Shop for Barolo and other Nebbiolo Wines

Rarely seen outside its native home in the northwestern Italian region of Piedmont, Nebbiolo takes its name from the word "nebbia" (fog), prevalent in the area during harvest time. Top-end Nebbiolo hails from vineyards within Barolo and Barbaresco. Nebbiolo wines are generally long-lived, frequently drinking well for ten years or more. At the value end, many excellent bottles are produced from younger vines of these top vineyards, as well as from lesser-known areas in Piedmont.

Famed for their complex aromas featuring roses, violets, earth, tar, currants and dried fruits, Nebbiolo wines are sophisticated and incredibly food-friendly. Traditional pairings include roasted meats, mushrooms, veal and lamb -- basically anything bold and rich enough to combat the high levels of tannin and acidity that these wines (especially when young) tend to possess.

  2. Oddero Barolo

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#92802

    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
Oddero’s classic 2016 Barolo delivers everything you seek in this beautiful vintage. The wine is linear and tight, precise and focused, showing vivid fruit, wild berry, rose hip, aniseed and grilled herb. These aromas are delivered with carefully intensity, in which you can make out each characteristic and no one element is masked or covered. Fruit is drawn from three vineyard sites: Bricco Chiesa and Capalot both in La Morra, and Fiasco in Castiglione Falletto. The balance is spot on, and so is the wine’s value price.
    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 7, 2019
While the fruit is dried and ripe, it’s also very focussed and floral. Dried cherries, dried rose petals and orange zest spring into action. The tannins aren’t the most powerful, but they are beautifully integrated with nothing sticking out, one fine strand building over the next. Medium-to full-bodied and vertical and medium-chewy on the finish. Drink from 2023.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
The 2016 Barolo is a gorgeous entry-level offering in this range that also shows just how compelling the vintage is. Deep, plush and exquisitely layered, the 2016 has so much to offer. Hints of spice, orange peel, rose petal and tar add pretty aromatic top notes throughout. This is such an alluring and irresistible wine.

  3. Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#92592

    WE9696 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2019
Aromas of leather, forest floor, mature black-skinned berry, graphite and pipe tobacco form the nose on this classic expression of Barolo. On the structured, delicious palate, taut, polished tannins support juicy Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and menthol, while fresh acidity keeps it balanced. It closes on a note of brown spice. Best 2020–2030.
    RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
I had tasted this wine from barrel last year, and the wine was already shaping up beautifully back then. Staying the course, the 2015 Barolo Bricco Boschis shows extreme elegance and finesse. These are the characteristics of what is surely one of the most beautiful vineyard sites in Barolo. The Bricco Boschis cru affords a panoramic view onto much of the Langhe, with snowcapped Alps in the background. Barolo from Castiglione Falletto tends to show characteristics that are very fine, precise and linear. That’s fundamentally what you get here despite the more exuberant and fleshy 2015 vintage. This wine is truly beautiful. Some 27,700 bottles were made.
    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2020
Mint, eucalyptus, cherry, plum and licorice notes mark this savory style of Barolo. Dense tannins pave the way for a long finish that echoes the cherry flavors and adds mineral and tobacco elements. Still a little rigid on the finish, yet shows fine balance overall. Best from 2023 through 2040. 2,312 cases made, 700 cases imported.

  4. Nervi Gattinara

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#89684

    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2019
Haunting aromas of rose, wild cherry, kirsch, mineral and leather are the hallmarks of this silky, elegant red, which is linear and balanced, extending on the finish with notes of fruit, spice, mineral and tobacco. Very harmonious. Drink now through 2033. 5,000 cases made.
    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
The weather in Gattinara is often unexpected. For example, in 2017 it rained more in this area than it did in Barolo. This vintage was more tempered, and this 2015 Gattinara comes across as pretty, elegant and soft, with light notes of berries and a pretty ashy signature. This particular expression of Nebbiolo would be a good choice for lamb.

  7. Oddero Barolo Villero

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#90798

    JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, June 16, 2019
Pure and aromatic with cherry, dark-berry and strawberry aromas with hints of peach pit and stone. Full-bodied, very tight and tannic with a focused and lengthy finish. Shows precision and power. Drink in 2023.
    VN94+94+ pts. - Vinous - Feb 2019
The 2015 Barolo Villero is another striking wine in this range. Here it is the wine’s texture and resonance that stand out most. Spice, lavender and menthol notes appear with time in the glass, but it is really the layers of depth and overall complexity that make the Villero one of the most complete wines in the range.
    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
Oddero did not make this wine at all in 2014. They experienced hailstorms that year, and Villero suffered the most damage, becoming the only wine to be skipped over in their portfolio. They bought this parcel, located in Castiglione Falletto, in 1989 and have rarely had a sub-par vintage since. The 2015 Barolo Villero is one of the better ones on record, marked by an enormous structure and power to its classic profile of dark berries and currant. You could give it plenty of time to evolve in the cellar, or open it in the short-term to breathe next to a platter of prosciutto, culatello and mild cheeses.

    2014 / 750 ml. | Item#89674

    JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, September 24, 2018
Very pretty 2014 with orange-peel, leather, spice and plum character. Medium body, firm tannins and a juicy finish. Drink or hold.
    SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2018
Walks the line between dusty cherry fruit and leather and tobacco flavors, buoyed by vibrant acidity and light tannins that leave a dusting of cocoa and spice on the finish. Elegant, yet intense. Best from 2023 through 2042. 5,000 cases made.
    WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 11/1/2018
Fragrant blue-flower, rose and chopped mint aromas lead the nose along with a whiff of eucalyptus. The taut medium-bodied palate offers sour cherry, cranberry, dried sage and a white-pepper note alongside youthfully austere fine-grained tannins and firm acidity. Drink 2021–2026.

