Nebbiolo

Shop for Barolo Wine and other Nebbiolo Wines

Rarely seen outside its native home in the northwestern Italian region of Piedmont, Nebbiolo takes its name from the word "nebbia" (fog), prevalent in the area during harvest time. Top-end Nebbiolo hails from vineyards within Barolo and Barbaresco. Nebbiolo wines are generally long-lived, frequently drinking well for ten years or more. At the value end, many excellent bottles are produced from younger vines of these top vineyards, as well as from lesser-known areas in Piedmont.

Famed for their complex aromas featuring roses, violets, earth, tar, currants and dried fruits, Nebbiolo wines are sophisticated and incredibly food-friendly. Traditional pairings include roasted meats, mushrooms, veal and lamb -- basically anything bold and rich enough to combat the high levels of tannin and acidity that these wines (especially when young) tend to possess.

  1. Parusso Barolo Perarmando

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#97492

    JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, March 3, 2022
A rich nose, packed with aromas of ripe and dried red fruit, including heaps of wild strawberries. There’s fresh orange rind, too and on the savory side, notes of cloves, perfumed bark and brighter flowers. Full-bodied with a very silky but firm texture. The strawberry and citrus fruit is ingrained in the velvety tannins and the combination gives a very long finish. Twist of red licorice at the end. This is nicely structured and well balanced, but needs plenty of time. Try from 2026.
    VN8989 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2022
The 2018 Barolo Perarmando is gracious and intensely perfumed. Sweet dried cherry, cinnamon, mint, spice, tobacco and cedar give the Perarmando its distinctive aromatic profile. The tannins are a bit firm, but nothing a few years in bottle can’t take care of. Perarmando is the new name for the estate’s entery-level straight Barolo.

    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 7, 2019
Entrancingly deep, red and blue-rose aromas here with an ethereal, dried-leaf and herb edge and pristine red cherries. The palate has very impressive, fine and tight tannins and a fresh, pure core of red-cherry and plum flavor. Impeccably focused finish. Try from 2023.
    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
The 2015 Barolo Cascina Nuova is a dark and concentrated expression that offers succulence and richness with a full load of ripe summer plum and blackberry. There is softness here with black and purple fruit, natural rubber and savory spice. Pair this wine with a hearty beef en croute and roasted vegetables.
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2019
A supple texture and harmony are the hallmarks of this alluring red, setting you up for pure flavors of cherry, raspberry, licorice, mint and tobacco. A solid backbone of tannins provides support. This should develop nicely over the medium term. Best from 2021 through 2033. 1,900 cases made, 500 cases imported.
    WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2019
Aromas of rose, red berry and wild herbs are front and center on this fresh, refined red. On the bright palate, taut, polished tannins and good acidity accompany juicy raspberry, white pepper and star anise. Drink 2020–2025.
    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2019
The 2015 Barolo Cascina Nuova is a very pretty entry-level offering from Elvio Cogno. Bright red berry and lifted floral notes pair nicely with the wine’s gracious, mid-weight feel. Silky tannins match the wine’s finely sculpted, saline-infused personality. The Cascina Nuova is a terrific example of the bright, taut Barolos made here in 2015. I would prefer to drink this gracious, lithe Barolo over the next decade or so.

    VN8888 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2022
The 2017 Carema is an attractive wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Sweet dried cherry, mint, tobacco, spice and worn-in leather are all typical of a wine that is heading into maturity. Even so, this mid-weight, gracious Carema has plenty to offer, especially for readers who enjoy wines with a bit of tertiary complexity. (Antonio Galloni)

There is pure cherry and currant fruit hidden beneath a veneer of tannins in this red, along with mint, iron, tea and tobacco accents. Sleek and refined, harmonious and complex, with a long aftertaste of cherry, mint and mineral. This is poised to evolve beautifully over the next two to three decades. Best from 2024 through 2050. 1,659 cases made.
    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The 2016 Barolo Monprivato is rich, sensual and layered in the glass, with a bit more mid-palate depth and creaminess than past vintages have shown. Bright red berry fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and rose petal are some of the notes that grace this pliant, open-knit Barolo.

Backed by vibrant acidity and refined tannins, this leaves a long aftertaste of fruit, mineral and savory elements. Best from 2025 through 2048. 400 cases made, 100 cases imported.

