When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Fragrant blackberry, peach cobbler, cinnamon and orange zest show on the nose. Juicy black plum, black cherry, blueberry confiture, allspice and dried herbs skip across the palate then meld into chocolate mousse and espresso. Pair with chocolate lava cake. (Tonya Pitts)

There aren’t many Napa Valley Petite Sirahs, and this is an exceptional one. Opulent, jammy blackberry and boysenberry flavors fill this full-bodied wine to the rim, while masses of soft tannins add a velvety, rich texture. Espresso, dark chocolate and oak char nuances add a spicy side that builds on the palate and lingers on the finish. Best from 2025–2040. (Jim Gordon)
Always among my favorite wines from Girard, the 2021 Petite Sirah features its usual incredible color—impenetrable black-purple. Blueberries and baking spices appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, tannic and sturdy, with some hints of mocha on the long, dusty finish. The assemblage is 81% Petite Sirah, 17% Zinfandel and 2% Mixed Blacks, with maturation identical to the Zinfandel (14 months in barrels made of American, French and Hungarian oak, 40% new). Tasted twice, with consistent notes. (Joe Czerwinski)

The 2021 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard comes from vines planted in 1953. Opaque ruby-black in color, this has some rubbery touches on the nose that give way with time to blackcurrant, garrigue, cocoa powder, laurel leaves and charcuterie. The palate is lighter on its feet than the nose leads you to believe, with alluringly floral flavors and soft herbal undertones. It has a surprisingly refined texture, impressive freshness and a very long finish. Offer it 3–5 years in bottle. (Erin Brooks)
Broad-shouldered yet retains a sense of refinement, with brooding black cherry and red currant flavors that take on mocha, sandalwood and orange peel accents. Drink now through 2033. 600 cases made. (Tim Fish)

This wine is concentrated with aromas of blackberry, clove, toasty oak, violets and earth on the nose. The flavors on the palate are mulberry, black currant, pink grapefruit zest, dried herbs transmuting into tobacco leaf, espresso and grippy tannins. Decant for an hour and enjoy with grilled meats. Magenta-hued, this deep wine is opulent with aromas of black cherry cola, boysenberry and candied spiced pecans. The palate boasts flavors of blackberry confiture, fresh peaches, baked graham cracker crust, allspice and vanilla wafting through to the finish. Pair with braised beef cheeks. (Tonya Pitts)