  9. Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#91627

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
The 2016 Barbaresco is a tight and beautiful wine that will require more time to unwind and soften. This beautifully balanced vintage is characterized by a tight inner core of fruit that underlines the graceful aging capacity of these wines. The 2016 is shaping up to be one destined for long cellar aging. Now in its youth, the wine offers wild berry, rose and licorice aromas.
    WS9595 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2019
This is Produttori del Barbaresco’s flagship wine, produced with fruit selected from their 54 growers, who collectively farm some 250 acres of vines, and it is a stunner in the 2016 vintage. It’s ripe and precise, the vibrant red fruit lifted by fresh floral scents and subtle spice. The tannins envelop that fruit like a soft leather glove, as brisk acidity propels the flavors toward a vertical finish. There’s no better bargain in Barbaresco, and with 22,000 cases produced, this should be on every serious Italian wine list and in every nebbiolo lover’s cellar.
    WE9595 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2019
Enticing aromas of violet, woodland berry, loose vineyard soil, wild mint and a hint of spearmint shape the intensely fragrant nose. The tense, young palate is still nervous but already boasts finesse, showing wild raspberry, crunchy red cherry, white pepper and star anise. Firm, refined tannins and racy acidity give it a linear, almost austere elegance, while bright acidity keeps it focused and balanced. Drink 2026–2036.
    VN9494 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2019
The 2016 Barbaresco is a stunning wine with tremendous richness for this bottling. Ample, deep and powerful, the 2016 exudes pedigree and class from start to finish. I can’t remember a straight Barbaresco here with this much fruit density and unctuous richness, and yet there is more than enough tannin and overall structure to give the wine its classically leaning feel. A blast of sweet red cherry fruit, tobacco, menthol licorice and smoke hits the potent finish. What a wine!
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2019
Cherry, tar and menthol flavors mark this rich, silky red. Even more expansive on the palate, building to a long, complex aftertaste. Beautifully balanced, this picks up a minerally accent on the finish. Best from 2022 through 2038. 25,000 cases made, 7,500 cases imported.

  13. Elio Grasso Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#92194

    VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
Ample and creamy on the palate, with tremendous depth, the 2016 Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is super impressive, even in the early going. Next to the Gavarini Chiniera, the Ginestra Casa Matè is a Barolo of textural resonance and volume. Black cherry, plum and a range of balsamic notes infuse the 2016 with tons of character. The is one of the real standouts of the year.
    RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2020
The Elio Grasso 2016 Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté starts off a bit shy, or closed, and I was never fully able to get the wine to open. I decanted two bottles and went back over the course of a few days to check on their progress. That said, the wine never let its guard down. It remained super tight and compact over the course of my long evaluation. Given the care and reputation of this estate, I’m betting on a very long cellar evolution for this bottle. With fruit from a three-hectare plot in Ginestra, it offers beautiful structure with integrated acidity and tannins. The mouthfeel is gorgeous, but I wish the wine would offer more on the bouquet. Red fruit and wild berry are followed by grilled herb, crushed flower and dried lilac. The aromatic playlist is subtle and hushed. An ample 20,000 bottles were produced, and I hope to encounter this wine again sometime in the future when it has evolved.

Fruity and floral, this fresh, juicy red offers aromas of wild berries, fragrant blue flowers and crushed herbs with a whiff of forest floor. Showing Nebbiolo’s playful, charming side, it’s bright and delicious, doling out succulent Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, orange zest and baking spice alongside tangy acidity and supple tannins. It’s made to be enjoyed young, so drink over the next few years.

  15. Domenico Clerico Barolo

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#93708

    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, August 4, 2020
Plums, cured meat and white truffles. Pretty aromas. Full-bodied with chewy, ripe tannins and a long, flavorful finish. It’s very structured with lots of ripe tannins and ripe fruit that envelop the phenolics. Solid and real. Give it time to soften and come together. Try after 2023.
    RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
The classic 2016 Barolo by Domenico Clerico is a generous and full wine that offers a panoramic view of the Nebbiolo grape all in bright Technicolor and with the appropriate intensity. The wine’s all-encompassing approach brings many details into focus, including wild cherry, spice, leather and ferrous soil. Fruit is exclusively from Monforte d’Alba, with some from the lower parts of Pajana and Per Cristina and some from the younger vines planted in Ciabot Mentin. This is an elegant expression with the mild oak signature that is an important part of the Clerico playlist. Camphor ash and burnt embers lift lightly as the wine opens in the glass. It ages in barrique for eight months, followed by another year in larger oak casks. Some 20,000 bottles were released.
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2020
This red is fresh, elegant and underscored by a solid tannic structure. A bit compact midpalate, compressing the black cherry, blackberry, iron, tobacco and spice flavors. Sleek and long, with terrific balance. Best from 2023 through 2050. 1,800 cases made, 400 cases imported.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
The 2016 Barolo is bright, fresh and full of life. Medium in body and perfumed, the straight Barolo will give readers a good idea of the direction the estate is headed in. Light on its feet and nuanced, with good energy, the 2016 is quite attractive. But more than that, it points to a very bright future here.
