Item#: 958
A taut red, with hay and grass aromas giving way to cherry, strawberry, earth and iron flavors. This has all the components in the right place, with a firm structure and lightly astringent finish. Shows fine harmony and length. Best from 2026 through 2042. 3,350 cases made, 800 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
With a really fun retro-looking label, the Ascheri 2019 Barolo shows a classic playlist of Nebbiolo aromas with redcurrant, iris, rusty nail and licorice. The wine sits well on the palate, even at this young stage, thanks to fresh acidity and integrated tannins. This is a good-looking bottle for near and medium-term consumption. Fruit is blended from La Morra, Verduno and Serralunga d’Alba. Some 38,500 bottles were made. (Monica Larner)

Where It's From
Region / Piedmont
Located in northwestern Italy near the Italian Alps, Piedmont is home to two of Italy's more famous wines: Barolos and Barbarescos. Each of these wines are made with the Nebbiolo grape, which is the premier red grape in the region. Other red grapes of note used in Piedmont include Barbera and Dolcetto. Among white wine grapes used in Piedmont are Moscatos, which are increasing in popularity here in the US. Piedmont's capital city Torino is also home to large productions of Vermouth, also made from Moscato.
Country / Italy
Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.
Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Fresh and vibrant with red berry, blood orange, crushed hazelnut, hibiscus and spice aromas and flavors. Medium- to full-bodied, tense and linear with a backbone of firm, finely grained tannins and steady minerality. Needs some time. Try after 2027. (James Suckling)
The Conterno Fantino 2019 Barolo Castelletto Vigna Pressenda is medium dark and more concentrated compared to many of its peers. This wine shows a solid bouquet with fixed aromas of wild cherry, long-stemmed rose and candied orange. With time, even more floral aromas are coaxed forward from the bouquet. Beyond those are oak-driven notes of allspice and cinnamon. The tannins are polished, and the wine offers quite a bit of fruit texture. Production is 6,600 bottles. (Monica Larner)
Presents cherry, raspberry, sun-kissed hay, mineral and spice aromas and flavors that curl around an acidic spine and tannins. This has all the right components, matched to a slim, taut frame, with fine length. Best from 2026 through 2043. 600 cases made, 180 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

This wine is a vintage car. Elegant and sleek, a design that fits the modern world, thought its a classic. A power that lurks underneath the hood that when let lose, cannot be bottled again. This is a wine of beauty, depth and power. Dark cherries and plums laced with sweet and tangy spices evolve into blue violets and wild herbs. The palate is rich and giving, with warmed fruit compotes that are hemmed in by vibrant acidity and the most elegant tannins that feel like the perfect leather seat as you prepare to start the engine. Drink Now until there is no more. (Jeff Porter)
Vivid medium ruby color. The wine is finely tuned, with sweet violets, leafy lightness and red currants. Medium-bodied on the palate with violet notes, velvety tannins, refreshing acidity and a long, crisp finish. There is sternness here but personality. Will need time to evolve. (James Suckling)
The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is redolent of dark fruit, crushed rocks, graphite, sage, menthol and lavender all race across the palate, supported by bracing, young Rabajà tannins that make themselves felt. This mid-weight, powerhouse Barbaresco packs quite a punch. (Antonio Galloni)

A velvety and delicious Barbaresco with chocolate, coffee and blackberry aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied with layers of ripe tannins and a long and juicy finish. Reserved at the finish. This needs time to open. Better after 2024. (James Suckling)
With 15,493 bottles produced with fruit selected across this celebrated MGA, the Paitin 2019 Barbaresco Serraboella reaches a perfect pitch between fruit ripeness and acidity. This exacting balance is a hallmark of the vintage. The house style, on the other hand, is focused on elegance, so you really get quite a beautiful drinking experience with this bottle. Red and purple fruits segue to wild rose and red licorice. (Monica Larner)

Delivers a whiff of grilled beef that gives way to flavors of cherry, raspberry, rose hip and mineral. Compact, even austere, as assertive tannins emerge on the resonant finish. Best from 2026 through 2045. 6,500 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)
The 2019 Barolo Albe is a nuanced, understated wine, but it is also a rare Albe that needs time in bottle. Sweet floral and spice notes open first, leading to an attractive core of Nebbiolo fruit. Gentle and understated, with lovely precision, the 2019 Albe is a hushed wine that is more about energy than size. I have seen the Albe really blossom with a few years in bottle. I expect that will be the case here as well given its super-classic feel. (Antonio Galloni)

Bright and well-delineated, exuding cherry, strawberry, rose and earth flavors. Turns firm and tightly wound from midpalate through the finish, showing the austerity of the vintage. There is plenty here, but this just needs time. Best from 2026 through 2045. 3,900 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)
Plenty of dried flowers with spices such as cloves and dried lavender. Strawberry and orange peel. Medium-bodied with firm and racy tannins and a fresh and firm finish. A little tight and lean. Should soften and open with time. Better in 2026. (James Suckling)

