo Francia is dense, rich and explosive right out of the gate. There is virtually no feeling of tannin, as the creaminess of the fruit is so expansive. Bright red cherry fruit, blood orange, kirsch, sage and menthol gradually appear as the 2017 starts to open in the glass. In 2017, Francia is decidedly exotic, not to mention such a thrill to taste.

Conterno Barolo Francia 2018 / 750 ml.

2018 / 750 ml.

Item #: 98952

VN95+95+ pts. - Vinous - Oct 2022
The 2018 Barolo Francia is powerful, deep and also a touch austere. It shows the edginess of all the 2018s, but also has a feeling of textural creaminess that adds tons of character. Spice, menthol, leather and a whole range of balsamic overtones build into the deep, imposing finish. Roberto Conterno decided to forego his Barolo Monfortino in 2018, opting instead to blend all the casks into his Francia bottling. When that happens, Francia often surprises down the road. That could very well turn out to be the case here. (Antonio Galloni)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2012
Offers depth and power, with menthol and wild herbs shading cherry and plum flavors. The balance tips toward the tannins in the end, yet this doesn’t feel overly astringent, just more structured than many wines of the vintage. Picks up a mineral element as this lingers on the finish. Needs time. Best from 2025 through 2043. 2,167 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)
RP94+94–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2021
Of the three Barolo samples I tasted from barrel (including Arione and Cerretta, which are also from Serralunga d’Alba), the Giacomo Conterno 2018 Barolo Francia was the furthest behind and the hardest to pin down at this stage in its infancy. I have opened my range of scores accordingly to compensate for the magical unknowns that are likely to occur as the wine moves toward greater harmony and integration before its commercial release. The wine is linear and pointedly focused, lacking the width and volume it will gain when given more time to flesh out and relax. The aromas are also quite primary and simple at this point, with dark cherry and even a hint of ripe strawberry ceding gradually to grilled herb, blue flower and baked brick. This vintage of Barolo Francia will require patience. (Monica Larner)
