Rarely seen outside its native home in the northwestern Italian region of Piedmont, Nebbiolo takes its name from the word "nebbia" (fog), prevalent in the area during harvest time. Top-end Nebbiolo hails from vineyards within Barolo and Barbaresco. Nebbiolo wines are generally long-lived, frequently drinking well for ten years or more. At the value end, many excellent bottles are produced from younger vines of these top vineyards, as well as from lesser-known areas in Piedmont.
Famed for their complex aromas featuring roses, violets, earth, tar, currants and dried fruits, Nebbiolo wines are sophisticated and incredibly food-friendly. Traditional pairings include roasted meats, mushrooms, veal and lamb -- basically anything bold and rich enough to combat the high levels of tannin and acidity that these wines (especially when young) tend to possess.
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/27/2021 The 2017 Barbaresco, sourced from 100 hectares and 54 growers, was aged for 24 months in large oak casks. It offers layers of aromatics woven together with tar, forested earth, dried cherry, and sweet tobacco. The palate is ripe and pure, with raspberry leather, tea leaf, and blood orange. It is mouth-filling, with fruit that is long and persistent, fine tannins, and a lifted finish. Finessed and elegant, the 2017 is drinking beautifully now and will continue to drink well over the next 15 years. 2021–2036.VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2020 The 2017 Barbaresco shows just how appealing this vintage can be. In 2017, the warm, dry growing season gave the Barbaresco an extra kick of richness that fills out its frame and adds so much immediacy. Sweet red berry fruit, cinnamon, rose petal and mint are open in the glass, but it is the wine’s seductive radiance that wins the day. Pora, Ovello, Montestefano, Muncagota and Rio Sordo are the main vineyards used for the straight Barbaresco. The 2017 is such an inviting and expressive wine. Don’t miss it!
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, August 4, 2020 A very fine-tannined red with creamy, polished tannins that run the length of the wine. It’s medium-bodied with pretty length and finesse. Drink or hold.RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020 The Sordo 2016 Barolo is a well-priced and readily available wine. It is elegantly downplayed and subtle, offering typical Nebbiolo aromas of wild cherry, rose, licorice, cola and aniseed. It spreads over the palate with a fine and delicate texture, and you don’t feel its power until those youthful tannins kick in. Those tannins are a bit too aggressive now, so give it time. Winemaking involves extended maceration with submerged cap and concludes with 24 months in traditional Slavonian oak casks. An ample 150,000 bottles were made.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2018 Lovely scents of perfumed berry, blue flower, underbrush and wild mint take center stage while the ethereal graceful palate offers crushed strawberry, sour cherry, star anise and a hint of white pepper alongside lithe tannins. Bright acidity lends balance and energy. Drink through 2024.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020 The Francesco Rinaldi & Figli 2016 Barolo shows sweet and ripe fruit with distant aromas of wild strawberry, forest berry and a hint of dried prune. The standard blending formula for this classic Barolo sees fruit from six vineyard parcels, including some from the celebrated Cannubi cru that is most strongly identified with this estate. This vintage awards some added softness and fruitiness that goes a long way to create a long and silky mouthfeel.VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2020 The 2016 Barolo is a terrific choice for readers looking for a wine that can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. Bright, floral and nicely lifted, the 2016 is decidedly airy in build. There is lovely vivacity to the flavors, but my overall impression is of a relatively light Barolo that is best suited to near and medium-term drinking.
JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, July 14, 2021 This shows a lot of tar and roses with dried strawberries as well. Full-bodied with very, very fine tannins that coat your mouth, yet they are so velvety and set up the overall, focused and pure-fruit impression of the wine. Fantastic young Barolo. From organically grown grapes. Better in 2026, when the tannins will be more resolved.WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2021 Made with certified organic grapes, this has aromas of underbrush, ripe dark-skinned berry, eucalyptus and French oak. The full-bodied palate reflects the nose, offering dried cherry, licorice, coconut and toasted hazelnut framed in taut, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2024–2032.RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021 The 2017 Barolo Monfalletto does an impressive job of showing the most detailed and elegant side of a vintage that threw quite a few curveballs at the vintners of the Langa and most of Italy because of heat and a lack of summer water reserves. This wine gently sidesteps all those difficulties to instead focus on the inner purity of the Nebbiolo grape. There is a fresh layer of wild cherry that quickly cedes to more substantial tones of earth, cedar and spice. The tannin is more present in the 2017. Monfalletto draws most of its fruit from the Gattera cru and some from Annunziata, both located in La Morra where this historic winery is located. This was an ample production of 46,000 bottles.VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021 The 2017 Barolo Monfalletto is a pretty, polished wine to drink now and over the next handful of years, maybe more. Alberto Cordero di Montezemolo has succeeded in crafting a Barolo that is unusually silky for the year, with little of the edginess found in so many wines. The 2017 is a bit light, but it is also impeccably balanced and a real delight. Crushed red berries, spice and gentle floral notes linger on the soft, open-knit finish.
