Cantina Produttori Nebbiolo di Carema Carema Classico 2017 / 750 ml.

Item#: 90494

The 2017 Carema is an attractive wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Sweet dried cherry, mint, tobacco, spice and worn-in leather are all typical of a wine that is heading into maturity. Even so, this mid-weight, gracious Carema has plenty to offer, especially for readers who enjoy wines with a bit of tertiary complexity. (Antonio Galloni)

Region / Piedmont

View more wines from Piedmont

Located in northwestern Italy near the Italian Alps, Piedmont is home to two of Italy's more famous wines: Barolos and Barbarescos. Each of these wines are made with the Nebbiolo grape, which is the premier red grape in the region. Other red grapes of note used in Piedmont include Barbera and Dolcetto. Among white wine grapes used in Piedmont are Moscatos, which are increasing in popularity here in the US. Piedmont's capital city Torino is also home to large productions of Vermouth, also made from Moscato.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Give it a few swirls in the glass to bring out the pretty ripe red berries and tinges of rose petals and dried cherries. Medium body with clean, spicy red-fruit flavors, lightly firm tannins and a fresh finish. Almost racy. Nice to drink now, but another year will pull it all together. Drink from 2022. (James Suckling)

The 2017 Barolo is noted by aromas of red cherry, tar, and menthol. The palate is fresh up front with red plum and moves into more savory, iron-rich mineral tones and bitter herbs, with building structure. A solid and classic entry Barolo from the Sordo estate to be enjoyed over the next 10–15 years, drink 2022–2036. (Audrey Frick)

A round red, this evokes cherry, plum, leather and menthol before the burly tannins put a grip on the finish. This is a bit jumbled now between beginning and end, so give it some time. Best from 2024 through 2038. 25,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The Sordo 2017 Barolo exhibits a thin color and appearance with bright ruby highlights. This wine is full of good surprises, starting off with the purity and focus of the bouquet that surprisingly beats the 2016 vintage, in my opinion. Wild berry and dried raspberry cede to spicy licorice and smoky tar. The tannins are quite tight, and there is a lasting point of astringency that may never fully fade. The bouquet is more integrated than the palate at this stage. An ample 150,000 bottles were produced. (Monica Larner)

Cherry and plum fruit flavors are accented by vanilla, toast, hay, white pepper and tar notes in this expressive, solidly built Barolo, which is fluid, with a dense matrix of tannins shoring up the long finish, showing fine complexity, balance and length. Best from 2025 through 2048. 800 cases made, 320 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2017 Barolo Mosconi is a powerful, brooding wine. Black cherry, gravel, dried herbs, scorched earth, spice and leather add to an impression of gravitas. This is an especially somber, potent Barolo that needs time to soften. Even so, it will always be a brute. The substantial finish is a thing of beauty. The Barolo Mosconi emerges from the estates oldest vines, which are 70–80 years old, and is aged in barrique.

Very fresh, sweet raspberries with some floral undertones follow through to a full body with fine, creamy tannins that flow long and linear through the middle of the palate. From organically grown grapes. Best after 2024.

The 2017 Barolo Monprivato is elegant, classy and nuanced. Crushed red berry fruit, spice and blood orange lend and exotic flair to this silky, mid-weight Barolo. The 2017 loses some of its persistence with air, but it offers tons of immediacy and sheer allure. Best of all, the 2017 will drink well with minimal cellaring. This is one of the better recent vintages of Monprivato the Mascarello family has released.

Offers a bright, pure expression of cherry, strawberry, rose and grassy aromas and flavors underscored by a vein of minerality, with tannins that flex their muscles on the long finish. Intense but balanced, with tension that bodes well for future evolution. Best from 2026 through 2043. 1,388 cases made, 350 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota plays some of its best cards in terms of texture, offering silky tannins, firmness and a long-lasting veil of fruit flavors. Cassis, wild cherry, camphor ash, spice and iron ore are aromatic protagonists. This wine is lean and compact but very linear and focused. Like the other Riservas in this group of new releases, the wine is fermented in steel and aged in large oak casks for 32 months. 10,000 bottles were produced.

A medium-bodied, lightly chewy red, with fragrant notes of subtle spice and dried berry, primarily defined by a streak of stone- and smoke-laced minerality. Drink now through 2023. 600 cases made, 100 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)
