Shop for Barolo Wine and other Nebbiolo Wines

Rarely seen outside its native home in the northwestern Italian region of Piedmont, Nebbiolo takes its name from the word "nebbia" (fog), prevalent in the area during harvest time. Top-end Nebbiolo hails from vineyards within Barolo and Barbaresco. Nebbiolo wines are generally long-lived, frequently drinking well for ten years or more. At the value end, many excellent bottles are produced from younger vines of these top vineyards, as well as from lesser-known areas in Piedmont.

Famed for their complex aromas featuring roses, violets, earth, tar, currants and dried fruits, Nebbiolo wines are sophisticated and incredibly food-friendly. Traditional pairings include roasted meats, mushrooms, veal and lamb -- basically anything bold and rich enough to combat the high levels of tannin and acidity that these wines (especially when young) tend to possess.

The 2017 Barolo is a very pretty, elegant wine and one of the few straight Barolos in this vintage that is truly finessed. Translucent and so expressive, the Oddero Barolo is wonderfully expressive right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry, mint and cinnamon all grace this super-expressive Barolo.

This is a true beauty. The Giuseppe Mascarello 2015 Barolo Monprivato borrows from the best of the Nebbiolo playlist. You get precision, abundance, focus and depth presented in proud and elegant fashion. Monprivato in Castiglione Falletto shows its worth as one of the best-performing sites in both 2015 and 2016. This warmer growing season presents red and purple fruit with cherry, plum and dried blackberry. A second wave of aromas washes over the senses with spice, licorice, tar and crushed limestone. The mouthfeel is stitched tightly together with interwoven layers of acidity, tannin and fleshy fruit.
    SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2020
Fresh, savory and supple in texture, delivering rose, cherry, plum, leather and wild herb aromas and flavors. Shows a hint of chocolate, but this is more about the purity of fruit. Rich and almost sumptuous, this red stays elegant, providing a vibrant structure for support. Fine length. Best from 2023 through 2043. 1,546 cases made.
    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The 2015 Barolo Monprivato is a pretty, easygoing Barolo. Ripe red berry fruit and soft contours give the 2015 a real sense of immediacy. Soft and supple, with silky contours, it will drink well right out of the gate. The 2015 is not terribly complex, but it is nicely done. This is the best of the three bottles I have tasted so far.

  8. Cordero di Montezemolo Barolo Monfalletto

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#95500

    JS9797 pts. - - Wednesday, July 14, 2021
This shows a lot of tar and roses with dried strawberries as well. Full-bodied with very, very fine tannins that coat your mouth, yet they are so velvety and set up the overall, focused and pure-fruit impression of the wine. Fantastic young Barolo. From organically grown grapes. Better in 2026, when the tannins will be more resolved.
    WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2021
Made with certified organic grapes, this has aromas of underbrush, ripe dark-skinned berry, eucalyptus and French oak. The full-bodied palate reflects the nose, offering dried cherry, licorice, coconut and toasted hazelnut framed in taut, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2024–2032.
    RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
The 2017 Barolo Monfalletto does an impressive job of showing the most detailed and elegant side of a vintage that threw quite a few curveballs at the vintners of the Langa and most of Italy because of heat and a lack of summer water reserves. This wine gently sidesteps all those difficulties to instead focus on the inner purity of the Nebbiolo grape. There is a fresh layer of wild cherry that quickly cedes to more substantial tones of earth, cedar and spice. The tannin is more present in the 2017. Monfalletto draws most of its fruit from the Gattera cru and some from Annunziata, both located in La Morra where this historic winery is located. This was an ample production of 46,000 bottles.
    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The 2017 Barolo Monfalletto is a pretty, polished wine to drink now and over the next handful of years, maybe more. Alberto Cordero di Montezemolo has succeeded in crafting a Barolo that is unusually silky for the year, with little of the edginess found in so many wines. The 2017 is a bit light, but it is also impeccably balanced and a real delight. Crushed red berries, spice and gentle floral notes linger on the soft, open-knit finish.

  11. Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#94594

    JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/27/2021
The 2017 Barbaresco, sourced from 100 hectares and 54 growers, was aged for 24 months in large oak casks. It offers layers of aromatics woven together with tar, forested earth, dried cherry, and sweet tobacco. The palate is ripe and pure, with raspberry leather, tea leaf, and blood orange. It is mouth-filling, with fruit that is long and persistent, fine tannins, and a lifted finish. Finessed and elegant, the 2017 is drinking beautifully now and will continue to drink well over the next 15 years. 2021–2036.
    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2020
The 2017 Barbaresco shows just how appealing this vintage can be. In 2017, the warm, dry growing season gave the Barbaresco an extra kick of richness that fills out its frame and adds so much immediacy. Sweet red berry fruit, cinnamon, rose petal and mint are open in the glass, but it is the wine’s seductive radiance that wins the day. Pora, Ovello, Montestefano, Muncagota and Rio Sordo are the main vineyards used for the straight Barbaresco. The 2017 is such an inviting and expressive wine. Don’t miss it!

  13. Oddero Barolo Villero

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#94247

    SP9696 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2021
Intense flavors of black currant and black cherry are shaded by iron, tar and tobacco in this toned yet powerful red. This is balanced, though needs time to absorb the dense, chalky tannins. The aftertaste extends the fruit element, along with mineral and tobacco accents. Best from 2023 through 2045. 660 cases made.
    RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
The Oddero family suggests tasting their single-vineyard Baroli in this order: Villero, Rocche di Castiglione, Brunate and Bussia. Starting off with the 2016 Barolo Villero, you get an open-knit but very precise expression in which the Nebbiolo grape is able to show its delicate nuances of wild cherry, rose hip, pressed violet and cola. The wine is silky and graceful. This Villero hits all the magic spots in the classic 2016 vintage. It should be exciting to chart its progression over time.
    JS9595 pts. - - Tuesday, August 4, 2020
Aromas and flavors of strawberries, cherries and walnuts are well-integrated into a medium body with round, fine tannins and a delicious finish. It really has strength with finesse. Goes on and on. Better after 2023.
    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
Black cherry, cloves, melted road tar, licorice and leather all run through Oddero’s 2016 Barolo Villero. Deep on the palate with huge swaths of tannin, the Villero is a decidedly big, virile wine that is going to need time to fully come together. I imagine it will always be a powerhouse, however. The Villero is not especially elegant; the bombastic style clearly favors power over finesse — at least, it does today. Even so, there is plenty of Nebbiolo character and classic, old-school austerity.
    WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2020
Red-berry, blue-flower and menthol aromas mingle with tobacco notes on this full-bodied red. It’s youthfully austere, featuring red cherry, pomegranate, dried herb and star anise set against assertive, close-grained tannins that clench the firm finish. Give the tannins time to unwind and to let it fully develop. Drink 2026–2046.

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#95239

    JS9696 pts. - - Thursday, September 3, 2020
Wonderful purity of fruit with ripe-strawberry and burnt-orange aromas that follow through to a full body with fine, creamy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Shows finesse and focus. Classy. Harmony. Drinkable now, but better after 2022.
    SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2021
Saturated with cherry, plum, coffee and earth flavors, this red is fluid, yet has density and a solid structure, with nervous tannins and terrific intensity and energy. Impeccably balanced and long, ending with grace and focus. Best from 2024 through 2045. 420 cases made, 100 cases imported.