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 5, 2021 A creamy yet firm young Barolo with medium to full body, dried strawberry, cherry and spice. Long and focused. Tight at the very end. Needs time to open. Try after 2023.RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021 Open-knit and accessible overall, the Bovio 2017 Barolo sees fruit from both La Morra and Castiglione Falletto. You don’t get total clarity or focus here, but it’s not far off. Lively cherry fruit and dried blackberry mingle with spice and licorice at the back. This is a steady, easygoing Barolo with some extra structure to cap it off. Some 7,500 bottles were released.JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/27/2021 From vineyards in La Morra and Castiglione Falletto, the 2017 Barolo was aged for 22 months in French oak and 8 months in concrete before resting in bottle. Fresh, ripe aromas of red cherry, rose petal, and orange peel. Lead to a wine with open structure and notes of dried raspberry, peach pit, and black tea. Lovely and approachable, it is ready for drinking now. Enjoy 2021–2032.
WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2019 Fruity and floral, this fresh, juicy red offers aromas of wild berries, fragrant blue flowers and crushed herbs with a whiff of forest floor. Showing Nebbiolo’s playful, charming side, it’s bright and delicious, doling out succulent Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, orange zest and baking spice alongside tangy acidity and supple tannins. It’s made to be enjoyed young, so drink over the next few years.
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2020 Aromas of dark-skinned berry, eucalyptus, star anise and graphite fill the glass with this mountain Nebbiolo. Fresh and focused, the savory palate doles out ripe Morello cherry, black raspberry, Alpine herb and white pepper before an almost salty mineral close. Polished tannins and bright acidity provide freshness and finesse. Drink through 2027.VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2020 The Ar. Pe. Pe. 2017 Rosso di Valtellina is very pretty and lifted in feel. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, mint and white pepper give the 2017 an attractive top register of aromatic intensity as this airy, mid-weight Valtellina red opens up in the glass. The 2017 can be enjoyed now or cellared for at least a handful of years. I find it irresistibly delicious right now.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021 The 2017 Barolo is a very pretty, elegant wine and one of the few straight Barolos in this vintage that is truly finessed. Translucent and so expressive, the Oddero Barolo is wonderfully expressive right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry, mint and cinnamon all grace this super-expressive Barolo.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019 The Ceretto 2015 Barolo is a great wine to pair with fassona, the famous beef from this region, or any other typical Piedmontese meat dish. This is the so-called base Barolo, or classico, that is designed to be an expression of the Nebbiolo grape more than any single-vineyard cru. The wine is satiny and silky with fine texture. Producers hate this “base” descriptor, because it implies an inferior product to a cru. Don’t be misled: This is a Barolo-lover’s Barolo. It’s a true gem and an extremely elegant creation, and with 54,000 bottles produced, there is enough to go around.SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2020 Plum and cherry fruit meld into the rich texture, with firm yet integrated tannins. Spicy and lively, featuring a lingering, mouthwatering finish. Best from 2022 through 2040. 4,500 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2019 Camphor, new leather, sunbaked soil and the merest whiff of game appear in the glass. On the linear palate, polished tannins and fresh acidity accompany juicy sour cherry, pomegranate, star anise and espresso. Drink 2020–2027.
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 7, 2019 Entrancingly deep, red and blue-rose aromas here with an ethereal, dried-leaf and herb edge and pristine red cherries. The palate has very impressive, fine and tight tannins and a fresh, pure core of red-cherry and plum flavor. Impeccably focused finish. Try from 2023.RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019 The 2015 Barolo Cascina Nuova is a dark and concentrated expression that offers succulence and richness with a full load of ripe summer plum and blackberry. There is softness here with black and purple fruit, natural rubber and savory spice. Pair this wine with a hearty beef en croute and roasted vegetables.SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2019 A supple texture and harmony are the hallmarks of this alluring red, setting you up for pure flavors of cherry, raspberry, licorice, mint and tobacco. A solid backbone of tannins provides support. This should develop nicely over the medium term. Best from 2021 through 2033. 1,900 cases made, 500 cases imported.WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2019 Aromas of rose, red berry and wild herbs are front and center on this fresh, refined red. On the bright palate, taut, polished tannins and good acidity accompany juicy raspberry, white pepper and star anise. Drink 2020–2025.VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2019 The 2015 Barolo Cascina Nuova is a very pretty entry-level offering from Elvio Cogno. Bright red berry and lifted floral notes pair nicely with the wine’s gracious, mid-weight feel. Silky tannins match the wine’s finely sculpted, saline-infused personality. The Cascina Nuova is a terrific example of the bright, taut Barolos made here in 2015. I would prefer to drink this gracious, lithe Barolo over the next decade or so.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2019 Cigliuti’s 2016 Barbaresco Vie Erte is absolutely gorgeous. In 2016, the Vie Erte stands out for its distinctive spiced profile and that extra kick of mid-palate richness the wine has acquired now that the vines are nearly twenty years old. Vibrant and energetic, the 2016 has enough pedigree to age well for a number of years, although, quite frankly, it is very delicious right now. The sweet floral, minty and spiced notes that are so typical of this site really come to life with a bit of time in the glass. Although it was only bottled recently, the 2016 is quite expressive. Naturally, it will be even moreso in a few years’ time.SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 29, 2020 A rose aroma introduces this elegant, fruity red, along with notes of underbrush and sun-kissed hay that offset the core of cherry flavors. Dense, assertive tannins shore up the finish and leave an astringent feel, yet there is plenty of fruit and length. Best from 2023 through 2045. 500 cases made, 175 cases imported.
