Shop for Barolo Wine and other Nebbiolo Wines

Rarely seen outside its native home in the northwestern Italian region of Piedmont, Nebbiolo takes its name from the word "nebbia" (fog), prevalent in the area during harvest time. Top-end Nebbiolo hails from vineyards within Barolo and Barbaresco. Nebbiolo wines are generally long-lived, frequently drinking well for ten years or more. At the value end, many excellent bottles are produced from younger vines of these top vineyards, as well as from lesser-known areas in Piedmont.

Famed for their complex aromas featuring roses, violets, earth, tar, currants and dried fruits, Nebbiolo wines are sophisticated and incredibly food-friendly. Traditional pairings include roasted meats, mushrooms, veal and lamb -- basically anything bold and rich enough to combat the high levels of tannin and acidity that these wines (especially when young) tend to possess.

  1. Sordo Barolo

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#95634

    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, August 4, 2020
A very fine-tannined red with creamy, polished tannins that run the length of the wine. It’s medium-bodied with pretty length and finesse. Drink or hold.
    RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
The Sordo 2016 Barolo is a well-priced and readily available wine. It is elegantly downplayed and subtle, offering typical Nebbiolo aromas of wild cherry, rose, licorice, cola and aniseed. It spreads over the palate with a fine and delicate texture, and you don’t feel its power until those youthful tannins kick in. Those tannins are a bit too aggressive now, so give it time. Winemaking involves extended maceration with submerged cap and concludes with 24 months in traditional Slavonian oak casks. An ample 150,000 bottles were made.

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#92760

    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 7, 2019
Entrancingly deep, red and blue-rose aromas here with an ethereal, dried-leaf and herb edge and pristine red cherries. The palate has very impressive, fine and tight tannins and a fresh, pure core of red-cherry and plum flavor. Impeccably focused finish. Try from 2023.
    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
The 2015 Barolo Cascina Nuova is a dark and concentrated expression that offers succulence and richness with a full load of ripe summer plum and blackberry. There is softness here with black and purple fruit, natural rubber and savory spice. Pair this wine with a hearty beef en croute and roasted vegetables.
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2019
A supple texture and harmony are the hallmarks of this alluring red, setting you up for pure flavors of cherry, raspberry, licorice, mint and tobacco. A solid backbone of tannins provides support. This should develop nicely over the medium term. Best from 2021 through 2033. 1,900 cases made, 500 cases imported.
    WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2019
Aromas of rose, red berry and wild herbs are front and center on this fresh, refined red. On the bright palate, taut, polished tannins and good acidity accompany juicy raspberry, white pepper and star anise. Drink 2020–2025.
    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2019
The 2015 Barolo Cascina Nuova is a very pretty entry-level offering from Elvio Cogno. Bright red berry and lifted floral notes pair nicely with the wine’s gracious, mid-weight feel. Silky tannins match the wine’s finely sculpted, saline-infused personality. The Cascina Nuova is a terrific example of the bright, taut Barolos made here in 2015. I would prefer to drink this gracious, lithe Barolo over the next decade or so.

    VN8989 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2020 Langhe Nebbiolo is an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years, as the aromatics are quite open and expressive. Sweet tobacco, cedar, dried herbs, mint and crushed red berry fruit build into the layered finish. This mid-weight Nebbiolo from vineyards in Barolo, Novello and Sinio is a real charmer. A very polished, fine-tannined Barolo with energy and focus. Plenty of plum, strawberry and cedar character. It’s full-bodied, yet tight and refined. Racy finish. A beauty. One of the best I have had from here. Drink after 2022 and onwards.
    WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2021
Aromas of red woodland berry, menthol, rose and an earthy whiff of tilled soil are front and center on this lovely red. The vibrant, elegant palate doles out strawberry compote, star anise and baking spice, alongside taut, polished tannins. It’s already going down easily but will offer several years or more of sheer drinking pleasure. Enjoy through 2026.

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#94173

    SP9797 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 10, 2021
There is pure cherry and currant fruit hidden beneath a veneer of tannins in this red, along with mint, iron, tea and tobacco accents. Sleek and refined, harmonious and complex, with a long aftertaste of cherry, mint and mineral. This is poised to evolve beautifully over the next two to three decades. Best from 2024 through 2050. 1,659 cases made.
    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The 2016 Barolo Monprivato is rich, sensual and layered in the glass, with a bit more mid-palate depth and creaminess than past vintages have shown. Bright red berry fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and rose petal are some of the notes that grace this pliant, open-knit Barolo.

    RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022
Lean, compact and even a little spicy on the close, the Damilano 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo Marghe is an accessible, easy-drinking wine that is loaded with lots of fun varietal character. Wild rose, cassis, cherry and pencil shavings are part of that playlist. The wine’s lean texture, its primary fruit and its freshness give Marghe its food-friendly edge. 9. Gaja Barbaresco

