Shop for Barolo and other Nebbiolo Wines

Rarely seen outside its native home in the northwestern Italian region of Piedmont, Nebbiolo takes its name from the word "nebbia" (fog), prevalent in the area during harvest time. Top-end Nebbiolo hails from vineyards within Barolo and Barbaresco. Nebbiolo wines are generally long-lived, frequently drinking well for ten years or more. At the value end, many excellent bottles are produced from younger vines of these top vineyards, as well as from lesser-known areas in Piedmont.

Famed for their complex aromas featuring roses, violets, earth, tar, currants and dried fruits, Nebbiolo wines are sophisticated and incredibly food-friendly. Traditional pairings include roasted meats, mushrooms, veal and lamb -- basically anything bold and rich enough to combat the high levels of tannin and acidity that these wines (especially when young) tend to possess.

The 2017 Barolo is a very pretty, elegant wine and one of the few straight Barolos in this vintage that is truly finessed. Translucent and so expressive, the Oddero Barolo is wonderfully expressive right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry, mint and cinnamon all grace this super-expressive Barolo.

  4. Cordero di Montezemolo Barolo Monfalletto

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#93905

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
With most of its fruit from the Gattera vineyard, the Cordero di Montezemolo 2016 Barolo Monfalletto is a proprietary blend of fruit from La Morra, where this historic winery is headquartered, near the iconic cedar of Lebanon that dominates this picture-perfect landscape. This is a fabulous set of new releases, starting with this classic (entry-level) Barolo that is linear, direct and beautifully focused. The fruit is soft, elegant and open-knit in nature, with berry nuances, oak spice and crushed limestone. I also notice a specifically minty note that I recall from previous vintages, only it appears with more brilliant clarity in this beautiful 2016.
    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
The 2016 Barolo Monfalletto is a gorgeous wine that shows just how fabulous the year is. Bright, floral and light on its feet, the 2016 is all class. The elegance and refinement of La Morra come through loud and clear in a mid-weight, aromatically expressive Barolo that hits all the right notes. Best of all, the 2016 will drink well right out of the gate. This is such a gorgeous and classy wine. Wow.
    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, August 5, 2020
The fruit here straddles the cross-junction between red and black, delivering black raspberries, red and dark plums and cherries and double-colored licorice stick. Tightly wound with stringy tannins and loads of savory undertones to match boisterous cherries and berries. Medium-to full-bodied and very minerally on the finish. Drink from 2023.

  5. Ascheri Barolo

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#93908

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
The Ascheri 2016 Barolo delivers a classic interpretation of the Nebbiolo grape, albeit with a plump and fruit-forward slant. The wine opens to dried cherries and blackberries with balanced background tones of spice, tar, leather and ash. These ethereal tones add to the elegance and depth of the wine. The character of this Barolo is dark and solid, making for an ideal medium to long-term proposition. When the wine is ready to drink five years or more down the line, I’d suggest a pairing with a heavier pasta dishes or risotto with wild porcini mushrooms. The earthiness of those foods would work nicely against the savory side of this sturdy Barolo made with a blend of fruit from three comuni or villages (45% Serralunga d’Alba, 40% La Morra and 15% Verduno). Winemaking is simple, with a short fermentation time lasting about 12 days in stainless steel, followed by 22 months of aging in large Slavonian oak casks (with 70% used and 30% new oak). This was bottled in December 2019 and 22,500 bottles were filled. It hit the market in April 2020.
    WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2020
Intensely fragrant, this has enticing aromas of graphite, chopped mint, forest berry and new leather that practically leap out of the glass. Mirroring the nose, the chewy, vibrant palate delivers raspberry compote, mature black cherry, cinnamon and star anise along with an earthy hint of game. Firm tannins and fresh acidity keep balanced. Drink 2024–2036.