  8. Gaja Barbaresco

    2018 / 750 ml. | Item#96782

    WE9898 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2021
Fragrant and loaded with extraordinary finesse, this radiant red offers intense aromas of rose, violet, perfumed berry and camphor. The savory palate boasts flavor, energy and almost ethereal elegance, featuring red cherry, raspberry compote and baking spice alongside taut, polished tannins. It closes on a note of star anise while vibrant acidity keeps it impeccably balanced. It’s already enjoyable but will also offer years of fine wining. Drink through 2033.
    JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, October 5, 2021
Aromas of ripe strawberries with hazelnuts, blood oranges and some coconut. Full-bodied with very refined and polished tannins that nicely form this young red wine. Fresh and delicious aftertaste of berry, cedar, bark and dark chocolate. Ever so subtle, yet powerful and driven at the finish. Very long and intense. Very classical style to it and cooler. This is a blend of seven vineyards including the Costa Russi and Sori Tilden. Approachable now, but better after 2025 and onwards.
    JD96+96+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/27/2021
The hallmark of the Gaja estate, the Barbaresco is sourced from 14 vineyards within Barbaresco and Treiso. For the 2018 vintage, there will be no single cru bottlings for Barbaresco, and all of the fruit has gone into the estate bottling. The 2018 Barbaresco is pure and inviting, with perfumed notes of rose petal, ripe raspberry, and clove. Medium-bodied and approachable, with super fine-grained tannins, it offers fresh strawberry, orange pith, and dusty earth. The undeniable elegance of this 2018 is joyful now, though it will be great to revisit over the next 15 years. Drink 2022–2036. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP94+94+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
The Gaja 2018 Barbaresco is a wine of grace and purpose, with an elegant bouquet and a more powerful palate presence. These recent releases from the venerated house of Gaja are some of the most transparent and honest expressions to be found anywhere in the Langa. Some of the flashiness we saw in the past is today replaced by subtle Nebbiolo nuances and finesse, with crushed flowers, coriander, wild berry, smoke, tar and candied orange peel. This shift in character runs parallel to the slow and careful management transition from an older generation to a younger one. This 2018 vintage comes alive in the mouth, thanks to its balanced acidity and the absolutely bright and pristine quality of fruit delivered with such care.
    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2021
This red is beautifully defined by the purity of its cherry fruit, accented by floral, strawberry and mint. Juicy and graceful, with a line of moderate tannins on the extended finish. Drink now through 2035. 3,750 cases made.

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#97628

    RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jun 2022
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is darkly concentrated and among the richest wines in this series of single-vineyard Riservas. Montestefano is angular, textured and bold with dark fruit aromas, dried blackberry, toasted almond and cured tobacco. With this vintage, you get an age-worthy wine that offers brawn and power for drinking in the medium term, but it will become increasingly silky and slender with time. Dusty tannins and crushed stone appear on the long finish. There were 14,486 bottles produced.

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#96239

    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
The Ceretto 2015 Barolo is a great wine to pair with fassona, the famous beef from this region, or any other typical Piedmontese meat dish. This is the so-called base Barolo, or classico, that is designed to be an expression of the Nebbiolo grape more than any single-vineyard cru. The wine is satiny and silky with fine texture. Producers hate this “base” descriptor, because it implies an inferior product to a cru. Don’t be misled: This is a Barolo-lover’s Barolo. It’s a true gem and an extremely elegant creation, and with 54,000 bottles produced, there is enough to go around.
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Apr 30, 2020
Plum and cherry fruit meld into the rich texture, with firm yet integrated tannins. Spicy and lively, featuring a lingering, mouthwatering finish. Best from 2022 through 2040. 4,500 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.

  11. Azelia Barolo

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#96876

    JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 5, 2021
Fascinating aromas of ripe strawberry, bark, mushroom and black tea follow through to a full body with round, creamy tannins that are juicy and rather punchy. Try after 2024.
    JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/27/2021
Sourced from seven parcels across Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d’Alba, the 2017 Barolo reveals medicinal aromatics of menthol, dried cherry, and nutmeg. The palate is angular with gripping structure and noted by cranberry cocktail, tea leaf, and orange citrus. This 2017 is classically built within the warmth of the vintage. Drink 2023–2036. (Jeb Dunnuck)
    RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
The Azelia 2017 Barolo is fine and elegant, opening to a pretty ruby color that catches the ambient light. To the nose, it offers cherry and wild rose with licorice and campfire ash. You do notice the extra heft and dryness of the tannins, especially when the wine is tasted before its ideal drinking window. Luigi Scavino’s classic Barolo is a blend of seven vineyard sites: Altenasso and Solanotto in Castiglione Falletto; a part of Cerretta; the youngest vines in Bricco Voghera that are 55 to 60 years old (the fruit from the 90-year-old plants goes to the Riserva); and parts of San Rocco, Cerrati and Broglio in Serralunga d’Alba. Production stands at about 28,000 bottles.
    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The 2017 Barolo is a gorgeous entry-level wine. Scorched earth, tar, licorice, black cherry and gravel give the Barolo an unusually dark, brooding profile in 2017. As it often is, the 2017 Azelia Barolo offers tremendous character and nuance in its peer group, or any peer group for that matter. Translucent and so expressive, the 2017 has a lot to offer.
    WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2021
Aromas of wild berry, eucalyptus and fennel seed mingle with blue flower. On the austere palate, tightly wound tannins accompany sour cherry, blood orange and licorice before a firm, rather lean finish.