The 2019 Barolo Cannubi is another super-classic Barolo from Rinaldi. It offers a combination of Cannubi finesse and old-school power that is striking. Crushed flowers, mint, cedar, white pepper, leather and pine lend notable aromatic brilliance. Beneath it all lies a serious core of fruit, acid and tannin. Readers should be in no rush here. (Antonio Galloni)
The 2019 Barolo Cannubi has a lovely spicy, almost exotic quality with tart cherry fruit and nicely balanced campfire ash, tar and licorice root. You get the elegant nuances of Cannubi presented with extra intensity and richness in the 2019 vintage. The finish has sweet fruit, silky tannins and an open-knit approach. The wine is aged in large oak casks for 36 months, and 10,000 bottles were created. (Monica Larner)
Red plums, dark cherries, dried orange peel, rose hips and red spices. Medium- to full-bodied and a little chewy with velvety, slightly powdery tannins. Fresh, red-fruited character with a chalky texture in the finish. Try after 2025. (James Suckling)

The 2019 Barolo Aleste is another stellar wine from Sandrone. Like Le Vigne, the Aleste is a tightly wound ball of energy. Dark cherry, mocha, plum, licorice and lavender all race across the palate. This racy, but youthfully austere Barolo has a ton to offer. There’s more density and a darker profile than in the Le Vigne, sort of like a soloist to Le Vigne’s orchestra. (Antonio Galloni)
Aleste is a contraction of the names Alessia and Stefano, grandchildren of the late Luciano Sandrone. With fruit from Cannubi Boschis, the 2019 Barolo Aleste shows important richness and structure. This is the proverbial Barolo with a capital B. It reveals thick layers of dark fruit, cherry and spice. It shows sweet tannins and impactful texture. When tasting at the winery, Le Vigne is usually served first, and Aleste comes after that. Both wines promise a very long aging window. (Monica Larner)
This red leans more toward black cherry, blackberry and violet flavors, with tar, tea and autumn wood underbrush accents lurking underneath. Firm, dense and persists on the sinewy finish. Combines elegance with power, but needs time. Best from 2027 through 2048. 800 cases made, 200 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

Beautiful aromas of plums and violets with some flint. Full-bodied. Layered and softly chewy. Meat, berry and hints of cedar and nutmeg. Flavorful finish. Solid and very together with a softness at the back of the palate. Drink in 2026 and beyond.
A powerful red, yet well-defined too, with strawberry, cherry, floral, mineral and tobacco aromas and flavors aligned to a muscular structure. Feels balanced overall, yet will take a few years to fully integrate. Best from 2026 through 2045. 580 cases made, 45 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
The La Spinetta 2019 Barbaresco Starderi Vürsù is perfumed and bright with dark rose and wild plum. The wine is solid and dense, with a pretty presentation of fruit that feels healthy and crunchy at the same time. The tannins are well integrated into this structured, full-bodied Barbaresco. The Starderi has shown a very consistent performance over the years. These releases from La Spinetta are all packaged in big, heavy glass bottles. (Monica Larner)

A dense and tightly structured red, this reveals cherry, strawberry, iron, tar and eucalyptus flavors. Beefy tannins uphold the finish, where the lasting impression is a beam of cherry. Well-proportioned, needing time to integrate. Best from 2025 through 2043. 650 cases made, 185 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2019 Barbaresco is such a pretty wine. Freshly cut flowers, cinnamon, orange peel, mint and dried cherry give this mid-weight, finely-knit Barbaresco a good deal of aromatic complexity as well as nuance. Silky and inviting, the 2019 is a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next decade or so, give or take. The 2019 is all pleasure. (Antonio Galloni)

Hints of tomato leaf aromas grace this otherwise fruity red. Rich, offering cherry and strawberry flavors accented by mint and iron. Reveals refined tannins, which provide structure and leave a chalky finish. Best from 2025 through 2043. 3,800 cases made, 800 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)
This pretty bottle boasts a new label design with simple graphics and a slightly retro personality. Due to the difficult growing season, no single-vineyard wines were made in 2018. Instead, fruit was bended here. The Ascheri 2018 Barolo is a classic interpretation of Nebbiolo (representing an assembly of fruit from La Morra, Verduno and Serralunga d’Alba) with an immediately compelling bouquet that reveals a good amount of complexity and some unexpected notes of dried flower and orange peel at the back of wild cherry and redcurrant. This vintage opens quickly (uncork it a few hours before without decanting) and has the upfront consistency and balance to enjoy in the medium term. The finish is also slightly shorter and leaner in this edition. Production is an ample 42,500 bottles. (Monica Larner)
The shy nose offers whiffs of violet, damp underbrush, leather and camphor. The palate has an earthy, almost rustic charm, offering truffle, black olive, botanical herb and Morello cherry before finishing on notes recalling salted game. Tight, dusty tannins leave a drying finish. (Kerin O’Keefe)