  6. Domenico Clerico Barolo

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#93708

    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, August 4, 2020
Plums, cured meat and white truffles. Pretty aromas. Full-bodied with chewy, ripe tannins and a long, flavorful finish. It’s very structured with lots of ripe tannins and ripe fruit that envelop the phenolics. Solid and real. Give it time to soften and come together. Try after 2023.
    RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
The classic 2016 Barolo by Domenico Clerico is a generous and full wine that offers a panoramic view of the Nebbiolo grape all in bright Technicolor and with the appropriate intensity. The wine’s all-encompassing approach brings many details into focus, including wild cherry, spice, leather and ferrous soil. Fruit is exclusively from Monforte d’Alba, with some from the lower parts of Pajana and Per Cristina and some from the younger vines planted in Ciabot Mentin. This is an elegant expression with the mild oak signature that is an important part of the Clerico playlist. Camphor ash and burnt embers lift lightly as the wine opens in the glass. It ages in barrique for eight months, followed by another year in larger oak casks. Some 20,000 bottles were released.
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2020
This red is fresh, elegant and underscored by a solid tannic structure. A bit compact midpalate, compressing the black cherry, blackberry, iron, tobacco and spice flavors. Sleek and long, with terrific balance. Best from 2023 through 2050. 1,800 cases made, 400 cases imported.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
The 2016 Barolo is bright, fresh and full of life. Medium in body and perfumed, the straight Barolo will give readers a good idea of the direction the estate is headed in. Light on its feet and nuanced, with good energy, the 2016 is quite attractive. But more than that, it points to a very bright future here.

  10. Oddero Barolo Villero

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#94247

    SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2021
Intense flavors of black currant and black cherry are shaded by iron, tar and tobacco in this toned yet powerful red. This is balanced, though needs time to absorb the dense, chalky tannins. The aftertaste extends the fruit element, along with mineral and tobacco accents. Best from 2023 through 2045. 660 cases made.
    RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
The Oddero family suggests tasting their single-vineyard Baroli in this order: Villero, Rocche di Castiglione, Brunate and Bussia. Starting off with the 2016 Barolo Villero, you get an open-knit but very precise expression in which the Nebbiolo grape is able to show its delicate nuances of wild cherry, rose hip, pressed violet and cola. The wine is silky and graceful. This Villero hits all the magic spots in the classic 2016 vintage. It should be exciting to chart its progression over time.
    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, August 4, 2020
Aromas and flavors of strawberries, cherries and walnuts are well-integrated into a medium body with round, fine tannins and a delicious finish. It really has strength with finesse. Goes on and on. Better after 2023.
    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
Black cherry, cloves, melted road tar, licorice and leather all run through Oddero’s 2016 Barolo Villero. Deep on the palate with huge swaths of tannin, the Villero is a decidedly big, virile wine that is going to need time to fully come together. I imagine it will always be a powerhouse, however. The Villero is not especially elegant; the bombastic style clearly favors power over finesse — at least, it does today. Even so, there is plenty of Nebbiolo character and classic, old-school austerity.
    WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2020
Red-berry, blue-flower and menthol aromas mingle with tobacco notes on this full-bodied red. It’s youthfully austere, featuring red cherry, pomegranate, dried herb and star anise set against assertive, close-grained tannins that clench the firm finish. Give the tannins time to unwind and to let it fully develop. Drink 2026–2046.

  11. Francesco Rinaldi & Figli Barolo Cannubi

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#93581

    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
The Francesco Rinaldi & Figli 2016 Barolo Cannubi offers a complete and definitive portrait of this storied vineyard site at the heart of the Barolo comune, or village. One of the big takeaways here is the mouthfeel. This wine shows an enormously silky and pure approach that hits the palate with clarity and purity. Subtle hints of wild rose, raspberry, crushed stone, licorice and dried mint appear along the way. This is a supremely elegant and finely textured wine.
    VN92+92–95 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
The 2016 Barolo Cannubi brings together all the best elements of the year with the natural pedigree of this site. Fresh and vibrant in the glass, with terrific underlying structure, the Cannubi is a Barolo of captivating aromatic intensity and drive that is shaping up to be a real beauty. In 2016, hail was a factor. The estate opted to use some of the affected fruit in the straight Barolo, which then had the effect of lowering production for the single vineyard wine by about 30%. As for the wine itself, well, it is pretty stellar.