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#96782

    WE9898 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2021
Fragrant and loaded with extraordinary finesse, this radiant red offers intense aromas of rose, violet, perfumed berry and camphor. The savory palate boasts flavor, energy and almost ethereal elegance, featuring red cherry, raspberry compote and baking spice alongside taut, polished tannins. It closes on a note of star anise while vibrant acidity keeps it impeccably balanced. It’s already enjoyable but will also offer years of fine wining. Drink through 2033.
    JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, October 5, 2021
Aromas of ripe strawberries with hazelnuts, blood oranges and some coconut. Full-bodied with very refined and polished tannins that nicely form this young red wine. Fresh and delicious aftertaste of berry, cedar, bark and dark chocolate. Ever so subtle, yet powerful and driven at the finish. Very long and intense. Very classical style to it and cooler. This is a blend of seven vineyards including the Costa Russi and Sori Tilden. Approachable now, but better after 2025 and onwards.
    JD96+96+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/27/2021
The hallmark of the Gaja estate, the Barbaresco is sourced from 14 vineyards within Barbaresco and Treiso. For the 2018 vintage, there will be no single cru bottlings for Barbaresco, and all of the fruit has gone into the estate bottling. The 2018 Barbaresco is pure and inviting, with perfumed notes of rose petal, ripe raspberry, and clove. Medium-bodied and approachable, with super fine-grained tannins, it offers fresh strawberry, orange pith, and dusty earth. The undeniable elegance of this 2018 is joyful now, though it will be great to revisit over the next 15 years. Drink 2022–2036.
    RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
The Gaja 2018 Barbaresco is a wine of grace and purpose, with an elegant bouquet and a more powerful palate presence. These recent releases from the venerated house of Gaja are some of the most transparent and honest expressions to be found anywhere in the Langa. Some of the flashiness we saw in the past is today replaced by subtle Nebbiolo nuances and finesse, with crushed flowers, coriander, wild berry, smoke, tar and candied orange peel. This shift in character runs parallel to the slow and careful management transition from an older generation to a younger one. This 2018 vintage comes alive in the mouth, thanks to its balanced acidity and the absolutely bright and pristine quality of fruit delivered with such care.
    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2021
This red is beautifully defined by the purity of its cherry fruit, accented by floral, strawberry and mint. Juicy and graceful, with a line of moderate tannins on the extended finish. Drink now through 2035. 3,750 cases made.

    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The 2017 Barolo is a very pretty, elegant wine and one of the few straight Barolos in this vintage that is truly finessed. Translucent and so expressive, the Oddero Barolo is wonderfully expressive right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry, mint and cinnamon all grace this super-expressive Barolo.

  11. Fratelli Cigliuti Barbaresco Vie Erte

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#93087

    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2019
Cigliuti’s 2016 Barbaresco Vie Erte is absolutely gorgeous. In 2016, the Vie Erte stands out for its distinctive spiced profile and that extra kick of mid-palate richness the wine has acquired now that the vines are nearly twenty years old. Vibrant and energetic, the 2016 has enough pedigree to age well for a number of years, although, quite frankly, it is very delicious right now. The sweet floral, minty and spiced notes that are so typical of this site really come to life with a bit of time in the glass. Although it was only bottled recently, the 2016 is quite expressive. Naturally, it will be even moreso in a few years’ time.
    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 29, 2020
A rose aroma introduces this elegant, fruity red, along with notes of underbrush and sun-kissed hay that offset the core of cherry flavors. Dense, assertive tannins shore up the finish and leave an astringent feel, yet there is plenty of fruit and length. Best from 2023 through 2045. 500 cases made, 175 cases imported.

  12. La Spinetta Barbaresco Starderi

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#93091

    VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2019
The 2016 Barbaresco Vigneto Starderi is outrageously beautiful. Dense, powerful and rich, the 2016 races out of the glass with huge fruit to match its classically mid-weight profile. Super-ripe red/purplish berry fruit, wild flowers, licorice and mint play off the huge tannins with real grace. Readers have to be patient, but the 2016 Starderi is a rock star wine. That’s pretty much all there is to it.
    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
The 2016 Barbaresco Starderi Vürsù starts with a no-nonsense obscure color and ends with lots of dark fruit on the close. In between, it shows a spot of bitterness on the tongue, delivered with ripe fruit and some rather tight tannins. There are lots of tar notes here too, along with the sort of resin and camphor ash you might not have been expecting from such a youthful Barbaresco. But this one has a heavy center of gravity and is not to be trifled with. It’s a big and bold wine that demands a rare cut of beef. Some 14,500 bottles were made.
    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 7, 2019
Raspberry coulis, dried red plums, vanilla, cedar and spice box make for a pronounced and beguiling nose. Full-bodied and very powerful on the palate, yet the tannins are polished and the acidity focused and refreshing. Drink from 2023.

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#96709

    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
This wine draws its fruit from across the Serraboella vineyard in Neive with vines of various ages. The 2018 Barbaresco Serraboella has a broad reach, thanks to its balanced aromas of wild berry, dried cherry, crushed roses and violets. The wine spreads cleanly over the palate, thanks to the extra volume offered by its earthy and delicately mineral flavors. Like other releases from Paitin, the standout feature here is the silky nature of the mouthfeel. Exactly 10,666 bottles were released.
    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, August 4, 2021
Very deep nose with wild-strawberry notes, colored by hints of cinnamon, nuts, dried flowers and a tinge of quite sweet balsamic. Medium-bodied with the same intensity and firm control. The fruit flavors are starting to latch onto the firm tannins, but this is just the beginning of what will be a long process. Try from 2024.

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#97714

    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
Bric Balin is a proprietor name for a 2.4-hectare site within the Muncagota cru. The Moccagatta 2018 Barbaresco Bric Balin is a beautifully dense and rich expression, with deep layers of dark fruit and plenty of steady intensity. it is powered by a 15% alcohol content that is not overly noticeable. The wine is structured and tight with an especially developed texture and structure that adds to the wine’s overall length and staying power. The Bric Balin shows an elegant, firm and well-etched side of the vintage and offers us a fine wine from Moccagatta. Some 4,800 bottles were released.
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2022
This is well-oaked, with layers of vanilla, toast and spice notes wrapped around plum, licorice and tar flavors. There is weight and power, with muscular tannins, yet an overriding sense of balance and harmony. Best from 2025 through 2040. 1,100 cases made, 500 cases imported.
