View more wines from Piedmont

Located in northwestern Italy near the Italian Alps, Piedmont is home to two of Italy's more famous wines: Barolos and Barbarescos. Each of these wines are made with the Nebbiolo grape, which is the premier red grape in the region. Other red grapes of note used in Piedmont include Barbera and Dolcetto. Among white wine grapes used in Piedmont are Moscatos, which are increasing in popularity here in the US. Piedmont's capital city Torino is also home to large productions of Vermouth, also made from Moscato.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

This wine plays the role of the classic Barolo release, or the “annata” (vintage) wine if you prefer. With the white label, the Parusso 2019 Barolo Perarmando is dedicated to the man who founded this family-run estate in 1971. Armando’s blend (with fruit from Bussia, Mosconi and Mariondino) shows some of the tighter or more astringent aromas that come from the stems and the skins of the Nebbiolo grape. You also get a lot of the pulpiness too with bold cherry and dried blackberry aromas. Those come on the heels of grilled herb and dark licorice. This is a production of 25,000 bottles annually. (Monica Larner)

Tar and roses with some dried rose stem and strawberries on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied with growing tannins and a chewy finish. Fresh at the end. Drink after 2026. (James Suckling)

This red exudes eucalyptus, pine, juniper and toasty oak flavors. The fruit component takes a back seat, yet this feels supple until the firm grip emerges on the finish. Best from 2027 through 2043. 2,040 cases made, 500 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

A velvety and delicious Barbaresco with chocolate, coffee and blackberry aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied with layers of ripe tannins and a long and juicy finish. Reserved at the finish. This needs time to open. Better after 2024. (James Suckling)

With 15,493 bottles produced with fruit selected across this celebrated MGA, the Paitin 2019 Barbaresco Serraboella reaches a perfect pitch between fruit ripeness and acidity. This exacting balance is a hallmark of the vintage. The house style, on the other hand, is focused on elegance, so you really get quite a beautiful drinking experience with this bottle. Red and purple fruits segue to wild rose and red licorice. (Monica Larner)

Delivers a whiff of grilled beef that gives way to flavors of cherry, raspberry, rose hip and mineral. Compact, even austere, as assertive tannins emerge on the resonant finish. Best from 2026 through 2045. 6,500 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2019 Barolo Albe is a nuanced, understated wine, but it is also a rare Albe that needs time in bottle. Sweet floral and spice notes open first, leading to an attractive core of Nebbiolo fruit. Gentle and understated, with lovely precision, the 2019 Albe is a hushed wine that is more about energy than size. I have seen the Albe really blossom with a few years in bottle. I expect that will be the case here as well given its super-classic feel. (Antonio Galloni)

With fruit from Castiglione Falletto, the Bovio 2019 Barolo Parussi has a sharpness and a bright linearity that is specific to this village (home to some of the most age-worthy Nebbiolo-based wines). That sharpness is made with tart fruit, wild cherry, crushed mineral and iron ore. The wine offers pretty complexity and length, and it remains feather light on the palate. (Monica Larner)

The 2019 Barolo Prapò (with fruit from Serralunga d’Alba) is a rich and amply fleshed-out wine with dark fruit aromas, plenty of spice and dried rose, along with grilled rosemary and cola. You also get that reddish, metallic earthy note that appears so frequently in wines from this part of the appellation. The finish is medium-rich and fresh. Some 9,000 bottles were made. (Monica Larner)

A solidly built red, with pure cherry and strawberry fruit flavors complemented by iron, eucalyptus and oak spices. Turns firm yet remains elegant on the finish, where the fruit yields to spice accents. Best from 2026 through 2043. 500 cases made, 180 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Packs a core of cherry and berry fruit shaded by leather, eucalyptus and warm spices. Rich and dense, with youthful reticence. Balanced, with a long finish that flexes the tannins now. Shows great potential, thanks to its ripe fruit, complexity and harmony. Best from 2027 through 2047. 600 cases made, 180 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The Conterno Fantino 2019 Barolo Mosconi Vigna Ped (with 6,250 bottles made) is perhaps more floral, with plenty of rose, and fruity, with lots of cherry, compared to the other new releases in this portfolio. This Barolo is very lively and bright thanks to the lifted quality of its primary fruit. The style is a little more immediate, but this wine delivers lots of satisfying Nebbiolo typicity nonetheless. The tannins show an elegant, dusty side. (Monica Larner)

The 2019 Barolo has a pretty bouquet that is laced with light fruit, licorice and lots of blue flower. On the palate, the wine is mid-weight and lively. This is a nice expression of classic Nebbiolo that shows depth and elegance. It ferments with ambient yeasts and sees 40 days of extended maceration with submerged cap. This 29,400-bottle production represents a blend of fruit from seven sites: Altenasso and Solanotto in Castiglione Falletto, a part of Cerretta, the younger part of Bricco Voghera where the vines are from 55 to 60 years old, part of San Rocco, and Cerrati and Broglio in Serralunga d’Alba. (Monica Larner)

RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 24th Aug 2023
The 2019 Barolo Le Vigne is a historic blend of fruit from Baudana in Serralunga d’Alba, Villero in Castiglione Falletto, Vignane in Barolo and Merli in Novello. This year, a fifth site was added to the final blend. It is the Le Coste MGA in Barolo with south-facing exposures and 45-year-old vines in a two-hectare parcel. The backbone of this wine is Baudana, and Merli adds freshness. The wine needs more time in bottle, but already it proves generous and bold with dark fruit, spice and crushed mineral. (Monica Larner)
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2023
The 2019 Barolo Le Vigne is pure and total seduction. Kirsch, sweet pipe tobacco, mint, cedar, dried herbs and orange peel all grace a Le Vigne built on mid-weight structure and energy. There is a feeling of youthful classicism and austerity that is so beguiling. Readers should plan on being patient, though. The 2019 won’t be ready to drink anytime soon, but there is enough fruit to make me think it will be superb, in time. (Antonio Galloni)

A tightly wound red, with floral, cherry, iron, earth and underbrush aromas and flavors. Beefy, with the vintage's characteristic austerity and a strong grip on the finish. The tannins lend a compact feel in the end, yet this stretches out on the finish, with a core of pure fruit. Best from 2027 through 2047. 1,500 cases made, 350 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Packed tight with ripe and dark cherry fruit, the effect of the Carlo Giacosa 2018 Barbera d’Alba Superiore Lina is a bit monotone, but like any good Barbera, what you are looking for is fruit intensity and freshness for a nice pasta dinner and plenty of cheese. This wine offers balanced acidity and an easy-drinking approach. About 2,830 bottles were released.