  12. Cogno Barolo Cascina Nuova

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#92760

    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 7, 2019
Entrancingly deep, red and blue-rose aromas here with an ethereal, dried-leaf and herb edge and pristine red cherries. The palate has very impressive, fine and tight tannins and a fresh, pure core of red-cherry and plum flavor. Impeccably focused finish. Try from 2023.
    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
The 2015 Barolo Cascina Nuova is a dark and concentrated expression that offers succulence and richness with a full load of ripe summer plum and blackberry. There is softness here with black and purple fruit, natural rubber and savory spice. Pair this wine with a hearty beef en croute and roasted vegetables.
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2019
A supple texture and harmony are the hallmarks of this alluring red, setting you up for pure flavors of cherry, raspberry, licorice, mint and tobacco. A solid backbone of tannins provides support. This should develop nicely over the medium term. Best from 2021 through 2033. 1,900 cases made, 500 cases imported.
    WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2019
Aromas of rose, red berry and wild herbs are front and center on this fresh, refined red. On the bright palate, taut, polished tannins and good acidity accompany juicy raspberry, white pepper and star anise. Drink 2020–2025.
    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2019
The 2015 Barolo Cascina Nuova is a very pretty entry-level offering from Elvio Cogno. Bright red berry and lifted floral notes pair nicely with the wine’s gracious, mid-weight feel. Silky tannins match the wine’s finely sculpted, saline-infused personality. The Cascina Nuova is a terrific example of the bright, taut Barolos made here in 2015. I would prefer to drink this gracious, lithe Barolo over the next decade or so.

    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2017
The 2013 Barolo Vigna S. Caterina opens with a captivating mélange of orange zest, Christmas cake, kirsch and rose petal notes. Medium in body, with a super-classic sense of structure and drive, the 2013 is another winner from Guido Porro. I would prefer to give it a few years to allow the tannins to soften.

  14. Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#94594

    JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/27/2021
The 2017 Barbaresco, sourced from 100 hectares and 54 growers, was aged for 24 months in large oak casks. It offers layers of aromatics woven together with tar, forested earth, dried cherry, and sweet tobacco. The palate is ripe and pure, with raspberry leather, tea leaf, and blood orange. It is mouth-filling, with fruit that is long and persistent, fine tannins, and a lifted finish. Finessed and elegant, the 2017 is drinking beautifully now and will continue to drink well over the next 15 years. 2021–2036.
    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2020
The 2017 Barbaresco shows just how appealing this vintage can be. In 2017, the warm, dry growing season gave the Barbaresco an extra kick of richness that fills out its frame and adds so much immediacy. Sweet red berry fruit, cinnamon, rose petal and mint are open in the glass, but it is the wine’s seductive radiance that wins the day. Pora, Ovello, Montestefano, Muncagota and Rio Sordo are the main vineyards used for the straight Barbaresco. The 2017 is such an inviting and expressive wine. Don’t miss it!

  15. Azelia Barolo

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#93102

    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
Azelia’s classic 2016 Barolo shows a spicy or savory personality with accents of laurel leaf, eucalyptus and clove. Those are some of the high notes that hover over a core of dark fruit and dried blackberry. On the Nebbiolo scale, this wine takes us to a sultry side of the variety, with slightly more fruit weight, texture and pronounced black fruit. If you are choosing your Barolo according to a possible pasta or meat pairing, this would be the meat wine. Azelia’s classico Barolo is a blend of fruit from seven single vineyards, with 30% of the total from Castiglione Falletto and 70% from Serralunga d’Alba. A big portion comes from the Cerretta and Broglio sites, with 50-year-old vines. About 29,000 examples were produced.
    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
Azelia’s 2016 Barolo is a blend of fruit from two parcels in Castiglione Falletto and five in Serralunga, with the character of Serralunga especially felt in the wine’s tannic grip and persistence. Iron, sage, mint, smoke and wild cherry give the Barolo striking aromatic nuance and complexity, all in the mid-weight style that is such a signature at this address. The purity of the fruit is just striking. Stated simply, this is a tremendous wine in its peer group.