  12. E. Pira e Figli Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#95148

    JS9696 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, May 5, 2021
Plums and ripe strawberries with some crushed-stone undertones. Full-bodied and layered with round, rich tannins and an intensely fruity finish. But then, some fine tannins that are cashmere-like. A little tight at the end. From organically grown grapes. Drink after 2024.
    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
Chiara Boschis is a historic proponent of organic farming, and she lobbied to make the entire Cannubi cru a certified organic vineyard. Her 2017 Barolo Cannubi shows terrific balance and clean intensity in a vintage that presented quite a few challenges across the appellation due to the heat and drought, along with other issues such as an unexpected frost in April, but that caused the biggest damage to the lowest elevations. The Cannubi is less overtly fruity than the blended Via Nuova or the Mosconi. Instead, it has a more prominent saline imprint with mineral and crushed limestone. However, the quality of the tannins in this release is superior and silkier, and that added structure and focus give the Cannubi the longest drinking window in my opinion of these three new releases. 4,000 bottles were produced.
    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The Barolo Cannubi is absolutely gorgeous in 2017. Hot and brutally dry conditions notwithstanding, the Cannubi is creamy and sensual in the glass, with impeccable balance, soft, racy edges and tons of allure. It is easily one of the most sensual, compelling Barolos of the year. Ripe dark red/purplish fruit, spice, mint and cedar meld into the beautifully textured, resonant finish. I am so impressed with the wine’s freshness. Perhaps the anti-hail netting helped keep some shade on the fruit. What a wine.

The 2018 Sfursat 5 Stelle is compelling. Macerated dark cherry, leather, herbs and baking spices are nicely pushed forward. Impeccable in its balance and overall harmony, the 2018 looks to offer fine drinking over the near and medium term. It is another terrific wine from Negri that points to a bright future. 14. Ascheri Barolo

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#93908

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 23rd Jul 2020
The Ascheri 2016 Barolo delivers a classic interpretation of the Nebbiolo grape, albeit with a plump and fruit-forward slant. The wine opens to dried cherries and blackberries with balanced background tones of spice, tar, leather and ash. These ethereal tones add to the elegance and depth of the wine. The character of this Barolo is dark and solid, making for an ideal medium to long-term proposition. When the wine is ready to drink five years or more down the line, I’d suggest a pairing with a heavier pasta dishes or risotto with wild porcini mushrooms. The earthiness of those foods would work nicely against the savory side of this sturdy Barolo made with a blend of fruit from three comuni or villages (45% Serralunga d’Alba, 40% La Morra and 15% Verduno). Winemaking is simple, with a short fermentation time lasting about 12 days in stainless steel, followed by 22 months of aging in large Slavonian oak casks (with 70% used and 30% new oak). This was bottled in December 2019 and 22,500 bottles were filled. It hit the market in April 2020.
    WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2020
Intensely fragrant, this has enticing aromas of graphite, chopped mint, forest berry and new leather that practically leap out of the glass. Mirroring the nose, the chewy, vibrant palate delivers raspberry compote, mature black cherry, cinnamon and star anise along with an earthy hint of game. Firm tannins and fresh acidity keep balanced. Drink 2024–2036.
    VN8989 pts. - Vinous - Oct 2020
The 2016 Barolo is an attractive, delicate wine that will give readers plenty of enjoyment, especially over the next handful of years, maybe more. Sweet floral nuances lead into cedar, tobacco, licorice, anise and crushed raspberries as this lifted, translucent Barolo shows off its personality.

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#95500

    JS9797 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, July 14, 2021
This shows a lot of tar and roses with dried strawberries as well. Full-bodied with very, very fine tannins that coat your mouth, yet they are so velvety and set up the overall, focused and pure-fruit impression of the wine. Fantastic young Barolo. From organically grown grapes. Better in 2026, when the tannins will be more resolved.
    WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2021
Made with certified organic grapes, this has aromas of underbrush, ripe dark-skinned berry, eucalyptus and French oak. The full-bodied palate reflects the nose, offering dried cherry, licorice, coconut and toasted hazelnut framed in taut, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2024–2032.
    RP93+93+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 17th Jun 2021
The 2017 Barolo Monfalletto does an impressive job of showing the most detailed and elegant side of a vintage that threw quite a few curveballs at the vintners of the Langa and most of Italy because of heat and a lack of summer water reserves. This wine gently sidesteps all those difficulties to instead focus on the inner purity of the Nebbiolo grape. There is a fresh layer of wild cherry that quickly cedes to more substantial tones of earth, cedar and spice. The tannin is more present in the 2017. Monfalletto draws most of its fruit from the Gattera cru and some from Annunziata, both located in La Morra where this historic winery is located. This was an ample production of 46,000 bottles.
    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2021
The 2017 Barolo Monfalletto is a pretty, polished wine to drink now and over the next handful of years, maybe more. Alberto Cordero di Montezemolo has succeeded in crafting a Barolo that is unusually silky for the year, with little of the edginess found in so many wines. The 2017 is a bit light, but it is also impeccably balanced and a real delight. Crushed red berries, spice and gentle floral notes linger on the soft, open-knit finish.
